The majority of the victims were Jews, though tens of thousands of Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war and victims of other nationalities also perished.<\/p>\n<p>The killing at Auschwitz stopped on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/the-liberation-of-auschwitzwhere-more-than-one-million-jews-were-killedtook-place-on-this-day-in-1945-180985840\/\">January 27, 1945<\/a>, the day the Red Army liberated the concentration camp. When Soviet soldiers arrived, they found roughly 7,000 emaciated prisoners, piles of human corpses, gas chambers, crematories and other evidence of the horrors that had taken place there.<\/p>\n<p>Auschwitz, a complex of three main camps and more than 40 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auschwitz.org\/en\/history\/auschwitz-sub-camps\/\">subcamps<\/a>, was the site of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/auschwitz\/40-45\/beginnings\/\">largest mass murder<\/a> in human history. After the war, it became an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/what-happened-after-liberation-auschwitz-180974051\/\">enduring symbol<\/a> of the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Auschwitz survivors and world leaders gathered to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the camp\u2019s liberation. They met in the Polish town of Oswiecim at the site of the former death camp, which is now a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.auschwitz.org\/en\/\">museum and memorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>Auschwitz survivors commemorate 80th anniversary of its liberation &#8211; watch live<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/qC2J-5eDkfI\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"qC2J-5eDkfI\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Britain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/is-king-charles-iiis-first-official-portrait-too-red-180984364\/\">Charles III<\/a>, Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Poland\u2019s President Andrzej Duda and French President Emmanuel Macron attended the ceremony, as did Germany\u2019s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The United States also\u00a0sent a delegation, per the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/27\/world\/europe\/auschwitz-liberation-80th-anniversary.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Andrew Higgins.<\/p>\n<p>Auschwitz survivors also participated in the commemoration. Many are now in their 90s, and experts expect this to be one of the last times they convene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn five years, there will be very few left,\u201d Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and chairman of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation, tells the <em>Times<\/em>. \u201cAnd those who are still alive won\u2019t have the energy to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The number of survivors grows smaller each year. Some 200 attended the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz\u2019s liberation in 2020. This year, only 56 survivors made it, reports the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/auschwitz-birkenau-80th-anniversary-bd9004cf75e6799394e6f74d14b4a742\">Associated Press<\/a>\u2019 Vanessa Gera.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/l5GoOskUodRJ6pOeZ-aSZLagIWg=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(4096x2731:4097x2732)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/18\/04\/18042580-ac74-49e1-ba1c-ffe5424bfd20\/gettyimages-2196150866.jpg\" alt=\"Two people touching their hands to a wall\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Auschwitz survivors placed candles in front of the camp&#8217;s Wall of Death.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Sean Gallup \/ Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Returning to Auschwitz \u201cdoesn\u2019t do any good for your heart, for your mind, for anything,\u201d said Jona Laks, 94, who was brought to the camp when she was about 12 years old, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/27\/europe\/world-leaders-auschwitz-commemorations-holocaust-intl\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>\u2019s Sophie Tanno and Lauren Kent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s necessary,\u201d Laks added. \u201cIt\u2019s necessary for the world to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attendees placed candles in front of the camp\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.auschwitz.org\/en\/visiting\/permanent-exhibition\/death-wall\/\">Wall of Death<\/a> before gathering under a large tent erected for the occasion. They sat facing an empty train car the Nazis had used to transport victims to Auschwitz.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony included music by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/holocaustmusic.ort.org\/places\/theresienstadt\/simon-james\/\">James Simon<\/a>, a German-Jewish composer who was murdered at the camp, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/holocaustmusic.ort.org\/places\/camps\/death-camps\/auschwitz\/kropinskijozef\/\">J\u00f3zef Kropi\u0144ski<\/a>, a Polish musician who was sent to Auschwitz but ultimately survived. Many attendees wore blue and white scarves, \u201ca nod to the clothes worn by the prisoners in the camp,\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/c5yep0l5545t?page=2\">BBC News<\/a>\u2019 Jamie Whitehead, Matt Spivey and Paul Kirby report. Most of the speakers were survivors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world has become toxic,\u201d Tova Friedman, who was brought to Auschwitz when she was 5 years old, told the AP before the ceremony. \u201cI realize that we\u2019re in a crisis again, that there is so much hatred around, so much distrust, that if we don\u2019t stop, it may get worse and worse. There may be another terrible destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leon Weintraub, a 99-year-old Auschwitz survivor, also warned against the \u201cenemies of democracy.\u201d During the ceremony, he encouraged \u201cyoung people to be sensitive to all expressions of intolerance and resentment towards those who are different,\u201d as reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/jan\/27\/auschwitz-survivors-memorial-holocaust-ceremony-europe-latest-live-news\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Jakub Krupa.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Monday, the former home of Auschwitz\u2019s Nazi leader,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Rudolf-Franz-Hoss\">Rudolf H\u00f6ss<\/a>, opened to the public. The house, which was featured in the film\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/the-real-history-behind-the-zone-of-interest-and-rudolf-hoss-180983531\/\"><em>The Zone of Interest<\/em><\/a>, is adjacent to the former death camp. It was purchased by the Counter Extremism Project, an international organization that aims to fight extremism and antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis house has been closed off for 80 years to humanity,\u201d said Mark Wallace, the group\u2019s CEO and the former American ambassador to the United Nations, to the London\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/europe\/article\/inside-the-auschwitz-bosss-house-opened-up-for-first-time-in-80-years-ddwhhkl5g\"><em>Times<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Magnus Linklater. \u201cRemember the poor souls who were marched to Gas Chamber No. 1 and Crematory No. 1, a football pitch away.
