They also came across basins where artisans would have mixed pigments with water.<\/p>\n<p>But the highlight of the haul is a solid hunk of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/glistening-egyptian-blue-pigment-was-forgotten-then-lost-180956451\/\">Egyptian blue<\/a>, a rare pigment prized for thousands of years for its shimmering and ethereal qualities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image right\">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/AW4Qb4K-CaYz_qYckh6ZHaMhm5U=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(724x1027:725x1028)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/40\/2f\/402f54a5-9707-4a45-960a-3edf1c7dfe80\/yellow1.jpg\" alt=\"Yellow\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Yellow ocher discovered inside a Roman amphora<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Simona Murrone \/ Colosseum Archaeological Park<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe fascination conveyed by the depth of blue of this pigment is incredible,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/independent.academia.edu\/russoalfonsina\">Alfonsina Russo<\/a>, the director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, which manages the Domus Aurea, in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/parcocolosseo\/posts\/pfbid02eYGrMX46FzfZRh2D36YU7GeCsvK5zNZsfb9wRgtuZtYWkfyePLw2G4fxZeEkdAKil\">statement<\/a>, per a translation by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/archaeologists-uncover-unusually-large-chunk-of-rare-egyptian-blue-in-neros-palace-2000554339\"><em>Gizmodo<\/em><\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/author\/margherita-bassi\/\">Margherita Bassi<\/a>. \u201cThe Domus Aurea once again moves [us] and restores the brilliance of the colors used by the painters who skillfully decorated the rooms of this precious and refined imperial palace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike ocher and realgar, which occur naturally, Egyptian blue is a synthetic pigment\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S030544032300050X#\">produced<\/a> by firing a mixture of silica, limestone and minerals containing copper and sodium carbonate at high temperatures. It is considered the world\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu\/ancient-color\/blue.php\">oldest<\/a> known synthetic pigment.<\/p>\n<p>As its name suggests, the blue pigment originated in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/see-the-haunting-stone-face-of-a-ptolemaic-statue-unearthed-near-the-ancient-egyptian-city-of-alexandria-180985894\/\">ancient Egypt<\/a>. Dating to at least the third millennium B.C.E., it became an \u201cessential element\u201d in decoration and design, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.labrujulaverde.com\/en\/2025\/01\/exceptional-discovery-in-neros-domus-aurea-in-rome-pigments-and-a-massive-ingot-of-egyptian-blue\/\"><em>La Br\u00fajula Verde<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Guillermo Carvajal. It provided the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/egyptian-blue-roman-mummy-portraits-328588\">subtle shading<\/a> on ancient Egyptian portraits and the vivid coloring of faience funerary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artic.edu\/artworks\/136314\/shabti-of-pinudjem-ii\">figurines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Roman architect\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Vitruvius\">Vitruvius<\/a> recorded the recipe in his treatise <em>De Architectura <\/em>in the first century B.C.E., reflecting how the color spread through the Mediterranean world and found a thriving home in the Roman Empire, where researchers have since identified Egyptian blue in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemistryworld.com\/features\/egyptian-blue-more-than-just-a-colour\/9001.article\">Baths of Titus<\/a> and the walls of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/rare-blue-shrine-unearthed-at-pompeii-180984507\/\">Pompeii<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/quPQhJ8vNEncD2v5IzZ1nHCZj0c=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(1024x731:1025x732)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/82\/75\/82754a58-476e-4591-9a93-4084ee0bba43\/blue2.jpg\" alt=\"Blue2\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Egyptian blue is the world&#8217;s oldest known synthetic pigment.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Simona Murrone \/ Colosseum Archaeological Park<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Often, archaeologists discover traces of Egyptian blue that are all but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/researchers-have-found-hidden-details-in-ancient-egyptian-paintings-using-portable-chemical-imaging-technology-2338409\">imperceptible<\/a> to the human eye. For instance, with the help of microscopes and luminescent imaging, researchers at the British Museum discovered that Egyptian blue once adorned the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/new-research-reveals-the-vibrant-paint-that-once-decorated-the-parthenon-marbles-180983058\/\">Parthenon marbles<\/a>. In other cases, the pigment has been found in fine powders or small spheres, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>But what makes this discovery at the Domus Aurea all the more remarkable is the whopping size of the Egyptian blue ingot in question, which weighs more than five pounds and measures six inches long.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/P_n5G2s3DQQbq9E7PBbi64MlhKk=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(1024x731:1025x732)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/00\/81\/008165e1-8d48-46c3-9ba5-6e209daa881e\/tanks2.jpg\" alt=\"Tanks\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Basins where the pigments were hydrated and mixed with water<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Simona Murrone \/ Colosseum Archaeological Park<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The great size of this sample suggests widespread usage in the palace\u2019s frescoes, as well as the \u201cspecialized skills of the masters working on the imperial project,\u201d as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/domus-aurea-nero-egyptian-blue-2604024\"><em>Artnet<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Min Chen writes.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists are investigating whether this sample of Egyptian blue was produced domestically\u2014in a place like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/italy\/campi-flegrei\/attractions\/parco-archeologico-di-cuma\/a\/poi-sig\/1138769\/1316221\">Cuma<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/ruins-of-liternum\">Liternum<\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Pozzuoli\">Pozzuoli<\/a>, which Vitruvius noted as a production hub\u2014or exported from an Egyptian city like Alexandria, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers once thought that the pigment&#8217;s recipe was lost after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/fall-roman-republic-income-inequality-and-xenophobia-threatened-its-foundations-180967249\/\">fall<\/a> of the Roman Empire, only to be rediscovered in the 19th century by the British chemist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Sir-Humphry-Davy-Baronet\">Humphry Davy<\/a>.
