The discovery is offering a new perspective on the long human history of the region, as well as how to preserve and protect its legacy for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>Cache pits are like root cellars, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/liz-ortiz-579169140\/\">Elizabeth Ortiz<\/a>, an archaeologist and cultural resource manager at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jber.jb.mil\/\">Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson<\/a> (JBER), the military complex where the discovery was made, says in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jber.jb.mil\/News\/Articles\/Display\/Article\/3988102\/jber-yields-rare-dene-cache\/#:~:text=rare%20Dene%20cache-,Archaeologists%20from%20Joint%20Base%20Elmendorf%2DRichardson%2C%20Northern%20Land%20Use%20Research,Inlet%20in%20June%20of%202024\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Located along a well-known Dene trail that led north out of the modern-day Anchorage area, the pit measures about 3.5 feet deep. It was dug into well-drained soil and lined with birch bark and grass, which preserved fish, meat and berries through the harsh seasonal extremes of southeastern Alaska.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/aVeuMdzE56Vs1NgAkXuSq55cDuY=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(2592x1950:2593x1951)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/28\/dc\/28dcf5a6-a138-49c8-8769-08e2083eb2be\/pit_measure.jpeg\" alt=\"Pit2\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      The cache pit is nearly 1,000 years old, making it a rare find in the highly developed region surrounding Anchorage.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Dene, also known as Athabaskans, include the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anchorage.net\/plan-your-trip\/about-anchorage\/the-denaina-people\/\">Dena\u2019ina<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahtna.com\/about\/history-and-culture\/\">Ahtna<\/a> people. In the summers, they would have stayed in the area to catch and preserve salmon and terrestrial meat, with houses and smokehouses lining the bluffs above the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Cook-Inlet\">Cook Inlet<\/a>, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arkeonews.net\/anchorages-indigenous-history-a-1000-year-old-dene-cache-found-near-cook-inlet\/#google_vignette\"><em>Arkeonews<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists expected the cache pit to be a few hundred years old. However, radiocarbon testing revealed that it was actually much older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we got the results back that said it was 960 years, plus or minus 30, we were shocked,\u201d Ortiz tells Alena Naiden of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knba.org\/news\/2025-01-22\/an-ancient-dene-cache-discovered-at-jber-highlights-anchorages-indigenous-history\">KNBA<\/a>, a local radio station. \u201c[We] were jumping up and down in our cube in tears. It was very, very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new analysis \u201cfurther substantiates Dena\u2019ina and Ahtna oral traditions that JBER and the surrounding area have been used for a very long time,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/margan-grover-a5a93012\/\">Margan Grover<\/a>, an archaeologist with JBER, says in the statement.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/2OQ69KZ2CCOnAv67Aqr7Vwl9BSA=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(1024x683:1025x684)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/49\/93\/499309c1-bb0e-4f25-8aae-1cc3ab80de38\/a_moose_near_the_steese_highway_in_alaska.jpg\" alt=\"Moose\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Initial tests show that moose and caribou were stored in the cache pit.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:A_moose_near_the_Steese_Highway_in_Alaska.jpg#\/media\/File:A_moose_near_the_Steese_Highway_in_Alaska.jpg\" target=\"blank\">Public domain via Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The team conducted additional radiocarbon and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crowcanyon.org\/stable-isotope-analysis\/\">stable isotope tests<\/a> to determine whether the food buried in the cache pit was from the land or the sea. Initial findings suggest the presence of moose or caribou, though researchers plan to test the surrounding soil to confirm whether such animals were stored in the cache or were just passing by.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally, archaeologists find comparable cache pits in areas like Alaska\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaska.org\/destination\/mat-su-valley\">Matanuska-Susitna Valley<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adfg.alaska.gov\/index.cfm?adfg=viewinglocations.kenai\">Kenai Peninsula<\/a>. Other Alaskan archaeological sites like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/detail\/r10\/learning\/history-culture\/?cid=fseprd504069#:~:text=Not%20only%20is%20Swan%20Point,been%20a%20mammoth%20ivory%20workshop.\">Swan Point<\/a>, which contains evidence of humans hunting mammoths, can date back as many as 14,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, most of the area surrounding the cache had been razed by the military in the 1940s, when JBER was under construction. To find such an old and well-preserved site in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.muni.org\/departments\/operations\/streets\/documents\/ardsa_map.pdf\">Anchorage Bowl<\/a>, as the developed region surrounding Alaska\u2019s largest city is known, is much rarer and holds \u201cextra significance\u201d to the region\u2019s Indigenous groups, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know we can\u2019t stop development,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eklutna-nsn.gov\/about\/tribal-government\/#:~:text=Aaron%20Leggett%20was%20elected%20President%20of%20Native%20Village%20of%20Eklutna%20on%20Saturday%2C%20January%2027%2C%202018%2C%20by%20an%20unprecedented%20write%2Din%20vote%20with%20a%2041%25%20quorum%20established.%20He%20was%20nominated%20from%20the%20floor%20at%20the%20meeting%20to%20be%20President.\">Aaron Leggett<\/a>, president of the Native Village of Eklutna and a curator at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anchoragemuseum.org\/\">Anchorage Museum<\/a>, tells KNBA. \u201cBut can we use these opportunities to fill in the picture?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/fWqJJe6WIJB_9kP26rYFiANsW8M=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(2592x1950:2593x1951)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/cb\/61\/cb61d844-4753-4eeb-bd6a-2b06ded2300f\/cache_soil.jpeg\" alt=\"Pit3\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Cache pits were used like root cellars to preserve and store fish, meat and berries.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the statement, Leggett expresses his hope that the tribal governments and the U.S. government will use the cache site as motivation to work toward their \u201cshared goals and the co-production of knowledge about our past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, half of Alaska\u2019s population lives within traditional Dene lands, according to KNBA.
