Composed on a computer running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ableton.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ableton<\/a>, there\u2019s a warm ethereal feel and a sense of wonder to the tunes. Despite the album title <em>Box Of Darkness<\/em> which might initially suggest horror, there\u2019s much more going on across the eight-song collection. <\/p>\n<p><center><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3930669827\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/optikmuzak.bandcamp.com\/album\/box-of-darkness\">Box of Darkness by Glass Machine<\/a><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Piano-like sounds are favored here, with the opener \u201cHundreds Of Extra Hours\u201d and \u201cAstral Field Guide\u201d resembling the sounds of a music box, but with the greater fidelity afforded by synthesis. \u00a0As Prupis told me in an interview conducted via email, \u201cAcoustic piano to me has this really intoxicating quality to its sound and presence, which I think comes from both the tactile elements like chord layering, but also from just how evocative and rhythmic and immersive it is experientially\u2026. If you listen to some of the piano in Blood Orange\u2019s music and Devont\u00e9 Hynes\u2019 film scores, or Park Hye Jin\u2019s track \u201cCall Me,\u201d or Aphex Twin\u2019s piano-centric pieces, or <a href=\"https:\/\/philipglass.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Philip Glass<\/a> who I partially named myself after, a lot of their work is really emblematic of that feeling to me.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularculturebeat.com\/2024\/01\/12\/box-of-darkness-the-mystical-sounds-of-glass-machine-qa-with-nadia-prupis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">(My complete interview with Nadia is at Popular Culture Beat.)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The third track \u201cGlitch Mirror\u201d does lean into the darkness a little bit more, with some more sequenced or random piano sounds. \u201cFunny How It Goes\u201d takes some unusual melodic turns, where major and minor melt into one, not in the sentimental way of pop songs. \u201cA Trip To The Moon\u201d is whimsical and ethereal with some strange world beat percussion but altered in novel ways, as well as some glitches.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3930669827\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=584835455\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/optikmuzak.bandcamp.com\/album\/box-of-darkness\">Box of Darkness by Glass Machine<\/a><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>\u201cChaos Garden\u201d uses some random arpeggiation and some glitch percussion, like a new age meditation with some anxiety leaking in. \u201cEight Of Cups\u201d features string synths and a gentle pulsing drum track, reminded me somewhat of Peter Gabriel\u2019s ambient-flavored songs. \u00a0\u201cNeptune\u201d is a majestic little piano-based piece that has a slight march like rhythm and washes of seemingly acoustic piano reverb.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3930669827\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=2264618042\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/optikmuzak.bandcamp.com\/album\/box-of-darkness\">Box of Darkness by Glass Machine<\/a><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>In addition to Peter Gabriel, I also hear the influence, or appearance of an influence of the ambient music of Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Harold Budd, and Brian Eno. The sonic palette for <em>Box Of Darkness<\/em>, which was composed in Abelton, is completely unique and special. Prupis has taken great care to select and craft sounds that haven\u2019t really been heard before.
