Right Around $2.4 Million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>On January 24, Sotheby\u2019s held a single-lot auction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antiquetrader.com\/antiques-news\/declaration-of-independence-continues-to-make-history\">an early copy of the Declaration of Independence<\/a>. Known as the Goodspeed\u2019s-Sang-Streeter copy after its previous owners, it sold for $2.4 million, falling within its $2 &#8211; $4 million presale estimate. On the same day, Christie\u2019s held an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/en\/auction\/important-americana-30593\/overview\">Important Americana auction<\/a> where a different copy of the Declaration sold for $2.47 million. Experts have already noticed increasing interest in historical documents, and results like these prove it.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/buy\/auction\/2025\/the-declaration-of-independence-the-july-1776-essex-broadside\/the-declaration-of-independence-the-july-1776\">Goodspeed\u2019s-Sang-Streeter copy that sold at Sotheby\u2019s<\/a> is an extremely rare broadside printing, with only ten known copies in existence. This printing, called the Exeter broadside after its attribution to printer Robert Luist Fowle of Exeter, New Hampshire, dates to July 1776, making it one of the earliest copies printed for the public. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.antiquetrader.com\/.image\/c_fit%2Ch_800%2Cw_1200\/MjEyNDYwNTg0MTY2MjM3NzA1\/the-jones-declaration-of-independence.png\" height=\"800\" width=\"519\"><figcaption>A copy of the Declaration of Independence was written in the hand of Samuel Jones of New York, who is credited with securing New York&#8217;s ratification of the United States Constitution by breaking the impasse over the inclusion of a Bill of Rights.<\/p>\n<p>Christie&apos;s<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/en\/lot\/lot-the-jones-declaration-of-independence-6519108\/\">copy that sold at Christie\u2019s<\/a> is in the handwriting of Samuel Jones, a member of the New York Assembly who is credited with securing the state\u2019s ratification of the Constitution and ensuring that it would include a bill of rights. It is believed to be from 1788, possibly for the New York Ratification Convention. Jones copied the text as it appears in the 1777 New York State Constitution, the only state constitution that contains the full text of the Declaration of Independence. Christie\u2019s determined that it \u201cis the only eighteenth-century manuscript of the Declaration of Independence known to be held privately.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.antiquetrader.com\/.image\/c_fit%2Ch_800%2Cw_1200\/MjEyNDYwNjg1OTAzMjc1NjQ4\/jones-declaration-handwritten.png\" height=\"800\" width=\"696\"><figcaption>Close-up of the Samuel Jones Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Christie&apos;s<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to its exceptional rarity, the Jones copy has a fascinating discovery story. It was found in a volume of <em>Laws of New York<\/em> purchased as part of an incomplete set at a library sale. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finebooksmagazine.com\/fine-books-news\/3m-declaration-independence-handwritten-manuscript-found-library-book\">Fine Books Magazine<\/a>, the book was worth about $100. <\/p>\n<p>Selby Kiffer, Sotheby\u2019s Senior International Specialist, Books and Manuscripts, believes the \u201cgrowing appreciation among collectors\u201d for historical documents is \u201clargely attributed to the entry of new buyers into the market\u2014some transitioning from other collecting areas\u2014who recognize these documents as undervalued treasures given their rarity and historical significance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cgrowing appreciation\u201d has been observed at several auction houses within the past year. Sotheby\u2019s notably held an auction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antiquetrader.com\/antiques-news\/sothebys-celebrates-the-fourth-with-the-declaration-of-independence\">Founding Documents of the United States<\/a> in June 2024, where a copy of the Declaration of Independence sold for over $3 million and copies of the Constitution and Bill of Rights each sold for over $1 million.
