I\u2019m not gonna lie,
\nsometimes working on the Little Yellow Free Pantry is exhausting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each time I fill it up
\nrequires 2 trips outside \u2013 first to check and see what is needed.\u00a0 <\/span>Then back inside, downstairs, fill the basket
\nwith necessary items, back upstairs, and outside again to put the items inside
\nthe pantry.<\/span><\/p>\n

And sometimes\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes when I turn the corner on the
\nsidewalk with my full basket, heading back to the pantry, I see a guest
\nstanding there.<\/span><\/p>\n

And sometimes\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes instead of
\nthinking, \u201cOh good!\u00a0 <\/span>A guest!\u00a0 <\/span>I will get to chat and give food directly to
\nthem!\u201d, sometimes\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>When I am tired or
\nmaybe cranky.\u00a0 <\/span>When I am rushed or
\nstressed.\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes I think the opposite\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUgh \u2013 a guest.\u00a0 <\/span>That means they may take most of what is in
\nmy basket.\u00a0 <\/span>Which means ANOTHER trip
\ndownstairs for me.\u00a0 <\/span>Fill the basket
\nAGAIN.\u00a0 <\/span>Go outside AGAIN\u2026\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes I don\u2019t see the
\nguest as an opportunity for kindness, but as a burden on my time.<\/span><\/p>\n

I admit that.\u00a0 <\/span>I dislike that I have that reaction
\nsometimes, but I am being honest here \u2013 I DO feel that way sometimes.<\/span><\/p>\n

As I did today.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was taking a quick half
\nhour lunch break from work.\u00a0 <\/span>Before I made
\nsomething to eat, I popped out to the pantry to take stock of what was
\nneeded.\u00a0 <\/span>I made a mental list and headed
\ndown to the storage shelves.\u00a0 <\/span>I packed
\nthe basket nice and heavy and went back outside.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turned the corner.<\/span><\/p>\n

A guest.<\/span><\/p>\n

My mind didn\u2019t immediately
\nsnap to kindness mode.<\/span><\/p>\n

It went to \u201cburden mode\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

But I walked up and said hello
\nto the guest anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n

And item by item I offered
\nthem what I had just brought out.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They smiled.\u00a0 <\/span>Said yes to many things, no to a few
\nthings.\u00a0 <\/span>We got into a rhythm \u2013 hold up
\nitem, say what it is, yes or no, put in bag or pantry.\u00a0 <\/span>Over and over and over.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh yes!\u201d to tuna.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes please,\u201d to cereal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes \u2013 for the children,\u201d
\nto ravioli.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYESSSS!\u00a0 <\/span>OH YES PLEASE!\u201d to a tube of toothpaste.<\/span><\/p>\n

And in the end \u2013 a small
\ncandy bar.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis is for YOU.\u00a0 <\/span>Not for children,\u201d I said and smiled.<\/span><\/p>\n

My mindset changed.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This was not a
\nburden.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This was an opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n

An opportunity for
\nengagement.\u00a0 <\/span>For interaction.\u00a0 <\/span>For COMMUNITY.<\/span><\/p>\n

For kindness.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we had gone through
\nthe basket the guest smiled and said, \u201cI am so lucky today!!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You and me both.\u00a0 <\/span>So lucky today.<\/span><\/p>\n

We stood in the
\nsunshine.\u00a0 <\/span>We breathed in the fresh
\nair.\u00a0 <\/span>We exchanged canned goods and
\nsmiles.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another day.\u00a0 <\/span>More luck.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes all it takes is
\na slight shift in perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n
