visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cPortfolio Updates for 2025\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/portfolio-updates-for-2025\/embed\/#?secret=boVrCum0uK#?secret=Uk1xYkKqmv\" data-secret=\"Uk1xYkKqmv\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Weekend Reading \u2013 Do you need bonds in retirement?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>It\u2019s a great question<\/em> and something I get often.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, for what I\/we are planning for, my answer is \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For others, it could be helpful.<\/p>\n<p><em>I will explain.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At any age, in any portfolio, bonds have traditionally played a highly useful role in portfolios: limiting downside through interest payments and <em>often<\/em> moving in the opposite direction of stocks.\u00a0You may recall that bond prices have an inverse relationship to interest rates as well:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>when interest rates go up, the prices of bonds go down.<\/li>\n<li>when interest rates go down, prices go up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30757 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Bonds-in-your-retirement-portfolio-RBC.png\" alt=\"Bonds in your retirement portfolio - RBC\" width=\"813\" height=\"400\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30757 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Bonds-in-your-retirement-portfolio-RBC.png\" alt=\"Bonds in your retirement portfolio - RBC\" width=\"813\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Bonds-in-your-retirement-portfolio-RBC.png 813w, https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Bonds-in-your-retirement-portfolio-RBC-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Bonds-in-your-retirement-portfolio-RBC-600x295.png 600w, https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Bonds-in-your-retirement-portfolio-RBC-768x378.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 813px) 100vw, 813px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>With thanks\/attribution, source: RBC.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Beyond some income\/interest payments, bonds can <span style=\"color: #23292b;\">help <\/span>balance investment risk based on this inverse relationship.<\/p>\n<p>These would be my key reasons to own bonds, <em>if I did:<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\" data-content-ads-inserted=\"true\">\n<ol data-slot-rendered-content=\"true\">\n<li><strong>Bonds can help your investing behaviour \u2013 <\/strong>riding out stock market volatility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bonds can be used to rebalance your portfolio \u2013 <\/strong>keep your portfolio aligned to your investing risk tolerance (i.e., you sell stocks or bonds to get back to your desired asset mix of 60\/40 or 70\/30).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bonds can be used for spending purposes \u2013 <\/strong>where some fixed income is needed for near-term spending without selling stocks, and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bonds can help protect against deflation \u2013 <\/strong>since inflation is a killer for bonds long-term.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>(Disclosure: I do not own bonds or bond ETFs at the time of this post and have not for many, many years. Own Dividend Stocks.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a relatively patient investor (although I have sold some stocks over the years), I see the real-time benefits of dividend yield from my collection of stocks. This means an investor who exercises patience with a diversified basket of stocks could not only enjoy a higher passive income stream, but also participate in growth from these stocks, AND, said stocks may be taxed much more favourably given the benefits of the dividend tax credit (if you own Canadian stocks in a taxable investing account like I do).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"22TRhMI9ky\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/december-2024-dividend-income-update\/\">December 2024 Dividend Income Update<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cDecember 2024 Dividend Income Update\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/december-2024-dividend-income-update\/embed\/#?secret=XDxdVMrbNi#?secret=22TRhMI9ky\" data-secret=\"22TRhMI9ky\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A big reason why we own what we own (many selected Canadian stocks picked low-cost ETF XIU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/have-you-considered-unbundling-your-canadian-etf-for-income\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(I have unbundled my dividend stock portfolio for many years now)<\/a>) is: <strong>most of these stocks are bond-proxies for us with some growth upside too.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"QtucRok7zM\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/have-you-considered-unbundling-your-canadian-etf-for-income\/\">Have you considered unbundling your Canadian ETF for income?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cHave you considered unbundling your Canadian ETF for income?\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/have-you-considered-unbundling-your-canadian-etf-for-income\/embed\/#?secret=cRUSaTH1Zs#?secret=QtucRok7zM\" data-secret=\"QtucRok7zM\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Own Cash-Alternative ETFs \/ Money Market Funds \/ Higher Interest Savings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-3zmxr0\"><strong>Cash-Alternative ETFs<\/strong> are investment solutions that aim to provide returns similar to short-term fixed income securities, like money-market funds, through a diversified portfolio of high-quality, short duration instruments. They are low-risk investments that offer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"css-3zmxr0\">Liquidity: easy to buy and sell; ETF transactions settle within a few trading days.