As such, the term conveys all the legitimacy upon which the scientific method relies.  It should not be tossed around casually like a frisbee in the park.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.australianenvironmentaleducation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Scientific-Method-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"373\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The so-called \u201cGreat Replacement Theory\u201d we are now reading about in mainstream publications is not a theory.  Therefore, it should not be called a theory.  And it should not be graced with capital letters.  Both these practices suggest unearned legitimacy.  And, unearned legitimacy carries great risk.   <\/p>\n<p>We now know that repeatedly making false claims will train people to slowly accept those false claims.  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.3758\/s13423-019-01651-4\" target=\"_blank\">Recent research<\/a> by a team of psychologists and cognitive scientists warns us that we humans tend to increase our belief in any claims\u2014true or false, reasonable or unreasonable, likely or unlikely\u2014the more often we hear or read about them.  So, as we repeatedly encounter something being called a \u201ctheory,\u201d we become more easily inclined to agree that it IS a theory.  Once that happens, it moves into the realm of science.  As such, we begin to attribute it truth status.<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean that a \u201ctheory\u201d is grounded in the scientific method?  Here\u2019s one statement from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/just-a-theory-7-misused-science-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scientific American<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\">A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/21491-what-is-a-scientific-theory-definition-of-theory.html\">scientific theory<\/a>\u00a0is an explanation of some aspect of the natural world that has been substantiated through repeated experiments or testing.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/exhibitions\/darwin\/evolution-today\/what-is-a-theory\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/exhibitions\/darwin\/evolution-today\/what-is-a-theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Museum of Natural History<\/a> expands on this basic principle:<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\">A theory not only explains known facts; it also allows scientists to make predictions of what they should observe if a theory is true. Scientific theories are testable. New evidence should be compatible with a theory. If it isn\u2019t, the theory is refined or rejected. The longer the central elements of a theory hold\u2014the more observations it predicts, the more tests it passes, the more facts it explains\u2014the stronger the theory.<\/p>\n<p>What is now being called the \u201cgreat replacement theory\u201d has nothing of the attributes of a theory.  It has not been \u201csubstantiated through repeated experiments.\u201d  It has not been \u201csubstantiated through testing.\u201d  It does not \u201cexplain known facts.\u201d  It is not \u201ccompatible with new evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/resources\/backgrounders\/the-great-replacement-an-explainer\" target=\"_blank\">Jews are not \u201creplacing\u201d Christians<\/a>.  (As one Jewish studies scholar notes, \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/jewish-experience\/jewish-america\/2021\/november\/replacement-antisemitism-sarna.html\" target=\"_blank\">America\u2019s Jewish birthrate has fallen, and Jews are barely replacing themselves, let alone the white population as a whole<\/a>\u201c).  Nor are people of color \u201creplacing\u201d white people.  True, the demographic profile of the U.S. is changing.  But that is nothing new.  In fact, it has always been the case.  Since the founding of the Republic, new groups of refugees (starting with the Pilgrims), followed by newer groups of immigrants, have continually brought new languages, new musics, new cultural practices, new cuisines, and new religious traditions to these shores.  Given this history that undergirds all American history, it should not surprise us that, as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/08\/23\/most-americans-say-the-declining-share-of-white-people-in-the-u-s-is-neither-good-nor-bad-for-society\/\" target=\"_blank\">one recent study notes<\/a>, most Americans do not care about the \u201cchanging\u201d demographic profile of the American population.  \u201cChange\u201d is the one constant of U.S. demographic history.<\/p>\n<p>But some white Christians are afraid of such scenarios.  Their fears are stoked by right-wing talk-show hosts promoting outlandish fantasies of racist and anti-Semitic \u201cwhat-if\u201d schemes.  As they have been at other times in the past, these schemes are now being interbraided, with the fate of Western history\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2022\/05\/16\/how-blacks-and-jews-are-bound-together-in-white-supremacist-acts-of-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\">two great \u201cothered\u201d groups\u2014Jews and Blacks\u2014being once again bound by linked stereotypes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With fear a powerful motivator, these invented \u201creplacement\u201d plots slip easily into the vaunted category of \u201cfact,\u201d once they are covered with the veneer of science . . . simply by being called a \u201ctheory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or, should I write, \u201cTheory\u201d?  <\/p>\n<p>Adding a capital letter to a word claiming to be something it is not makes matters worse.  As one <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/howtowritebetter.net\/best-selling-author-author-coach-publishing-marketing-consultant\/\" target=\"_blank\">professional author\/editor<\/a> explains it, some people erroneously think that \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/howtowritebetter.net\/writing-wrong-capital-letters-makes-words-look-stupid\/\" target=\"_blank\">sticking a capital letter at the front of a word would make it seem more grand, more important, more worthy of respect.<\/a>\u201d  But, as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/author\/nicole-gallucci\" target=\"_blank\">another professional editor <\/a>notes, this practice is nothing more than \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/capitalizing-first-letter-words-trend\" target=\"_blank\">rogue capitalization<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0  <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtlandry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1702-x-630-10.png\" alt=\"YOUR Words Matter\" width=\"528\" height=\"264\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">All of which is to urge: <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><em>Journalists and politicians: please stop mindlessly repeating the offensive, misleading, and dangerous phrase, \u201cGreat Replacement Theory\u201d<\/em>!  <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">When referring to this notion\u2014which has inspired all too many recent massacres, from El Paso to Buffalo\u2014don\u2019t be afraid to use more words, if more words are required for accuracy.  Call it out for what it is.  How about . . .<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><em>the dangerous claim known as \u201cgreat replacement theory\u201d that is rooted in racist and anti-Semitic paranoia.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Update Nov. 2022<\/em>: I\u2019ve just learned of a new M.A. thesis by Cheryl Hege about \u201cwhite replacement theory\u201d completed from the perspective of political science.  It looks quite promising.
