{"id":59539,"date":"2025-01-31T08:11:50","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T08:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/investing\/toto-ive-a-feeling-were-not-in-kansas-anymore-and-2020-in-review\/"},"modified":"2025-01-31T08:11:50","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T08:11:50","slug":"toto-ive-a-feeling-were-not-in-kansas-anymore-and-2020-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=59539","title":{"rendered":"Toto, I\u2019ve a feeling we\u2019re not in Kansas anymore and 2020 in review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-body-1788736722507626972\" itemprop=\"description articleBody\">\n<p>Usually at this time of year I publish <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retirementinvestingtoday.com\/2020\/01\/insanity-and-2019-in-review.html\" target=\"_blank\">a year in review<\/a>\u00a0which covers a little of the qualitative and a lot of the quantitative.\u00a0 Given the year we\u2019ve just had, along with quantitative needs now being significantly lessened given the stage of my FIRE life I\u2019m currently in, I feel it\u2019s worthy to flip that weighting as it really has been a year to both remember and to forget.\u00a0 Additionally and hopefully once you see the qualitative you\u2019ll understand why it\u2019s been a long time between blog drinks.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s get the quantitative stuff out of the way.\u00a0 In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retirementinvestingtoday.com\/2018\/11\/fire-day.html\" target=\"_blank\">my purist FIRE plan<\/a> I was aiming to spend the lesser of:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>up to 2.5% of initial FIRE wealth plus investment expenses of around 0.2% uprated for inflation annually.\u00a0 For 2020 that gave me a drawdown target of around \u00a326,084 plus investment expenses.<\/li>\n<li>up to 85% of my annual dividends.\u00a0 Dividends were a car crash this year. Once the laggards make their final payments I expect them to be down around 29% year on year.\u00a0 For 2020 that gave me a drawdown target of around \u00a319,848<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjDAEcL2TdOQjPLwTy5SywTDppuqJRHfam_Y341m0JUntIQYvFTAVJPDlkZQJVyMijB7rSJdPFJZaBaE46e2zD2wiNRLkl_pQvFDtrclR1RLI7HgkEo7VVo7Yrwb1r62QUxIM9FbxO4nV1y\/s638\/210101-1.png\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"RIT Annual Dividends\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"611\" data-original-width=\"638\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjDAEcL2TdOQjPLwTy5SywTDppuqJRHfam_Y341m0JUntIQYvFTAVJPDlkZQJVyMijB7rSJdPFJZaBaE46e2zD2wiNRLkl_pQvFDtrclR1RLI7HgkEo7VVo7Yrwb1r62QUxIM9FbxO4nV1y\/w400-h383\/210101-1.png\" title=\"RIT Annual Dividends\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i>Click to enlarge, RIT Annual Dividends<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In comparison, during year 2 of FIRE, I withdraw from my wealth a total \u00a319,022.\u00a0 I met my FIRE goals but boy did it occur unconventionally.\u00a0 So let\u2019s switch to the story to explain that which is hopefully the interesting bit.<span\/><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"more\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s firstly recap on where we were at after 2019, my first full year of FIRE:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.retirementinvestingtoday.com\/2019\/06\/back-to-powerful-fi.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cyprus had taught me<\/a>\u00a0that regular access to meaningful family and friends is really important with FIRE changing some of those dynamics.<\/li>\n<li>I was also really wrestling with my purpose which included was the career (as opposed to the job) I left behind actually part of it.<\/li>\n<li>We had also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retirementinvestingtoday.com\/2020\/01\/insanity-and-2019-in-review.html\" target=\"_blank\">applied for a visa to Australia<\/a>\u00a0which was expected to take many months if not years to process.\u00a0 While that occurred I was going to focus on becoming a \u2018human being\u2019 vs a \u2018human doing\u2019 for a while with no quick whipsawing changes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>We were also struggling being back in the South East of England and concluding it was no longer home.\u00a0 Loss of friends who had left because of Brexit along with the busyness and constant noise didn\u2019t help.<\/li>\n<li>I also had a temporary job which was absorbing about 2-3 days of my week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With this in mind 2020 started as planned.