This medication, produced by <strong>Vertex Pharmaceuticals<\/strong> <strong>Inc<\/strong> <span class=\"ticker\" data-ticker=\"VRTX\" data-exchange=\"NASDAQ\" style=\"display: inline-block;\">VRTX<\/span>, is a non-opioid and therefore non-addictive.\u00a0The new drug, suzetrigine, will be sold under the brand name <strong>Journavx<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike opioids, Journavx blocks pain signals in the peripheral nervous system, not in the brain, so it does not create the same pleasurable effects usually felt with opioids and which often leads to dependence or addiction.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A new non-opioid analgesic therapeutic class for acute pain offers an opportunity to mitigate certain risks associated with using an opioid for pain and provides patients with another treatment option,&#8221; Dr. <strong>Jacqueline Corrigan-Curay<\/strong>, acting director of the FDA&#8217;s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-novel-non-opioid-treatment-moderate-severe-acute-pain\">said<\/a> in a press release. &#8220;This action and the agency&#8217;s designations to expedite the drug&#8217;s development and review underscore FDA&#8217;s commitment to approving safe and effective alternatives to opioids for pain management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now Read: <a href=\"http:\/\/Purdue Pharma, Sackler Family To Pay $7.4 Billion In Settlement Over OxyContin That Fueled 'Devastating' Opioid Epidemic\">Purdue Pharma, Sackler Family To Pay $7.4 Billion In Settlement Over OxyContin That Fueled \u2018Devastating\u2019 Opioid Epidemic<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Government surveys show analgesics, or medications that control pain, are the most commonly prescribed type of drug in hospitals. And, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db491.htm\">according<\/a> to the Centers for Disease Control drug overdoses related to opioids, including Fentanyl are among the leading causes of accidental death in the U.S. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 125 million opioid prescriptions were dispensed\u00a0to American patients in 2023 to treat moderate to severe pain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/overdose-prevention\/about\/prescription-opioids.html#:~:text=Approximately%20125%20million%20opioid%20prescriptions,dose%20in%20the%20smallest%20quantity.\">according<\/a> to the CDC. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/topic\/medical-cannabis\">medical marijuana<\/a> has been doing its part to help treat pain safely and effectively.<\/p>\n<p>One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/markets\/cannabis\/24\/01\/36578723\/huge-study-reveals-cannabis-provides-similar-pain-relief-benefits-as-opioids-without-negative-co\">largest studies to date<\/a>, which viewed 90 randomized controlled trials involving 22,028 participants, weighed the pain-alleviating potential of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medical marijuana<\/a>\u00a0versus opioids. The study was undertaken by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research\u00a0and\u00a0Health Canada. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10773353\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> showed opioids and medical\u00a0marijuana\u00a0both offer\u00a0moderate improvements in pain intensity for the\u00a0treatment of non-cancer\u00a0pain, which impacts 20% of people around the world and is generally treated with opioids.<\/p>\n<p>The difference is in the side effects. Participants using medical marijuana were found to be far less likely to abandon treatment due to adverse effects as compared to those using\u00a0opioids.\u00a0That, in addition to the fact cannabis does not cause respiratory depression which can result from opioid consumption.
