The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is still grappling with the aftermath of a cyberattack that occurred last Sunday evening. The attack has significantly affected the organization\u2019s information and communication technology (ICT) systems, causing disruptions to critical weather data gathering and dissemination. Oupa Segalwe, senior manager for communication and stakeholder relations at SAWS, confirmed that the hackers have demanded a ransom, although they have not specified an amount.<\/p>\n

This follows a failed attempt by the hackers to breach<\/a> the systems the day before. The cyberattack has forced SAWS to resort to alternative methods of gathering and sharing weather data pending the restoration of its ICT<\/a> systems. A team of engineers and cybersecurity<\/a> experts is working tirelessly to restore normal functionality within a reasonable timeframe.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges<\/a>, SAWS has restored email functionality and its telephone system \u2014 but this also affects the forecasting systems that the airlines rely on.<\/p>\n

Saws mitigates cyberattack impact<\/h2>\n

The organization sends weather information to the public via email to media houses and disaster management authorities while sharing forecasts on social media<\/a> platforms as its website remains down.<\/p>\n

The cybersecurity breach<\/a> has also affected aspects of aviation and marine services, making it impossible for SAWS to use its usual seamless system. However, the organization is using alternative methods and channels to avoid any interruption of these critical services<\/a>. SAWS understands the importance of its services in saving lives and property from the impact of hazardous weather and is not taking the cyberattack lightly.<\/p>\n

The organization is committed to resolving the issue as quickly as possible to minimize the disruption to its services. As the investigation into the cyberattack continues, SAWS will provide further updates on the situation.
