Recently, I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/session-attribution-with-ga4-measurement-protocol\/\">an article that discussed the nuances of session attribution<\/a> with Measurement Protocol.<\/p>\n<p>One of the pain points of any data ingestion setup is <strong>how to debug it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2350 \/ 1432;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/02\/debugview-no-events.jpg\" title=\"No events in DebugView\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1432\" width=\"2350\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/02\/debugview-no-events.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"No events in DebugView\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Measurement Protocol hits are <strong>not<\/strong> automatically surfaced in <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/7201382?hl=en\">GA4\u2019s DebugView<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll show you how to make those hits pop up in the debug stream. You just need to add an <strong>Event Parameter<\/strong> named <code>debug_mode<\/code>, and set its value to <code>1<\/code>. The value can be either a <strong>string<\/strong> or a <strong>number<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0I had success with both.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1800 \/ 598;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/02\/debug-mode.jpg\" title=\"Debug Mode\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"598\" width=\"1800\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/02\/debug-mode.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Debug Mode\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The main caveat<\/strong> seems to be that in order for hits to appear in DebugView, the <strong>Client ID<\/strong> or <strong>User ID<\/strong> <em>must<\/em> have prior data collected. When I tried with a Client ID I generated randomly, nothing appeared in DebugView. Only once I sent a Client ID which I knew had prior data collected to GA4, did the hits start showing up in the stream.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1598 \/ 644;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/02\/debug-mode-event.jpg\" title=\"Event in DebugView\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"644\" width=\"1598\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/02\/debug-mode-event.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Event in DebugView\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Note that the <code>debug_mode<\/code> parameter needs to be in <em>every<\/em> event hit of the batch. Only events that have the parameter will be surfaced in DebugView.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Simple tips are often the best, and this was hopefully simple indeed.<\/p>\n<p>I would like it better if you could specify <code>debug_mode<\/code> on the request level instead of event by event.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also like to understand better why events won\u2019t show up in DebugView if the Client ID has no prior data processed \u2013\u00a0seems like a relic of some previous version of GA4 where this was a requirement for Measurement Protocol in general.<\/p>\n<p>Let me know in the comments if you have questions or additional insight into this functionality.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Measurement Protocol for GA4 is still rather, well, rough, it can be used to augment existing collection quite nicely.
