Shreveport Aquarium experts take care of the new swell shark pup.

On January 3, the Shreveport Aquarium in Louisiana welcomed a swell shark pup into the world under mysterious circumstances: It was born in a tank that housed only two sharks\u2014and both were female.<\/p>\n

The two swell sharks<\/a> have been in a female-only habitat at the Shreveport Aquarium for more than three years. So, how did this birth happen?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis situation is incredible and shows the resilience of this species,\u201d Greg Barrick, the aquarium\u2019s curator of live animals, says in a statement<\/a>. \u201cIt really proves that life… uh… finds a way,\u201d he adds, referencing Jurassic Park<\/em>\u2019s surprisingly similar situation<\/a> with female dinosaurs.<\/p>\n

Aquarists have two potential explanations for what process created this shark. One of the two adult females might have carried out a rare form of asexual reproduction called parthenogenesis<\/a>, or it could be a case of delayed fertilization. The team will be able to tell which one it was\u2014and who the mother is\u2014with a DNA analysis, but they have to wait a few months before they can draw blood from the baby.<\/p>\n
