During his 25-year career as an animator and filmmaker, Ushev has won dozens of accolades and awards across the globe.<\/h2>\n<p>To commemorate International Animation Day 2023, this instalment of <em>Curator\u2019s Perspective<\/em> will\u00a0shine a spotlight on Ushev\u2019s impressive body of work at the NFB. To begin, I invite you to watch Borislav Kolev\u2019s remarkable documentary <strong><em>Theodore Ushev: Unseen Connections<\/em><\/strong> (2022), released online today at nfb.ca. Kolev generously walks viewers through the places and people that intentionally\u2014or tangentially\u2014shaped Ushev\u2019s creative world; luckily for us, this entails a journey through Bulgarian arts, history, culture and even counterculture.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/theodore-ushev-unseen-connections\/embed\/player\/\" width=\"530\" height=\"345\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"width:(( width ))px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/theodore-ushev-unseen-connections\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Theodore Ushev: Unseen Connections<\/em><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/borislav-kolev\/\" title=\"more films by Borislav Kolev\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Borislav Kolev<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\" target=\"_blank\">provided by the National Film Board of Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Birth of a Great Filmmaker: 1999\u20132009<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/theodore-ushev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ushev<\/a> worked as an acclaimed poster artist in Bulgaria before moving to Montreal in 1999, and prior to his NFB collaborations Ushev directed dozens of shorts for the web, exploring a variety of styles in films like <em>Aurora<\/em> (1999), <em>Dissociation<\/em> (2001) and <em>Early in Fall, Late in Winter<\/em> (2002). His first NFB film was <strong><em>Vertical<\/em><\/strong>, released in 2003 and streaming as of now on nfb.ca. This darkly humorous take on the absurdity of a world sliding towards its doom is also a superb allegory that recalls the ancient myth of Sisyphus.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/vertical_en\/embed\/player\/\" width=\"530\" height=\"345\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"width:(( width ))px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/vertical_en\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Vertical<\/em><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/theodore-ushev\/\" title=\"more films by Theodore Ushev\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Theodore Ushev<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\" target=\"_blank\">provided by the National Film Board of Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Between 2003 and 2008, Ushev made four NFB films\u2014<strong><em>Vertical<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Tower Bawher<\/em><\/strong> (2005), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/tzaritza_en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Tzaritza<\/em><\/strong> (2006)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/drux_flux_\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Drux Flux<\/em><\/strong> (2008)<\/a>\u2014garnering 12 awards, mainly at European and North American festivals. All of these shorts are beautiful and extremely interesting to watch, but I particularly like <strong><em>Tower Bawher<\/em><\/strong>, as it pays homage to Soviet constructivist art, an aesthetic movement that emerged in 1917. In this film, Ushev references various Soviet artists whose work was a key element of the cultural landscape in countries that were part of the Soviet Union at the time, including his native Bulgaria. Georgy Sviridov\u2019s music score also makes this a must-watch film.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/tower_bawher\/embed\/player\/\" width=\"530\" height=\"345\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"width:(( width ))px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/tower_bawher\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Tower Bawher <\/em><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/theodore-ushev\/\" title=\"more films by Theodore Ushev\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Theodore Ushev<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\" target=\"_blank\">provided by the National Film Board of Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Auteur Emerges: 2010\u20132017<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The 2010s were defining years in Ushev\u2019s career. The filmmaker not only made seven films in seven years (an astonishing pace for any artist), but throughout this time his works were screened and praised at some of the world\u2019s most prestigious festivals and events. The beginning of this fruitful decade saw the release of <strong><em>Lipsett Diaries<\/em><\/strong> (2010), an exploration of the life of Arthur Lipsett, the director behind iconic NFB titles like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/very_nice_very_nice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Very Nice, Very Nice<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (1961), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/21-87\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>21-87<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (1963) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/trip_down_memory_lane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>A Trip Down Memory<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (1965). Ushev uses excerpts from Arthur Lipsett\u2019s films to illustrate the anguish that tormented the Montreal-born filmmaker up until his early death at the age of 49. <strong><em>Lipsett Diaries<\/em><\/strong> received no less than 15 awards and honours.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/lipsett_diaries\/embed\/player\/\" width=\"530\" height=\"345\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"width:(( width ))px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/lipsett_diaries\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Lipsett Diaries<\/em><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/theodore-ushev\/\" title=\"more films by Theodore Ushev\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Theodore Ushev<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\" target=\"_blank\">provided by the National Film Board of Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apart from <strong><em>Lipsett Diaries<\/em><\/strong>, during this decade Ushev also directed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/yannick_nezet-seguin_no_intermission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin: No Intermission<\/em><\/strong> (2010)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/gloria_victoria_fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Gloria Victoria<\/em><\/strong> (2012)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/third_page_from_the_sun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Third Page from the Sun<\/em><\/strong> (2014)<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/blood_manifesto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em> Blood Manifesto<\/em><\/strong> (2014)<\/a>, <strong><em>Blind Vaysha<\/em><\/strong> (2016) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/naked_island_blood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Naked Island \u2013 Blood<\/em><\/strong> (2017)<\/a>. All films whose form and content are compelling\u2014especially <strong><em>Blind Vaysha<\/em><\/strong>, which earned Ushev an Oscar nomination: \u201ca film adapted from the philosophical short story by Georgi Gospodinov, that uses an expressive and powerful style poised halfway between religious paintings and linocuts\u2026 It is a captivating metaphoric tale about the difficulty of being in the here and now. With timeless beauty and wisdom, it reminds us of the importance of living in the present moment.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/blind_vaysha\/embed\/player\/\" width=\"530\" height=\"345\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"width:(( width ))px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/blind_vaysha\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Blind Vaysha<\/em><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/theodore-ushev\/\" title=\"more films by Theodore Ushev\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Theodore Ushev<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\" target=\"_blank\">provided by the National Film Board of Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Theodore Ushev and International Animation Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Over the last five years, Ushev has made two non-NFB titles\u2014<em>Barcelona Burning<\/em> (2019) and <em>Phi 1.618<\/em> (2022)\u2014and one NFB film: <strong><em>The Physics of Sorrow <\/em><\/strong>(2019), \u201cwhich tracks an unknown man\u2019s life as he sifts through memories of his youth in Bulgaria through to his increasingly rootless and melancholic adulthood in Canada.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a> What I found most striking about this film is that after 25 years of filmmaking, Ushev still creates with so much passion, using a powerful blend of techniques to craft this dystopian short. He has the energy of an auteur who\u2019s constantly rediscovering his art form and striving to leave his mark. <strong><em>The Physics of Sorrow<\/em><\/strong> earned more than 40 awards, proving how universal this personal story is\u2014and I, personally, was touched on many levels by this fantastic film.
