Today seems a good day to try out an idea I\u2019ve adapted from a weekly meme hosted by Sam at <a href=\"https:\/\/samannelizabeth.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Taking On a World of Words<\/strong><\/a> with which I\u2019m familiar from<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/whatcathyreadnext.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> What Cathy Read Next<\/a>. <\/strong>Coincidentally, <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-28811\" src=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/The-Yellow-Kitchen-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cover image for The Yello Kitchen by Margaux Vialleron\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/The-Yellow-Kitchen-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/The-Yellow-Kitchen.jpg 328w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\"\/>it falls on a Wednesday but I\u2019m plumping for a monthly, or thereabouts, snapshot, aiming to record a little about some of the books I\u2019m reading but don\u2019t plan to review, many of which have been lingering on the shelves for a while. With luck fewer books might slip from my memory but we\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The novel I\u2019m reading<\/strong> is Margaux Vialleron\u2019s enjoyable <em>The Yellow Kitchen<\/em> which I\u2019m about two thirds of the way through. It revolves around three friends in their thirties, one Italian, another with a French mother who has known the third since they were at school. It was the blurb\u2019s mention of a foodie theme that attracted me to this one. The Brexit shadow cast by the referendum which has friends on the same side so angry they\u2019re yelling at each other is ringing loud <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-34450\" src=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Damned-If-I-Do-196x300.webp\" alt=\"Cover image for Damned If I Do by Percival Everett\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Damned-If-I-Do-196x300.webp 196w, https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Damned-If-I-Do.webp 326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\"\/>bells for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The short story collection I\u2019m reading<\/strong> is Percival Everett\u2019s <em>Damned If I Do<\/em> which I\u2019ve almost finished. Expectations were high for this one, given how much I\u2019ve enjoyed Everett\u2019s novels, but I\u2019ve found it disappointing, lacking the sharpness of his longer fiction. I have gleaned that he\u2019s a keen fly fisherman, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-34451\" src=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/The-Booksellers-Tale-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cover image for The Bookseller's Tale by Martin Latham\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/The-Booksellers-Tale-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/The-Booksellers-Tale.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\"\/>The non-fiction book I\u2019m reading<\/strong> is Martin Latham\u2019s <em>The Bookseller\u2019s Tale<\/em>. I knew I\u2019d be on safe ground with this one. Latham is the longest serving Waterstones manager, having run the Canterbury branch for well over thirty years. Unsurprisingly, his book is a hymn of praise to reading and bookishness, packed with titbits of history and literary anecdote. It\u2019s a bit like sitting down for a catch-up with a very knowledgeable, like-minded pal.<\/p>\n<p>What about you?
