His forehead bore wrinkles. Crow\u2019s feet marked the corners of his wide eyes. His veins bulged at the temples. His eyebrows arched up sternly.<\/p>\n<p>Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/independent.academia.edu\/JoachimLeBomin\">Joachim le Bomin<\/a>, an archaeologist at the University of Lyon and the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology in Cairo, the team determined that the marble head dates back to the Egyptian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Ptolemaic-dynasty\">Ptolemaic period<\/a>, which lasted between 305 and 30 B.C.E., according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1Ecv63YVrG\/\">statement<\/a> from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image right\">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/CZU_u-Gd4qInbvXcmq58XhVgGqE=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(768x1024:769x1025)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/04\/37\/0437e3f5-53e3-4417-aab1-448f410dd0c3\/head1.jpg\" alt=\"Head\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Double the size\u00a0of a normal human skull, the ancient marble head was likely part of a larger-than-life statue that loomed over a public space or building.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That means the head dates back at least seven centuries earlier than the ruins of the medieval house it was found in\u2014a \u201ccaptivating enigma\u201d that\u2019s left the team puzzled, as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.labrujulaverde.com\/en\/2025\/01\/a-huge-marble-head-of-a-monumental-statue-from-the-ptolemaic-period-found-in-a-medieval-house-at-taposiris-magna\/\">La Br\u00fajula Verde<\/a><\/em>\u2019s Guillermo Carvajal writes.<\/p>\n<p>At about 15 inches tall\u2014double the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2828153\/#:~:text=The%20general%20shape%20of%20the,ethnicity%2C%20sex%2C%20and%20age.\">size<\/a> of a normal human skull\u2014the marble head was likely part of a larger-than-life statue that loomed over a public space or building, rather than a private residence, as <a href=\"https:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/News\/519438.aspx\">Mohamed Ismail Khaled<\/a>, the secretary-general of Egypt\u2019s Supreme Council of Antiquities, says in the statement. Its body has not been recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed Abdel-Badie, an official at Egypt\u2019s Supreme Council of Antiquities, adds that the statue\u2019s model may have been a prominent public figure or member of the elite, but he likely wasn\u2019t a king, underscoring the importance of Taposiris Magna during the Ptolemaic period.<\/p>\n<p>The name Taposiris Magna comes from the Egyptian \u201cPer Wsir,\u201d which translates to \u201chouse of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Osiris-Egyptian-god\">Osiris<\/a>,\u201d the Egyptian god of both fertility and death. The city and temple were established by the pharaoh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Ptolemy-II-Philadelphus\">Ptolemy II Philadelphus<\/a> between 280 and 270 B.C.E. in honor of the god.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/pI8wjBZKP0Eu_LGIqzvKGrCF2K0=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(1024x653:1025x654)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/aa\/34\/aa34c5f1-f6c5-4e11-8563-d75b181fcedd\/dig_map.jpg\" alt=\"Dig Map\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Dating to the Ptolemaic period, Taposiris Magna is a rich archaeological site on Egypt&#8217;s northern coast.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In more recent years, the site has also generated <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/middle_east\/8000978.stm\">suspicions<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/cleopatra-commits-suicide\">ill-fated<\/a> lovers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Mark-Antony-Roman-triumvir\">Mark Antony<\/a>, a Roman politician and general, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/rehabilitating-cleopatra-70613486\/\">Cleopatra VII<\/a>, the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty, were entombed nearby after their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/question\/How-did-Cleopatra-die#:~:text=With%20the%20arrival%20of%20the,life%2C%20though%20how%20is%20uncertain.\">suicides<\/a> in 30 B.C.E.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/secrets\/cleopatras-lost-tomb-kathleen-martinezs-quest-find-cleopatras-tomb\/2828\/\">Kathleen Martinez<\/a>, a criminal lawyer turned archaeologist who has been digging for Cleopatra\u2019s tomb at the site since 2005, unearthed a small white marble bust that she thinks depicts the last Egyptian queen, infamous for her \u201cromantic and strategic relationships\u201d with Roman leaders Julius Caesar and Antony, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/does-this-statue-found-at-an-ancient-egyptian-temple-really-depict-cleopatra-180985789\/\"><em>Smithsonian <\/em>magazine<\/a>\u2019s Julia Binswanger wrote.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/JbTesM3XbaNSW1GxlGO9fVymqlA=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(500x376:501x377)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/ec\/95\/ec959280-f51a-4b70-b24e-3aef8041300f\/cleopatra.jpeg\" alt=\"Maybe Cleopatra\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Archaeologists debate whether this bust found at Taposiris Magna truly depicts Cleopatra.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But not all archaeologists agreed with Martinez\u2019s claim that the bust depicted Cleopatra.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/the-rise-and-fall-and-rise-of-zahi-hawass-72874123\/\">Zahi Hawass<\/a>, a former Egyptian minister of tourism and antiquities who wasn\u2019t involved with the dig, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/archaeology\/ancient-egyptians\/possible-bust-of-cleopatra-vii-found-at-ancient-egyptian-temple\"><em>Live Science<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Owen Jarus that the statue may date to a period after the queen\u2019s death. \u201cI looked at the bust carefully. It is not Cleopatra at all; it is Roman,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Although Martinez hasn\u2019t found Cleopatra&#8217;s tomb yet, her other incidental discoveries attest to the richness of the ancient city and temple.
