Content warning: introspection, parenthood, \u201cFloating Butt\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

When Benjamin (our first child) was born, my life as an individual was unraveled.<\/p>\n

With every bellow from the newborn\u2019s lungs, I could feel my personal agency slipping away from me.<\/p>\n

From that magical moment onwards, I\u2019ve been gripped by the polarizing emotions of parenthood.<\/p>\n

At any given time, I\u2019m galvanized by fear for the well-being of my children, or existentially deadlocked by the calamities of all the possible (terrible) futures for this planet, or (figuratively) high from the amazing content and purpose my children bring to my life.<\/p>\n

Any little thing, such as work-related stress or a messy room in the house, becomes magnified a thousandfold when filtered through a mind that\u2019s been caught in the rip currents of these emotions.<\/p>\n

Balance just doesn\u2019t come easily anymore. I need to focus so much effort on pushing this emotional turmoil to the background that it\u2019s sometimes difficult to remember what \u201cnormalcy\u201d actually is.<\/p>\n

However, this summer I found it again.<\/p>\n

It was pouring rain, and I was sitting on the pier of my Happy Place (Lake P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne in Finland).<\/p>\n

My son was goofing around in the lake, and my daughter was laughing hysterically at his antics. My wife was motioning for us to move back indoors out of the rain (although we all know that swimming in the rain is the most sensible thing you can do because it won\u2019t matter if you get wet).<\/p>\n

Just as I was giggling at my son\u2019s latest rendition of \u201cFloating Butt\u201d (that\u2019s when you dive in the water and then rise to the surface so that only your naked bottom emerges), something clicked in my mind and turned into a transformational thing.<\/p>\n

I realized that it\u2019s these powerful emotions themselves that give me a handle on the very things that cause the emotions in the first place. It\u2019s circular and recursive, yes, but I just can\u2019t explain it in other terms.<\/p>\n

The incredible highs and devastating lows of parenthood emotions are energy sources<\/em>. Having such amplifiers for even the smallest, most mundane things in life is an amazing asset to have.<\/p>\n

I never realized this! I might be slow on the uptake when it comes to fundamental personal truths, but this was foundational stuff for me.<\/p>\n

At that moment, on that pier, I was incredibly happy and as much in the moment<\/em> as I had ever been.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t fix<\/em> anything \u2013\u00a0nothing about the future became less uncertain; none of my fears for my family\u2019s well-being was reduced.<\/p>\n

But I felt normal<\/em>. I felt like this version of \u201cSimo\u201d that\u2019s part and parcel of our family unit is the best possible version of me.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the point?<\/h2>\n

It doesn\u2019t have to be parenthood \u2013\u00a0everybody has an energy source they can use to magnify the mundane or to suppress it when warranted.<\/p>\n

My work ethic, my fear for our planet\u2019s future, my excitement about our children learning new skills, my love for our family \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s all because of this energy source. It\u2019s all because the \u201cSimo\u201d that used to be an \u201cI\u201d and a \u201cme\u201d is now folded into a family unit, comfortably as a \u201cwe\u201d and \u201cus\u201d.<\/p>\n

For me, it took a rainy day at P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne, a dose of Floating Butt, and a serenity that can only come when you stop yourself in the middle of a moment to appreciate what you have.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
