After years of studying psychology and counseling, I made the decision to build my career in our great state. It\u2019s here, among my patients, that I\u2019ve seen firsthand the profound challenges many women face after childbirth\u2014challenges that Alabama has the power to address. One of the most urgent is postpartum depression (PPD).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Alabama, <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/637b72cb2e3c555fa412eaf0\/t\/63dd214e4143f055d334e0ea\/1675436366855\/Alabama.pdf\"><span class=\"s2\">20 percent of new mothers experience PPD<\/span><\/a>, a rate significantly higher than the national average.\u00a0PPD affects more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK519070\/\"><span class=\"s2\">mothers<\/span><\/a> here in Alabama than in almost any other state. These moms aren\u2019t just struggling with the \u201cbaby blues.\u201d PPD is a serious mental health condition that can last for months at a time, resulting in severe symptoms with negative impacts on the quality of life of both the mother and child. Depressed mood, loss of appetite, feelings of hopelessness, thoughts of harming the baby, and recurring thoughts of suicide make PPD a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4842365\/\"><span class=\"s2\">potentially deadly illness<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If left untreated, the wellbeing of the mother and baby is jeopardized. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4842365\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Experts<\/span><\/a> note that \u201cnegative long-term consequences to the infant\u2019s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development have been reported.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/policycentermmh.org\/universal-screening-for-maternal-mental-health-disorders-issue-brief\/\">The Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> has described PPD as a condition with \u201cdevastating consequences\u201d for families if left untreated. And the severity of these symptoms underscores the urgency for new mothers to receive swift and effective treatment as soon as symptoms appear. Delays in treatment could result in disastrous <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6492376\/\"><span class=\"s2\">consequences<\/span><\/a> for either the newborn\u2019s development or the mother\u2019s mental state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The stakes are high. Babies of mothers with untreated PPD are at <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4842365\/#B20\"><span class=\"s2\">greater risk<\/span><\/a> for developmental delays, behavioral issues, and poor emotional attachment. Families often bear the brunt of emotional and financial strain, and our communities feel the ripple effects. PPD costs Alabama hundreds of millions of dollars annually in lost productivity and healthcare expenses, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/637b72cb2e3c555fa412eaf0\/t\/63dd214e4143f055d334e0ea\/1675436366855\/Alabama.pdf\"><span class=\"s2\">Maternal Mental Health Alliance<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> This is a crisis that affects us all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alabama has already taken a step in the right direction by extending Medicaid postpartum coverage from <a href=\"https:\/\/medicaid.alabama.gov\/alert_detail.aspx?ID=16089#:~:text=The%20Alabama%20Medicaid%20Agency%20received,the%20births%20in%20the%20state.\"><span class=\"s2\">60 days to 12 months<\/span><\/a>. This policy change ensures more mothers can access care during the critical first year after childbirth. But there\u2019s still more we must do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Universal PPD screening during pregnancy and postpartum visits is a vital next step. Early detection saves lives and prevents long-term harm to mothers and their babies. These solutions aren\u2019t just good policy; they reflect our shared commitment to supporting families and building a stronger Alabama.\u00a0For mothers on Medicaid, this support would be particularly impactful, as they are more likely to suffer from PPD <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9958523\/\"><span class=\"s2\">compared<\/span><\/a> to their counterparts on commercial insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. When mothers receive the care they need, they can bond with their babies, return to work, and fully engage in their families and communities. When mothers thrive, so do we all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As the 2025 legislative session approaches, I urge Alabama\u2019s lawmakers to prioritize maternal mental health. By building on the progress we\u2019ve made and enacting policies to extend care, ensure screenings and improve access to groundbreaking treatment, we can lead the way in recognizing the vital role of mothers in our state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is our moment to act. Let\u2019s come together as Alabamians to ensure no mother faces this journey alone.
