Filled with more than 400 years of\u00a0antiquity\u00a0and culture, the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM)\u00a0announces\u00a0the opening of \u201cPalace Seen and Unseen: A Convergence of History and Archaeology.\u201d Set to\u00a0debut\u00a0June 26, 2021, this new exhibition\u00a0explores\u00a0the Palace of the Governors as a public building and a storied place.<\/p>\n

Reflecting current archaeological and historical perspectives,\u00a0\u201cPalace Seen and Unseen\u201d\u00a0draws from historic documents, photographs, and archaeological and architectural studies produced by its former residents, visitors, stewards, and scholars. When the dynamic\u00a0expertise\u00a0of historians\u00a0and archaeologists\u00a0converges, a richer story and better understanding emerges. It is this integrative approach to what is seen and unseen that guides the themes explored by this\u00a0exhibition. There is no better place for this to happen than at the Palace of the Governors.<\/p>\n

Guest curators Cordelia (Dedie) Snow\u00a0and Stephen (Steve) Post\u00a0have\u00a0nearly\u00a050 years of\u00a0combined\u00a0experience with Palace architecture, history, and archaeology. Their firsthand experience excavating within\u00a0the\u00a0Palace walls and\u00a0on\u00a0its grounds provides\u00a0a unique, expert perspective that visitors\u00a0will\u00a0appreciate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Palace\u2019s adobe architecture provides us with a unique backdrop to tell its 400-year story through the words, images, and objects of its many residents and visitors,\u201d\u00a0explain Snow and\u00a0Post.\u00a0\u201cJust\u00a0when you think you might be getting a handle on the archaeology or history of the Palace, something new crops up. Just as the puzzle always seems to be missing\u00a0pieces, it\u00a0grows even larger.\u201d<\/p>\n

All\u00a0the archaeological objects selected were excavated by either\u00a0Snow\u00a0or\u00a0Post\u00a0and were dug up from Palace floors or the former Armory grounds \u2013 where the NMHM Domenici Building now stands.<\/p>\n
