They&#8217;re typically made from flour and water, can be leavened or unleavened, a variety of fats, and allow for a very wide range of textures and flavors. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"a4yOF NlrTp WzoeH SeNKp\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-vilsu507\"><span class=\"lMv7L\"><span>American crackers have a rich history dating back to the 1800s when they were originally created as durable food for sailors. Today, they are a staple in kitchens worldwide, available in countless styles, textures, and flavors\u2014from plain saltines to gourmet infused options.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"Me8pq _32njD WzoeH SeNKp\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-udkj2510\"><span class=\"e4Wvi\"><span>The History of Crackers<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"a4yOF NlrTp WzoeH SeNKp\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-t85y8516\"><span class=\"lMv7L\"><span style=\"color:rgb(32, 33, 34);background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Very likely the American cracker evolved from British nautical biscuits, referred to as hardtack, common on military ships due to them being inexpensive and unsusceptible to spoilage. They were baked hard and crisp to allow some absorption of moisture on sea voyages. <\/span><\/span><span>The &#8220;Boston&#8221; cracker, introduced in the early 1800s, became the first commercially successful variety.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"Me8pq _32njD WzoeH SeNKp\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-kgzms519\"><span class=\"e4Wvi\"><span>Types of Crackers<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"a4yOF NlrTp WzoeH SeNKp\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-vn1ji522\"><span class=\"lMv7L\"><span>There are three basic types of crackers: soda crackers, which have one or more types of flour, baking fat and salt; graham crackers, typically made from a mix of white and whole grain flours, with added sweetness from honey, sugar or molasses; and a water biscuit, which is made with is usually a simple flour and water. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"Me8pq _32njD WzoeH SeNKp\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-b6asb111477\"><span class=\"e4Wvi\"><span>Springboard for More Cracker Recipes<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"a4yOF NlrTp WzoeH SeNKp\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-s2h6x111370\"><span class=\"lMv7L\"><span>Over time I intend to tackle a healthy range of crackers to include: saltines, graham, whole grain, cheese, rice and crispbreads.
