It\u2019s back to that old chestnut of the cheap pub lunch, or
\nrather the lack of it! Boak & Bail<\/b>ey have written on the subject recently
\nand reached pretty much the same conclusion as the rest of us – decent and affordable
\npub grub is no longer a given, at least in areas of the country. As regular readers
\nwill know, I have made my own thoughts about food in pubs, quite clear over the
\nyears, see \u201cIs<\/b><\/i> a cheap and cheerful pub lunch too much to ask
\nfor?\u201d<\/b><\/i> <\/span>Unfortunately, it is, especially <\/span>in Londo<\/b>n and the south
\neast<\/b>, where cheap, decent and honest lunches have almost vanished from the region\u2019s
\npubs and bars, although this isn\u2019t the case in other parts of the country. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Visits over the past few years to Bath, Birmingham, Burton, the
\nBlack Country, Manchester <\/b>and Sheffield<\/b> have demonstrated that what the rest of
\nthe country enjoys, those who live in this corner of the kingdom, lack. Unless
\nyou know where to look, that is. However, that can be difficult, at times,
\nalthough the best option here is to look out for special offers, such as
\nreductions on certain days of the week, rather than at peak times. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

On Friday<\/b>, for example, I spent a couple of hours in the small,
\nand attractive west Kent<\/b> town of Westerham.<\/b> I visited all three pubs in the
\ntown centre, and in due course will be writing a post about my visit. For now, it\u2019s
\nworth mentioning a couple of promotional offers that I noticed in the Greene
\nKing<\/b> run King\u2019s Arms,<\/a><\/u><\/b> a former coaching inn situated in the heart of the town. For
\ndetails, see the attached photos, although being of a certain age, it\u2019s worth
\nhighlighting the \u201cSenior\u2019s Menu\u201d <\/i><\/b>menu offering that runs Monday <\/b>to Friday 12:00
\npm<\/b> to 5:00 pm<\/b> allowing diners to choose from a selection of smaller portion
\nmain courses. Two courses for \u00a310<\/b>, or three courses for \u00a312.50. <\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Now, the King\u2019s Arms<\/b> is an imposing 17 room<\/b> hotel, with a
\ncontingent of kitchen, waiting and bar staff taking care of guests\u2019 needs. It
\nis therefore good commercial sense to make full use of their set-up to sell a
\nfew extra meals, at lunchtimes. Not so for your town centre local though, or
\nperhaps not even for your idyllic country pub. Last year\u2019s post attracted a
\nsignificant number of comments, including several from people in the licensed
\ntrade, which laid bare some of the problems faced by pub owners when it comes
\nto providing food for their customers. <\/p>\n

Apart from the obvious requirement to maintain high
\nstandards of food hygiene, the biggest issue seems to be finding, and then
\nbeing able to afford, a decent and reliable chef. If you are sensible, and don\u2019t
\nwant all that hassle, then stick to the pre-prepared stack of cheese rolls,
\nbaps, cobs or whichever bakery term is appropriate for the region. Wrapped in clingfilm,
\nand displayed on the bar, in a basic, transparent cabinet, what could be more
\nwelcoming for punters in search of a bit of \u201cblotting paper\u201d<\/i><\/b> to soak up some of
\nthat beer. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Alternatively, if you wish to be a little more, up-market, then
\nwhy not go down the charcuterie option, as the Fuggle\u2019s<\/b> beer caf\u00e9s in Tonbridge
\n<\/b>and Tunbridge Wells<\/b> have done? \u00a0<\/span>Although
\nmainly offering a selection of cheeses and cold meats, both outlets have facilities
\nfor limited hot snacks such as toasted sandwiches and hot dogs. On Thursdays<\/b>,
\nthe latter are on offer at just \u00a36.00<\/b> each and given that the \u201cdogs\u201d <\/i><\/b>inside the
\nrolls are proper German Bratwursts<\/b>, this is a good offer, and one I have taken
\nadvantage of several times over the past year. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Last Thursday<\/b> was no exception, but what made the offer even
\nbetter on that occasion, was a free pint of Larkin\u2019s Best Bitter <\/b>\u2013 itself a rare
\nfind, as I shall explain later. Fuggle\u2019s<\/b> operate a “loyalty card”<\/b> scheme in both
\ntheir outlets, which is exclusively for cask ale lovers. Participants are given
\na card, containing 10 spaces – one for each pint of cask ordered. The bar
\nperson will stamp the holder\u2019s card, at time of purchase. Once all 10 spaces
\nare stamped the card holder is entitled to a free point of cask. The scheme
\nonly applies to cask ale and a full pint must be ordered to acquire a stamp. There
\nare no time limits involved, but the free pint awarded at completion of the
\ncard, must also be cask, rather than keg.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

To my mind, this is an excellent way of promoting cask beer,
\nand a nice gesture on behalf of Alex Gregg, <\/b>the owner and founder of Fuggle\u2019s.<\/b>
\nLast Thursday, Larkin\u2019s Best<\/b> was one of the cask ales gracing the bar at the
\nTonbridge<\/b> outlet. I knew this in advance, as Fuggle\u2019s<\/b> list all their draught beers
\n\u2013 both cask and keg, on their joint website.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I said earlier that Larkin\u2019s
\nBest Bitter<\/b> was a rare find, and I say this because this excellent,
\nfull-bodied beer is hardly ever seen in local pubs. Most of them prefer to
\nstock the weaker, and to my mind, inferior Traditional<\/b>, which at 3.4%,<\/b>
\nis a full percentage point lower in strength than the Best,<\/b> a feature
\nthat is reflected in both the body and the taste of the beer.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Larkin\u2019s <\/b>founder, the sadly deceased Bob Dockerty<\/b>,
\nalways claimed that \u201cTrad\u201d<\/i><\/b>, as it is known in the trade, was
\npopular in rural pubs, due to its low strength. Drinkers could enjoy a couple
\nof pints of this beer, and then drive home, safe in the knowledge they were
\nunlikely to fail the breathalyser. This may well have been the case, but for
\nthose times when you are NOT<\/b> driving, Trad<\/b> fails to satisfy and
\nis not really the beer for those who like a bit of body in their beer. Imagine
\nmy sense of anticipation then as the barman pulled my rich, foaming, and
\nfull-bodied pint of Larkin\u2019s Bes<\/b>t, and I\u2019m pleased to report it tasted
\nevery bit as good as it looked. <\/p>\n

The hot dog <\/b>too was enjoyable (see photo above), and I went for the German
\n<\/b>option which came with Sauerkraut, crispy onions, curry ketchup, and mustard. I
\ngave the curry ketchup a miss, as I\u2019m not a fan of tomato sauce. With that excellent
\npint of Larkin\u2019s Best<\/b>, it was the perfect combination for an early lunch. I\u2019m
\nsure that other landlords, could put on a similar offering, especially as there\u2019s
\nlittle in the way of additional expenditure, such as expensive cooking equipment,
\nextraction and separate preparation areas required.<\/p>\n
