This SEM SOUNDING BOARD aims at operating in the interstices between sound-as-episteme and sound-as-performance, sound-as-symbol and sound-as-affect, sound-as-ethnography and sound-as-art.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit is an opportunity for sound-minded scholars to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>explore<\/em>\u00a0other avenues to circulate advanced or incipient research projects<\/li>\n<li><em>deploy\u00a0<\/em>the sound installation as an acoustemological tool to understand unattended research horizons<\/li>\n<li><em>reflect<\/em>\u00a0on ethnography as a process, for instance by making use of audiovisual material collected during fieldwork<\/li>\n<li><em>collaborate<\/em>\u00a0with other sound-minded people, such as ethnographic collaborators and scholars working on similar topics or places<\/li>\n<li><em>stimulate\u00a0<\/em>dialogue between ethnomusicology and other academic fields such as sound studies, sound art, ecomusicology, anthropology, and media studies<\/li>\n<li><em>establish\u00a0<\/em>a point of contact between SEM and the local community during the annual meeting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first edition of SEM SOUNDING BOARD displays nine sound works that probe into\u00a0<u>sonic in-placements<\/u>\u00a0(water and wind),\u00a0<u>sonic displacements<\/u>\u00a0(the telephone, the radio, and the microphone),\u00a0<u>sonic emplacements<\/u>\u00a0(the acoustic territories of urban Taiwan, the Brazilian hinterlands, and West Texas), and\u00a0<u>sonic mix-placements<\/u>\u00a0(in Mexico City and Havana).<\/p>\n<p>This is a grassroots initiative built on the genuine interest and voluntary work of scholars and the local community.
