Tesla Inc.<\/strong> TSLA<\/span> CEO Elon Musk <\/strong>reiterated his criticism of LiDAR on Wednesday but explained that he is not fundamentally against the technology.<\/p>\n

What Happened:<\/strong> \u201cObviously, humans drive without shooting lasers out of their eyes. I mean, unless you\u2019re Superman\u2026. humans drive with eyes and a neural net and a brain neural net, sort of biological\u2026 the digital equivalent of eyes and a brain are cameras and digital neural nets or AI,\u201d Musk said in the company\u2019s fourth-quarter earnings call. <\/p>\n

Musk said that LiDAR is simply the \u201cwrong solution\u201d for self-driving cars on roads. However, his rocket manufacturing company SpaceX\u2019s Dragon spacecraft continues to use it for docking with the space station, he said. <\/p>\n

Why It Matters:<\/strong> Musk\u00a0has previously criticized LiDAR,\u00a0terming it a “crutch<\/a>“. None of the company\u2019s sold vehicles have lidars. In 2022, the company also removed ultrasonic sensors from its vehicles to rely solely on cameras.<\/p>\n

However, not all are in agreement with Musk\u2019s decision to rely solely on cameras for autonomous driving. <\/p>\n

“\u2026you really do need significantly more hardware than Tesla is putting in the vehicles to build a robotaxi that’s not just as safe but especially safer than a human,”\u00a0Zoox<\/strong>\u00a0co-founder\u00a0Jesse Levinson<\/strong>\u00a0opined in October<\/a>\u00a0while adding that there is a need for sensor data despite advancements in AI to protect against camera malfunctions and ensure fully safe rides.<\/p>\n

Alphabet Inc.\u2019s\u00a0autonomous ride-hail company\u00a0Waymo<\/strong>\u00a0continues to use LiDAR<\/a>\u00a0in its robotaxis.\u00a0<\/p>\n
