Steamworks North Shore<\/a> has cracked its kegs and opened its doors, welcoming guests to its taproom and restaurant for the first time.<\/p>\nThe business opened on Boxing Day, on the ground floor of a mixed-use development at 114 21st\u00a0St. East in North Vancouver.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a strong emphasis on non-alcoholic offerings, which owner Carl McCreath says has been very well received.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re also opening in late December, early January, so that could have something to do with it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s also been a hit is the taproom\u2019s happy hour offering, McCreath said, which is unique to the location.<\/p>\n

McCreath used to be president of the Steamworks restaurant group for around 15 years, but eventually decided he\u2019d rather run his own location. He worked with a leasing agent, and zeroed in on North Van.<\/p>\n
\u201cI took a good look at the Central Lonsdale area, and there just isn\u2019t a lot of restaurants, and there\u2019s lots of people looking for somewhere to go,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it\u2019s actually been unbelievable since we\u2019ve been open \u2013 the amount of people that tell me they live, like, two blocks away, and they\u2019re just so happy to have an amenity like this in their neighborhood,\u201d McCreath said. \u201cIt\u2019s been incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Things have been humming along at his 140-seat restaurant so far, and he looks forward to opening up his huge, 130-seat patio once the weather, and his service, warms up a bit.<\/p>\n
McCreath said he\u2019s been spending lots of time on the North Shore in recent years, as he\u2019s been dating someone that lives here.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really enjoy it,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve always thought the North Shore, if you can actually be lucky enough to work and live [here], it\u2019s like the perfect community.\u201d<\/p>\n
McCreath said he enjoys the community so much that he\u2019s just signed a lease to make it his home.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, the goal was to have a community restaurant, get to know the locals, be an owner-operator, worry about my four walls, just become part of the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
And when it comes to running the business, McCreath said he\u2019s pretty hands on.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m bussing tables, getting the door right now,\u201d he said \u201cAs we talk, I\u2019m making the floor plan for tonight, going through the reservations. I\u2019m definitely not an absentee owner.\u201d<\/p>\n
