Last winter they made 200, and the seal population is growing as a result. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a snow cave,\u201d says Vincent Biard, a PhD student and volunteer from the University of Eastern Finland. \u201cThe seals come from under and dig into the snow drifts to create a cave where they can give birth and raise their young.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside data-spacefinder-role=\"supporting\" class=\"dcr-1oak5ld\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 22 14\" style=\"fill:var(--pullquote-icon);\" class=\"dcr-scql1j\"><path d=\"M5.255 0h4.75c-.572 4.53-1.077 8.972-1.297 13.941H0C.792 9.104 2.44 4.53 5.255 0Zm11.061 0H21c-.506 4.53-1.077 8.972-1.297 13.941h-8.686c.902-4.837 2.485-9.411 5.3-13.941Z\"\/><\/svg><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"dcr-zzndwp\"><p>Long-term we don\u2019t know if snow drifts are going to be sufficient. So the team is developing artificial nest boxes<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<footer><cite>Vincent Biard, volunteer<\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Volunteers meet at first light and work until dusk. They get around on foot or skis, dragging their equipment with them over a distance of 10km. Biard describes the day as \u201ckind of fun\u201d, and adds, \u201cyou actually have an impact, which is nice. If we don\u2019t do it, then they would just go extinct quite quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">More than 300 pups have been born in artificial snowdrifts since they started making them in 2014. \u201cWe are on a rising growth curve, so things still look pretty nice,\u201d says Jari Ilmonen, coordinator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metsa.fi\/en\/project\/our-saimaa-seal-life\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Our Saimaa Seal Life<\/a>, which is an EU-funded programme. \u201cWe are doing what we can, so we have to have hope and positive thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Saimaa seals are less than 1.5 metres long and each one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metsa.fi\/en\/project\/our-saimaa-seal-life\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">has a unique fur pattern<\/a> \u2013 individual to each animal, like human fingerprints. In the late 1980s their population dwindled to its lowest point, with fewer than 200 left, driven by hunting and deaths caused by fish traps. Accidental deaths in fishing nets remain a challenge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"1406aae2-7003-4351-bf50-c67b3e831f4f\" data-spacefinder-role=\"immersive\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-imskkt\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-lvclai\"><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\"\/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Now, the seals are fully protected but the threat of the climate emergency looms large. Between <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10584-024-03797-0#:~:text=Negative%20effects%20of%20mild%20winters,formation%20during%20the%20pupping%20season.\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">1925 and 2002<\/a>, the maximum thickness of the ice decreased by 1.5cm a decade. There have already been some winters where there has not been enough snow to create an artificial drift. In some cases the seals have been known to breed elsewhere, but with no snow \u201cjust a few would hang on\u201d, says Ilmonen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"c7be1915-fb0b-4dbb-8e1d-e841a7b59d07\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-eyv1cr\"><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\"\/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">However, scientists from the University of Eastern Finland are working on plan B.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">They are creating artificial dens, or nest boxes, that mimic the real thing, with <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/aqc.3851\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">preliminary research<\/a> showing the seals use them for resting, giving birth and nursing their young. The nest boxes could be used in ice-free winters, researchers say. Biard says: \u201cThe long-term perspective is we don\u2019t know if snow drifts are going to be sufficient.
