A 30 minute stop on my schedule was canceled on Friday morning, so I quickly dashed this off after being frustrated with people who, coming under the spell of YouTube promotions, were obsessed with having the \u201coldest\u201d Bible. This isn\u2019t perfect but I published on the page of our local Christian bookstore and am repeating it here for you.<\/em><\/big><\/p>\n

Lately we\u2019ve seen a significant increase in inquiries from people whose heads have been filled with misinformation about Bible translations, and who are now obsessed with having \u201cthe oldest Bible;\u201d and people who, to put it as politely as we can, don\u2019t have a clue what they are talking about. So let\u2019s review some facts about \u201coldest\u201d Bibles in chronological order.<\/big><\/p>\n

1. Original Autographs<\/strong>. This is the term for the first written manuscripts, and guess what? Nobody has a copy. I don\u2019t have a copy. You don\u2019t have a copy. That guy taking your time on social media doesn\u2019t have a copy.<\/big><\/p>\n

2. Qumran Texts<\/strong>. Keeping a chronological order going here, this appears next, but we\u2019ll get back to it.<\/big><\/p>\n

3. Oldest Available Copies<\/strong>. In this category you\u2019ll hear terms mentioned like \u201cNestle Aland\u201d or \u201cWestcott and Hort.\u201d If you\u2019ve got money to spend, the American Bible Society or Canadian Bible Society will sell you a copy. Then what? Unless you\u2019ve studied Biblical languages, you can\u2019t read it. I can\u2019t read it. The guy on social media talking on and on about it probably can\u2019t read it. (Note: Some people can. NT Wright, Scot McKnight, Eugene Peterson are recent examples.)<\/big><\/p>\n

4. English Language Editions<\/strong>. Folks, we need to be realistic here: In the grand scheme of things, English as we know it is a rather recent development on the world stage. So we\u2019re talking Wycliffe (1382), Tyndale (1525), Coverdale (1535), Matthew\u2019s Bible (1537), King Henry Version aka Great Bible (1539), Geneva (1560), King James (1611; version we have is 1789).<\/big><\/p>\n

5. Robert Estienne Version<\/strong> (1551). Never heard of it? You use it every day. Sort of. Though it\u2019s technically not English, he is the one who created verse numbers, a feature most agree was not in our best interests. He gave numbers to verses we now know were scribal additions, or run on sentences. Correcting this means your Bible may appear to have gaps (usually filled in at a bottom-of-page footnote to keep the peace) and leads to rumors that modern translators *removed* verses.<\/big><\/p>\n

6. Immediate forerunners<\/strong> to many of today\u2019s popular versions. We\u2019re talking American Standard Version. Revised Standard Version. We can safely put the 1789 King James in this category.<\/big><\/p>\n

7. Dead Sea Scrolls<\/strong> discovery 1947-1956. See item 2 above. Yes, the Qumran cave scrolls are finally found, while Bedouin shepherds watched their flocks by night. (Couldn\u2019t resist that one; it was probably daytime.) Some pieces are just fragments, but for Bible academics and archeologists alike it\u2019s like winning the lottery.<\/big><\/p>\n

8. Post-Dead Sea Scrolls updates,<\/strong> revisions, and new translations. Now we\u2019ve fast-forwarded to 2026: NLT, NIV, NASB, etc. The Bibles English-speakers have loved for 750 years but with the knowledge and scholarship we now have, information based on the oldest available manuscripts. The best of all available knowledge.<\/big><\/p>\n

Now read number 8 again. Do you get it?
The newest<\/em> is the\u00a0oldest.<\/em><\/big><\/p>\n

Or to put it another way, the current translations we use have more in common with the original autographs than anything Christians have had access to for centuries, if not millennia.<\/big><\/p>\n

Want to get close to the oldest Bible? Buy a current translation. That\u2019s not publishing industry bias, that\u2019s just something I\u2019ve come to appreciate more recently as we speak with people loaded with false information or presumed conspiracies.<\/big><\/p>\n

And remember Augustine\u2019s words, quoted in an early KJV edition, that there is wisdom to be gained by using multiple translations.<\/big><\/p>\n