\u00a0 A little bit of job, a reinvigorated focus on my fitness and a lot of getting comfortable in my new FIRE skin.\u00a0 Then a little something called COVID-19 descended upon us.\u00a0 The temporary job went away and we realised that our FIRE flat (albeit a very nice flat) living arrangements were not conducive to lockdowns\/quarantines\/home arrest.\u00a0 We longed for the space that our Cyprus living arrangements gave us but we were also conscious not to panic and continued to be.<\/p>\n<p>An alternative job opportunity also appeared.\u00a0 It carried some interest but I wouldn\u2019t say purpose but where it became really interesting was that I could see the role possibly able to be done via \u2018work from home\u2019 from anywhere in the world plus also being flexible from a number of days per week perspective.\u00a0 Hopefully, you can see where that is going\u2026\u00a0 So I took it on.<\/p>\n<p>By mid-year the UK was Eating Out to Help Out.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t participate and just continued being.\u00a0 Improving our home cooking skills, increased exercise patterns given the good weather and by now were 99% convinced the UK really wasn\u2019t for us.<\/p>\n<p>By the autumn the UK was starting to get excited by COVID-19 again.\u00a0 In Australia it was a very different story.\u00a0 They had gone for eradication and border closures.\u00a0 This meant few flights, flight caps on what was flying, state wide limits on numbers allowed to immigrate and passenger flight cancellations right up to a few hours before flight time.\u00a0 A real mess when our situation was combined with the two countries situation\u2026\u00a0 Amongst all of this our Australia visa was granted with a strict \u2018must enter by\u2019 date. It was time to decide.<\/p>\n<p>On the 31 October England started its next 4 week lockdown and I could see that if we didn\u2019t move quickly we might not make it to Australia before that must enter date passed so it was time to try and leave.\u00a0 The only problem was no flight availability because of the Australia flight caps\/state limits combined with a constantly changing set of rules in England to navigate through.\u00a0 It was time to use some of that hard earned FIRE wealth and buy ourselves a passage to Australia:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Regular airline calls exposed some cancelled Flexible Business Class tickets on only a few days notice.\u00a0 SOLD for the price of a very good quality family hatchback car.\u00a0 The race to get ourselves ready was now on.<\/li>\n<li>Car sold at well less than real value through a company who advertises regularly.\u00a0 The problem to solve for us was time to sell not value of the car.<\/li>\n<li>Gave notice on our rental flat in the UK while sitting on the runway at Heathrow just in case those flights were cancelled on short notice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Moving our belongings on short notice was relatively straight forward as we continue to be quite minimalist buying only what brings us true value.\u00a0 That approach once again gave us huge flexibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Upon landing in Australia it was straight into 14 days of hotel quarantine.\u00a0 The less said about it the better but in our case I do believe prisoners get better treatment and they don\u2019t have to pay $\u2019000\u2019s for the privilege.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of quarantine, life where we have rented (and given our short time here are already talking about settling) is currently bliss.\u00a0 We might just have found paradise with an abandoned beach, a lake and plenty of forest all close by.\u00a0 We also have a house with plenty of outdoor space which is costing us about 2\/3 of what our South East England flat did.\u00a0 COVID wise life is also quite normal because of our chosen location along with the Australian eradication policy.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve also spent some time with some meaningful friends and family.\u00a0 I\u2019m also \u2018working from home\u2019 4 days per week and where we are located has more activity\/sporting clubs on our doorstep than you can poke a stick at.\u00a0 So it\u2019s now time to again stop \u2018doing\u2019 and start \u2018being\u2019 again.\u00a0 Being that includes maximising the great outdoors we have available to us.<\/p>\n<p>Switching back to quantitative again just to check-in on the FIRE wealth situation.\u00a0 One year ago wealth was \u00a31,438,000.\u00a0 As I type this wealth is \u00a31,497,000 made possible by investment returns of 5.4% and low wealth withdrawal helped by that part-time job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a
