{"id":60370,"date":"2025-01-31T17:01:16","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T17:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/expiration-cap-removed-from-javascript-cookies-in-webkit-browsers\/"},"modified":"2025-01-31T17:01:16","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T17:01:16","slug":"expiration-cap-removed-from-javascript-cookies-in-webkit-browsers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=60370","title":{"rendered":"Expiration Cap Removed From JavaScript Cookies In WebKit Browsers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>If you recall, in February 2019, Apple published a post on the <a href=\"https:\/\/webkit.org\/blog\/8613\/intelligent-tracking-prevention-2-1\/\">WebKit blog<\/a>, which introduced version <strong>2.1<\/strong> of their <strong>Intelligent Tracking Prevention<\/strong> browser mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>In this version, Safari (and soon <strong>all<\/strong> WebKit browsers, including browser apps on iOS and iPadOS) placed an <strong>expiration limit<\/strong> on browser cookies set with JavaScript. It was no longer possible to set the expiration date further than <strong>7 days in the future<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent 2022 release (I don\u2019t have the exact date or version number), WebKit has now modified this mechanism to <strong>no longer set an expiration cap on JavaScript cookies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1852 \/ 232;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2022\/11\/javascript-cookie-no-longer-expires.jpg\" title=\"JavaScript Cookies no longer expire in 7 days\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"232\" width=\"1852\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2022\/11\/javascript-cookie-no-longer-expires.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"JavaScript Cookies no longer expire in 7 days\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This does <em>not<\/em> mean that WebKit rolled back the change from ITP 2.1. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>IndexedDB<\/li>\n<li>LocalStorage<\/li>\n<li>Media keys<\/li>\n<li>SessionStorage<\/li>\n<li>Service Worker registrations and cache<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The policy is that if the <strong>site<\/strong> does not <strong>receive a user interaction<\/strong> (click, tap, or keyboard input) in <strong>7 days<\/strong> of <strong>browser use<\/strong>, all this script-writable storage for the site gets removed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Note that 7 days of <em>browser use<\/em> is <strong>not<\/strong> the same as 7 calendar days. The user might use the browser every day, in which case they are the same thing, or the user might take breaks of days, weeks, or even months in between days of browser use.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 3380 \/ 1760;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2022\/11\/browser-use-example.jpg\" title=\"Browser use in 7 days\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1760\" width=\"3380\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2022\/11\/browser-use-example.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Browser use in 7 days\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>With this recent change, <strong>JavaScript cookies are now included<\/strong> in this list of storage mechanisms that get purged.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent this deletion from happening, the user must <strong>visit the website<\/strong> and perform a <strong>meaningful user interaction<\/strong> (click, tap, or keyboard input) with the site in <em>first-party context<\/em> (so loading the site in an embedded iframe would not do by itself). This resets the deletion timer back to 0.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Note that embedding the site in an iframe and using the <a href=\"https:\/\/webkit.org\/blog\/8124\/introducing-storage-access-api\/\">Storage Access API<\/a> with it <strong>does<\/strong> count as meaningful interaction with the site and also resets the deletion timer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"24-hour-expiration-cap-in-some-cases-does-still-apply\">24-hour expiration cap in some cases does still apply<\/h2>\n<p>In ITP 2.2, <a href=\"https:\/\/webkit.org\/blog\/8828\/intelligent-tracking-prevention-2-2\/\">WebKit introduced an additional limitation on first-party cookies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If the user clicks a link on a website whose domain is <a href=\"https:\/\/webkit.org\/tracking-prevention\/#classification-as-having-cross-site-tracking-capabilities\">classified by ITP as having tracking capabilities<\/a>, <strong>and<\/strong> the link includes URL query parameters and\/or hash fragments, then an additional limitation is placed on JavaScript cookies set on the page the user navigated to.<\/p>\n<p>In such cases, any JavaScript cookies set on the page will have a <strong>maximum expiration<\/strong> of <strong>one day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This remains unchanged and places great constraints on cookies set by companies like Google or Meta after the user clicks an ad or a \u201cregular\u201d link while using these platforms.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>After a long period of little activity, it seems like WebKit is coming in for another round of tracking preventions to keep ahead of the cat-and-mouse game with ad tech.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/webkit.org\/blog\/13575\/release-notes-for-safari-technology-preview-157\/\">Safari Technology Preview 157<\/a>, there\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/WebKit\/WebKit\/commit\/b0305b173106ba984cbc0475b3681daea137390c\">new feature being tested<\/a> that would limit the expiration of cookies set in HTTP response headers to just 7 days in case the response originates from a server whose IP address subnet does not match that of the site making the request. Yes, that\u2019s a mouthful. You can check <a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@ahava\/109308826676184488\">my Mastodon post<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cunderwood.dev\/2022\/11\/11\/enter-third-party-cloaking-mitigation\/\">Cory Underwood\u2019s blog post<\/a> on the topic for more information.<\/p>\n<p>This places limitations on how effective solutions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/custom-templates\/cookie-monster\/\">server-side Google Tag Manager<\/a> are in creating more durable first-party cookies.<\/p>\n<p>Together with this recent change to how JavaScript cookies no longer have an expiration cap, we arrive at an interesting conclusion: in many cases it\u2019s possible that JavaScript cookies are <strong>more long-lived<\/strong> than their HTTP counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>HTTP response cookies set from servers behind third-party CNAMEs or third-party IP addresses will have their expiration limited to just seven days. JavaScript cookies have no expiration cap (although a <a href=\"https:\/\/lists.webkit.org\/pipermail\/webkit-dev\/2022-January\/032096.html\">400 day maximum<\/a> might be introduced at some point).<\/p>\n<p>However, for this to happen, the user would still need to periodically visit the site and meaningfully interact with it. Just using the browser isn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t read too much into this, though. The difference between <strong>7 days of browser use<\/strong> and <strong>7 calendar days<\/strong> is often non-existent.
