The pair found a few more loose coins\u2014including the largest Roman coin ever found in the province\u2014but their metal detectors would not stop beeping. Messelaar finally stuck his hand into a shallow hole in the ground, where he uncovered a stash of hundreds of coins. \u201cBingo,\u201d he recalls thinking, according to<em> <\/em>RTV Utrecht.<\/p>\n<p>Koelink and Messelaar used clumps of mud to keep the coins together before bringing the haul back home, where they carefully cleaned, sorted and reported their findings to cultural heritage authorities. Then, they celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe opened a bottle of champagne,\u201d Messelaar tells the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2025\/jan\/27\/hoard-of-coins-dating-from-roman-conquest-of-britain-found-near-utrecht\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Daniel Boffey. \u201cYou never find this.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/xlVQkV5npVgdE3BnkEq18qU2mlk=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(384x260:385x261)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/63\/6d\/636dbb9d-1c6c-496d-a2f8-8650c428d11f\/zilveren_munten_800p-768x513.jpg\" alt=\"silver coins\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Silver Roman\u00a0<em>denarii<\/em><\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">National Museum of Antiquities<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following the detectorists\u2019 initial discovery of 381 coins in the summer of 2023, the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cultureelerfgoed.nl\/\">Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency<\/a>, with the help of Koelink and Messelaar, conducted additional excavations in the surrounding areas, finding another 23 coins.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the grand total of 404 coins will now join a permanent exhibition titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmo.nl\/en\/exhibitions\/permanent-exhibitions\/netherlands-in-roman-times\/\">The Netherlands in Roman Times<\/a>\u201d at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmo.nl\/en\/\">National Museum of Antiquities<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/travel\/the-pilgrims-before-plymouth-111851259\/\">Leiden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dated to between 200 B.C.E. and 47 C.E., 360 of the coins are Roman in origin. One depicts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/travel\/explore-julius-caesars-rome-180950262\/\">Julius Caesar<\/a>, while another even rarer coin shows the likeness of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Juba-I\">Juba<\/a>, the ruler of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Numidia\">Numidia<\/a>, a kingdom in northern Africa that roughly corresponds to modern-day Algeria.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the Claudius coins dated to between 46 and 47 C.E. are from identical dies, suggesting they were distributed to Roman soldiers as military pay, write <a href=\"https:\/\/independent.academia.edu\/AntonCruysheer\">Anton Cruysheer<\/a>, an archaeologist with the Utrecht Landscape and Heritage Foundation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cultureelerfgoed.academia.edu\/TessadeGroot\">Tessa de Groot<\/a>, an archaeologist with the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utrechtaltijd.nl\/verhalen\/the-bunnik-hoard-2023\/\"><em>UtrechtAltijd<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 44 non-Roman coins are perhaps the most notable of the entire stash. The golden alloy coins, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/247144\">staters<\/a>, bear the inscription \u201cCVNO,\u201d the first four letters of Cunobelinus, the Latin name of Celtic King <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Cunobelinus\">Cunobelin<\/a>, who reigned between roughly 10 and 42 C.E. in southeastern Britain.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>Grote muntvondst uit Romeinse tijd<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/KxygXCch2cc\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"KxygXCch2cc\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Cruysheer and de Groot argue that the eclectic composition of the hoard \u201cstrongly suggests a connection to the conquest of Britain\u201d under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoveryuk.com\/monarchs-and-rulers\/aulus-plautius-the-roman-general-who-conquered-britain\/\">Aulus Plautius<\/a>, a Roman general who Claudius dispatched to cross the Channel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Aulus-Plautius\">invade<\/a> the island in 43 C.E.<\/p>\n<p>The wide range of dates of the Cunobelin staters, including four posthumously issued coins, indicates that the stash was removed from circulation in one fell swoop, like Roman troops looting the newly conquered territory, according to <em>UtrechtAltijd<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Combined with the Roman coins used as military pay, the entire stash strongly resembles spoils of war. Discovered less than a foot beneath the surface, where it was probably buried in a leather pouch that has since decayed, the cache was left in a region where Roman troops were known to have amassed before the invasion of Britain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time that physical evidence of the return of the troops has been found,\u201d Cruysheer tells <em>t<\/em><em>he Guardian<\/em>. \u201cApparently, they came back with all sorts of things.
