{"id":57191,"date":"2025-01-30T06:56:15","date_gmt":"2025-01-30T06:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/gtmtips-prevent-sgtm-from-setting-the-fpid-cookie\/"},"modified":"2025-01-30T06:56:15","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T06:56:15","slug":"gtmtips-prevent-sgtm-from-setting-the-fpid-cookie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=57191","title":{"rendered":"#GTMTips: Prevent SGTM From Setting The FPID Cookie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/fpid-cookie-google-analytics-server-side-tagging\/\"><code>FPID<\/code> cookie<\/a> is what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/server-side-tagging-google-tag-manager\/\">server-side Google Tag Manager<\/a> would prefer to use for your <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-platform\/tag-manager\/server-side\/send-data\">Google Analytics 4<\/a> tracking.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a cookie set in the <strong>HTTP response<\/strong> from the server, and it\u2019s flagged as <code>HttpOnly<\/code>, which means it\u2019s only accessible by a web server running on the domain on which it was set.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing wrong with the technology, and I do recommend that server-side setups toggle it on by default.<\/p>\n<p>However, there might be cases where you want the server-side <strong>GA4 client<\/strong> (which handles the incoming GA4 requests) to occasionally <em>not<\/em> use the <code>FPID<\/code> cookie. If the value of the <strong>Name<\/strong> field in the <strong>Server-managed<\/strong> cookie settings of the <strong>GA4 client<\/strong> is ever empty (blank string), then the client will <em>not<\/em> write the <code>FPID<\/code> cookie in the HTTP response, nor will it access an existing <code>FPID<\/code> cookie to generate the <code>client_id<\/code> value for outgoing GA4 requests.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1366 \/ 774;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/04\/fpid-not-set.jpg\" title=\"FPID is not set\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"774\" width=\"1366\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/04\/fpid-not-set.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"FPID is not set\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>So the trick is to <em>conditionally<\/em> set it to blank whenever you <em>don\u2019t<\/em> want GA4 to set or access the <code>FPID<\/code> cookie. In Google Tag Manager, conditional logic is controlled by <strong>variables<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"example-using-the-ga4-measurement-id\">Example using the GA4 measurement ID<\/h2>\n<p>Often, you\u2019ll want the same GA4 client to handle the data streams for multiple different GA4 measurement IDs.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps you want only some of these to use <code>FPID<\/code> and others to keep on using the JavaScript cookie <code>_ga<\/code>. There are scenarios where this makes sense. For example, if you\u2019re using <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/protocol\/ga4\">Measurement Protocol<\/a> to send some hits to a data stream, it might make sense to keep using the <code>_ga<\/code> cookie value, because the server-set Client ID can have unpredictable values if the <strong>Migrate from JavaScript Managed Client ID<\/strong> option is enabled.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the reason, setting this up requires a new <strong>Lookup Table<\/strong> variable in server-side GTM. This is what it could look like:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1786 \/ 1018;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/04\/lookup-fpid.jpg\" title=\"Lookup table for measurement ID\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"1018\" width=\"1786\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/04\/lookup-fpid.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Lookup table for measurement ID\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here you can see that if the incoming request has the GA4 measurement IDs <code>G-123456789<\/code> or <code>G-ABCDEFGHI<\/code>, the variable returns the string <code>FPID<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p><em>For all other measurement IDs<\/em>, the variable returns an empty string (the value of the <strong>Default Value<\/strong> field).<\/p>\n<p>The <code>{{Request MID}}<\/code> variable is a <strong>Query Parameter<\/strong> variable, which fetches the value of the <code>&amp;tid<\/code> query parameter from the incoming request (this is where the measurement ID value is held in GA4 streams):<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1784 \/ 514;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/04\/request-mid.jpg\" title=\"Request measurement ID variable\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"514\" width=\"1784\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/04\/request-mid.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Request measurement ID variable\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the <strong>Server Cookie Settings<\/strong> of the GA4 client, we can then utilize the Lookup Table as the <strong>Name<\/strong> of the server cookie:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1114 \/ 614;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/04\/server-cookie-settings.jpg\" title=\"Server cookie settings\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"614\" width=\"1114\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2023\/04\/server-cookie-settings.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Server cookie settings\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This way <code>FPID<\/code> will <em>only<\/em> be set and accessed for the two measurement IDs listed above. For any other ID, server-side GTM will <em>not<\/em> make use of <code>FPID<\/code> for setting the Client ID.<\/p>\n<p>You can extend this example easily by replacing the <code>{{Request MID}}<\/code> with some other variable that returns <code>FPID<\/code> when the cookie should be accessed and a blank string in other scenarios. For example, you could use the <strong>Query Parameter<\/strong> or the <strong>Cookie Value<\/strong> variable types to check if a custom consent parameter or cookie is set, in which case the blank string would be returned and no cookies would be set or accessed by the GA4 client.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this trick is useful to those of you who want to exert this type of control over server-side Google Tag Manager.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FPID cookie is what server-side Google Tag Manager would prefer to use for your Google Analytics 4 tracking.
