{"id":68320,"date":"2025-02-04T19:30:19","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T19:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/internet-business\/tech-giants-have-faced-criticism-from-some-for-so-called-killer-acquisitions-online-planet-apps\/"},"modified":"2025-02-04T19:30:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-04T19:30:19","slug":"tech-giants-have-faced-criticism-from-some-for-so-called-killer-acquisitions-online-planet-apps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=68320","title":{"rendered":"Tech giants have faced criticism from some for so-called \u201ckiller acquisitions\u201d \u2013 Online Planet Apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Draft rules targeted at Alphabet Inc\u2019s Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple should be beefed up to allow regulators to vet their acquisitions of start-up rivals, Germany, France, and the Netherlands said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The joint statement by German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier, his French counterpart Bruno Le Maire, French Junior Minister C\u00e9dric O, and Dutch Economic Affairs Minister Mona Keijzer came as EU countries and lawmakers prepared to debate the European Commission\u2019s proposed rules.<\/p>\n<p>Tech giants have faced criticism from some for so-called \u201ckiller acquisitions\u201d where they buy nascent rivals with the goal of shutting them down.<\/p>\n<p>Regulators should use the proposed Digital Markets Act (DMA) to address this issue, the ministers said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, setting clear and legally certain thresholds for acquisitions by gatekeepers of targets with relatively low turnover, but high value,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond, adapting the substantive test to effectively address cases of potentially predatory acquisitions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They said the proposed rules should allow leeway for EU countries to tackle so-called online gatekeepers and anti-competitive behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>The draft rules could come into force next year once the EU Commission, member states and lawmakers have thrashed out a common position.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Digital Markets Act?<\/h2>\n<p>The DMA is a piece of legislation currently under consideration by the European Parliament and EU member states.<\/p>\n<p>The EU says the Act will target internet \u201cgatekeepers\u201d \u2013 meaning Big Tech companies \u2013 which benefit from a dominant position over the digital market.<\/p>\n<p>If adopted, the DMA would:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Block gatekeepers from favouring their own products over a competitor\u2019s, for example by placing them more prominently in search results on a website they own.<\/li>\n<li>Enable consumers to uninstall any pre-installed apps or software on devices they purchase.<\/li>\n<li>Oblige gatekeepers to improve the transparency of advertising hosted on their platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reference : https:\/\/bit.ly\/3gSHLKz<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Draft rules targeted at Alphabet Inc\u2019s Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple should be beefed up to allow regulators to vet their acquisitions of start-up rivals, Germany, France, and the Netherlands said on Thursday.
