I grew up in Tampa, so it used to by home airport back when I\u2019d do <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/guides\/mileage-runs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mileage runs<\/a>. My parents still live in Tampa, so it\u2019s an airport I return to all the time. On top of that, it\u2019s just generally an awesome mid-size airport \u2014 it\u2019s so easy to use thanks to the central concourse, with several smaller terminals. <\/p>\n<p>Tampa Airport recently previewed its first new terminal in 20 years, and I\u2019m really excited about it! I first wrote about this several weeks ago, but want to provide an update, as details have just been revealed about the terminal\u2019s first tenant.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-basics-of-the-new-tampa-airport-airside-d\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_basics_of_the_new_tampa_airport_airside_d\"\/>The basics of the new Tampa Airport Airside D<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampaairport.com\/business\/airside-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tampa Airport\u2019s new Airside D<\/a> is expected to open to the public in 2028, so the bad news is that we\u2019ll have to wait at least a few more years before this becomes a reality. Groundbreaking and early stages of construction started in very late 2024, even though the design hasn\u2019t yet been finalized.<\/p>\n<p>Airside D is intended to help the airport grow from 25 million to 35 million passengers per year by 2037, so it\u2019s a vital part of the airport\u2019s overall vision for expansion.<\/p>\n<p>The new Tampa Airport Airside D is expected to cost around $1.5 billion to build, and will feature:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A total of 16 gates, including an international passenger arrival processing area, meaning this will be the new terminal for international flights<\/li>\n<li>An orthogonal shape with 600,000 square feet, for greater space and operational efficiency; it\u2019ll be connected from the main terminal by a shuttle system, as is the case with the current setup<\/li>\n<li>A mezzanine level for two airline lounges with views of the airfield and the bay<\/li>\n<li>Shopping and dining locations at the center of the airside, offering 360-degree views of the gates<\/li>\n<li>A large open space featuring intuitive wayfinding and natural light<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The airport has released renderings of the design concept for Airside D. The renderings show soaring ceilings, bright interiors, and an international arrivals corridor that wraps around the building, and more. Well, there\u2019s now a major update. It has just been revealed that Delta will be one of the primary tenants of Airside D.<\/p>\n<p>Delta will have at least six gates in the new airside, and will also be building an 18,000 square foot Sky Club. That\u2019s pretty exciting for Delta, since the airline will have at least six of the 16 gates in the airside, if not more.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1019006\/OMAAT_InContent --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>More broadly, I\u2019m excited to see the lounge portfolio at Tampa Airport grow, and I\u2019m curious to see what kind of terminal \u201cmusical chairs\u201d we see.<\/p>\n<p>Currently Tampa has only three lounges \u2014 an American Admirals Club in Airside F, a Delta Sky Club in Airside E, and the International Club Lounge in Airside F (used by Virgin Atlantic). Those are the only options, and there are no other lounges. <\/p>\n<p>While I love Tampa Airport\u2019s small concourses for the purposes of easily getting from the curb to the gate, the various concourses aren\u2019t connected airside, so this isn\u2019t ideal in terms of lounge access. For example, airlines like Discover and Edelweiss depart from Airside F, but can\u2019t offer their premium passengers any lounge access.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we know that Delta is moving to Airside D, I can\u2019t help but wonder what this means for the overall terminal dynamics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I think it\u2019s likely that American and United won\u2019t be moving to Airside D, since it\u2019s unlikely they\u2019d have the available gate space, with Delta taking at least six of the 16 gates, plus international flights departing from there<\/li>\n<li>This means that the Delta Sky Club in Airside E will become vacant; could we see United move from Airside A to Airside E, and take over the space of the former Delta Sky Club?<\/li>\n<li>With that in mind, I suspect the second lounge in Airside D may not be an airline lounge, but will instead be a contract lounge that\u2019s accessible <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/guides\/priority-pass-airport-lounge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with Priority Pass<\/a>, since that\u2019s good for passengers in general, and it\u2019s also valuable in terms of all international airlines having somewhere to send premium passengers<\/li>\n<li>While I\u2019d love to see it, I suspect that Tampa Airport won\u2019t be getting a credit card lounge, like an <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/guides\/amex-centurion-lounges\/\">Amex Centurion Lounge<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/guides\/capital-one-lounges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capital One Lounge<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/guides\/chase-sapphire-lounges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chase Sapphire Lounge<\/a>; however, you never know\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I wonder if we\u2019ll see Delta expand its network in Tampa, or if the carrier is happy with its current growth. Right now, <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/delta-tampa-amsterdam-flights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delta offers flights to Amsterdam (AMS)<\/a>, plus joint venture partner <a href=\"https:\/\/onemileatatime.com\/news\/virgin-atlantic-tampa-flights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virgin Atlantic flies to London (LHR)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"746\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Delta-757-Maui.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-245037\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Delta-757-Maui.jpeg?width=360&amp;auto_optimize=low&amp;quality=75 360w, https:\/\/cdn.onemileatatime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Delta-757-Maui.jpeg?width=1200&amp;auto_optimize=low&amp;quality=75 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Delta has been named as the first tenant of Airside D<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bottom-line\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bottom_line\"\/>Bottom line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>In 2028, Tampa Airport will be getting its first new concourse in 20 years, with the opening of Airside D.
