In February 1934 the city\u2019s truck drivers and coal yard\u00a0workers organized and struck their industry, winning union recognition in a week. Their success inspired\u00a0other truckers and warehouse workers to organize and strike twice, in the spring and summer of 1934, facing\u00a0down the power of police and private \u201cdeputies.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Not only\u00a0did 10,000 Minneapolis employees win\u00a0union recognition,\u00a0but\u00a0they\u00a0also inspired\u00a0other workers to unionize in the Upper Midwest and across the country, and their strikes\u00a0helped prompt Congress to pass the National Labor Relations Act in 1935.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13443\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13443\" style=\"width: 795px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13443\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-run.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"795\" height=\"894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-run.jpg 795w, https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-run-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-run-768x864.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 795px) 100vw, 795px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Battle of Deputies Run, Minneapolis 1934<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13444\" style=\"width: 1483px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-runwm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1483\" height=\"976\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-runwm.jpg 1483w, https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-runwm-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-runwm-1024x674.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lawcha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/battle-deputies-runwm-768x505.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1483px) 100vw, 1483px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Women engaged in the Battle of Deputies Run, 1934, Minneapolis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Over the ensuing\u00a090 years local labor activists and scholars in the Twin Cities have celebrated the strikes\u2019 anniversary\u00a0once a decade, honoring its participants\u00a0and connecting ongoing contemporary labor conflicts with this history.\u00a0\u00a02014 was the first occasion when no strikers were still alive,\u00a0and the \u201cRemember 1934\u201d Committee\u00a0(made up of labor activists from a variety of local unions)\u00a0began identifying and involving strikers\u2019 descendants, organizing\u00a0a group of more than 130.\u00a0This led to the idea of conducting oral history\u00a0interviews with descendants about the stories they had been told by their parents and grandparents and\u00a0the ways these experiences\u00a0had shaped their own life choices.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/workdaymagazine.org\/the-90th-anniversary-of-the-1934-truckers-strike-honors-minneapolis-militant-labor-history-video\/\">One terrific video has been completed<\/a> and can be viewed with the fuller story.\u00a0 We also reached middle and high school teachers and students, generating a number of National History Day projects, two of which made it to the national competition. Our annual picnic, at Minnehaha Falls, took on added significance in July 2024 \u00a0when Minneapolis Parks and Recreation workers, members of Laborers International Union Local 363, struck only weeks before the public gathering.\u00a0 They were the stars of the program, and they were joined on stage by activists from the Minnesota Nurses Association, the University of Minnesota Graduate Employees Union (UE), a Communications Workers local, and more.
