{"id":55272,"date":"2025-01-29T10:24:55","date_gmt":"2025-01-29T10:24:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/a-good-credit-card-hack-%f0%9f%92%aa\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T10:24:55","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T10:24:55","slug":"a-good-credit-card-hack-%f0%9f%92%aa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=55272","title":{"rendered":"A Good Credit Card Hack \ud83d\udcaa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Morning!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So right as I went to hit \u201cpublish\u201d on this post, I got hit with a 2nd great credit card tip so you\u2019re gonna get a two-for-one special today \ud83d\ude09 Neither of which, btw, I\u2019d ever heard of before in my 15 years doing this so of course I had to share!<\/p>\n<p>The first comes from my friend, and fellow blog reader, Win (real name!), in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetsaresexy.com\/stupid-subscription-mistake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my $500 subscription mistake<\/a> I shared recently, and as he stated this would have most definitely prevented it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">******<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cI ask my credit card company for a new card with a new number every year. That cancels any services that I pay for automatically. The service contacts me and I decide if I want to give them the new credit card number.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">******<\/p>\n<p>HAH! Brilliant!<\/p>\n<p>I asked him to explain more as I was intrigued as hell by this (was it really just to cut down on subscriptions?? Or was it more of a security hack?) and here\u2019s what he wrote back:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">******<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I tell you the story about my daughter losing my credit card? I let her use it for shopping. She called and said \u201cI lost your card! I\u2019m so sorry!!\u201d She didn\u2019t understand that I\u2019m not liable if someone finds my credit card and uses it. (\n<\/p>\n<p>The next day, I called the credit card company and canceled it. They sent me a new card in the mail. It took 7 to 10 days. I think the pony express was faster than that. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Disadvantages? If you have any online payments like cellphone, Verizon will send you an email saying your credit card didn\u2019t work. You have to contact them to give them your new number. I\u2019ve been doing it for a few years. No problems, but I don\u2019t make many online payments from my credit card. I pay electric, natural gas, etc from my bank account.<\/p>\n<p>I do think it\u2019s a good security idea. There\u2019s a big biz in stolen credit card numbers, so changing your number every year should help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*******<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ok so yeah \u2013 definitely good for security, but what a great way to force yourself TO REVIEW all your subscriptions each year too. <\/strong>And it\u2019s not like it\u2019s just a calendar item that pops up and you can brush it off\u00a0 \u2013 with this route you literally have to take action *right then and there* or the service you\u2019re signed up for will be canceled!<\/p>\n<p>Such a great idea, and for a few solid minutes I actually considered it\u2026 Until I realized I have over 25 places my card is connected to (10\u2019ish bills + 15\u2019ish <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetsaresexy.com\/3-tricks-i-do-to-make-me-a-more-charitable-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charitable donations<\/a>) and there\u2019s no way I\u2019d want to deal with that every year \ud83d\ude43\ud83d\ude43 Def. works best if you only have a few accounts linked up and\/or the patience of Mother Teresa.<\/p>\n<p>Now onto the second hack\u2026<\/p>\n<p>This one comes from my personal proofreader, and blog fan, Lenny Bron, whose trick is a little more invasive but doesn\u2019t require any major changes like that first idea:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*******<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have a new trick I\u2019ve started ever since my C\/C was electronically stolen a few months back (Chase is great at catching that stuff, btw). <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I set my phone to get alerts every time the credit card is used <em>at all<\/em>. So now I know if something weird gets charged (even if it\u2019s a subscription I no longer need) and I can cancel whatever it is right away or at least call the bank to stop the transaction. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So far, the system has been working well! And plus I can monitor if any of those pesky hackers are using my credit cards again!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*******<\/p>\n<p>Another great tip at least in theory! It forces you to review all your charges EVERY DAY which is even better in the \u201cpaying attention\u201d department! Of course, that can get annoying fast if you\u2019re a big swiper, so it would be interesting to see if Lenny\u2019s still doing this a year or two from now \ud83d\ude09 Perfect for those who rarely use their cards though, or even better: those who only keep cards for *emergencies*! You\u2019d know there\u2019s something concerning going on fast in this case!<\/p>\n<p>And btw, on the topic of Lenny, I gotta promote his side hustle here <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetsaresexy.com\/side-hustle-77-online-proofreading-editing-1600-mo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as a proofreader<\/a> as he\u2019s super fun to work with and great at catching all those pesky misstypings of mine (or even made up words, like misstypings!! Don\u2019t you edit this one, Lenny!!).
