{"id":62655,"date":"2025-02-01T18:10:02","date_gmt":"2025-02-01T18:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/gtmtips-preview-requests-in-server-side-google-tag-manager\/"},"modified":"2025-02-01T18:10:02","modified_gmt":"2025-02-01T18:10:02","slug":"gtmtips-preview-requests-in-server-side-google-tag-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=62655","title":{"rendered":"#GTMTips: Preview Requests In Server-side Google Tag Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/\">Server-side Google Tag Manager<\/a> has an <em>excellent<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-platform\/tag-manager\/server-side\/debug\">Preview mode<\/a>, which lets you <strong>inspect incoming requests<\/strong>, <strong>monitor the event data object<\/strong>, <strong>view console messages<\/strong>, and <strong>identify outgoing requests<\/strong>, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>To enable this Preview mode on the web, you simply need to click the <strong>Preview<\/strong> button in the container, after which any requests sent from the <strong>same browser instance<\/strong> will be automatically shown in the Preview mode window.<\/p>\n<p>However, what about if you want to send requests from another browser? Or from a non-browser data source? If the request to the server includes these cookies, then the request will show up in Preview mode.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1772 \/ 148;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2022\/06\/preview-cookies.jpg\" title=\"Cookies for preview mode\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"148\" width=\"1772\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2022\/06\/preview-cookies.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Cookies for preview mode\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, there are many cases where you either can\u2019t include these cookies or your browser doesn\u2019t support the necessary mechanisms (e.g. third-party cookies) for this dispatch method, or you want to use a different browser (instance) where those cookies are not included.<\/p>\n<p>For this case, there\u2019s a special option in the Preview mode action menu, called <strong>Send requests manually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 966 \/ 322;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2022\/06\/enable-preview.jpg\" title=\"Enable preview mode\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"322\" width=\"966\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2022\/06\/enable-preview.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Enable preview mode\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>When you click this, you\u2019ll see an overlay similar to the one in the main image of this article. This overlay instructs you to add a certain <strong>HTTP header<\/strong> to those requests that you want to show up in the server-side GTM\u2019s Preview mode.<\/p>\n<p>The overlay even gives you a <a href=\"https:\/\/curl.se\/\">curl<\/a> command that you can run in your machine\u2019s terminal (assuming <code>curl<\/code> has been installed). As long as you are sending hits to a Preview tab open in the browser, the value will be the same across any other tab you might open to Preview mode. But if you change the browser instance where the Preview mode is (by sharing the Preview mode, for example), the value of the header will change.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, if you <strong>delete the Preview cookies<\/strong> or preview another workspace, the value will change again.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it\u2019s not something you could bake into your app \u2013\u00a0you would need to update the value whenever the header value changes in the Preview window itself.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this tip helps you when setting up your server-side Google Tag Manager workflows.