<\/li>\n<li>Capital preservation: the value of the ETF does not change much.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Consistent cashflow\/monthly income.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may recall this post below. At the time of this post, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/are-cash-alternative-etfs-right-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I still own some Cash-Alternative ETFs inside my LIRA<\/a> actually. I do that to support future LIRA to LIF drawdowns in the coming years. In doing so, I won\u2019t need to sell any equities inside my LIF for a few years.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"rojUwJx9Wt\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/are-cash-alternative-etfs-right-for-you\/\">Are Cash-Alternative ETFs Right for You?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cAre Cash-Alternative ETFs Right for You?\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/are-cash-alternative-etfs-right-for-you\/embed\/#?secret=som9JzV21J#?secret=rojUwJx9Wt\" data-secret=\"rojUwJx9Wt\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>A money market fund (MMF)<\/strong> is a type of mutual fund that invests in cash, cash equivalents and short-term debt securities. I like to think of MMFs as a cash investment tool \u2013 it also provides liquidity, portfolio diversification, capital preservation and steady income. For a low management expense ratio, investors using MMFs can earn a modest rate of interest income and at the same time to preserve capital and maintain liquidity by investing primarily in high-quality money market securities, generally maturing in not more than one year.<\/p>\n<p>I actually keep some low-cost MMFs inside my RRSP at the time of this post. These MMFs are part of my <strong>RRSP Bucket Approach<\/strong> that I am ready to deploy in the coming years \u2013 MMFs will be sold for cash withdrawals vs. idle cash just sitting around, earning nothing, before I make our RRSP withdrawals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/RRSP-Bucket-Approach-My-Own-Advisor-March-2024.png\" alt=\"RRSP Bucket Approach - My Own Advisor March 2024\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/RRSP-Bucket-Approach-My-Own-Advisor-March-2024.png\" alt=\"RRSP Bucket Approach - My Own Advisor March 2024\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I will dive deepeer into all our RRSP-related withdrawals in the coming years, in future posts!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Higher Interest Savings Accounts<\/strong> (HISAs) are just that. They <span style=\"color: #23292b;\" data-huuid=\"8778100204601510687\">pay a slightly higher interest rate than a traditional savings account. The benefits of a HISA as I see it:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"WaaZC\">\n<div class=\"RJPOee EIJn2\">\n<ul data-hveid=\"CBgQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwjB06X2tf-KAxU9EFkFHYL4M68Qm_YKegQIGBAB\">\n<li>Risk-free:\u00a0HISA\u2019s are federally insured up to $100,000 if the bank is insured by the\u00a0<a class=\"uVhVib\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdic.ca\/\">Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC).<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Good for near-term saving for upcoming spending.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Good for emergencies\/keep your emergency fund in a HISA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I\/we use HISAs and we keep a fair bit of money in them, for that near-term spending within the year (pay for property taxes, travel) and we have a stand-alone emergency fund too. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/why-we-want-a-10000-emergency-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we\u2019ve kept our emergency fund at this level for well over 10-years now.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In summary, the decision to keep bonds in your retirement portfolio (or in my case, my semi-retirement portfolio) can vary and I believe it can boil down to your tolerance for investing risk but just as importantly the dependable income sources you will have in any semi-retirement or retirement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you want to learn more about how I\u2019ve constructed things to date and what might benefit you too, please check out my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/your-free-playbook-to-retirement-income-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FREE Playbook to Retirement Income Planning.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>No course fee required. \ud83d\ude42\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>More Weekend Reading!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #555555; font-size: 15px; font-weight: normal;\">Tawcan was busy re-evaluating <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: normal;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tawcan.com\/how-much-do-we-need-to-reach-financial-independence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how much he might need to reach financial independence.<\/a><span style=\"color: #555555; font-size: 15px; font-weight: normal;\"> He figures he wants this much invested:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cWe will need between $1.25M to $2.34M to reach financial independence if we plan to generate between $10k to $20k in part time income each year. If we take the midpoint again it\u2019d be $1.795M.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If we take a rough average between $1.795M and $2.21M, we\u2019d get $2M.
