Advertisers have ridden the ups and downs of this transference of influence for decades. Now, however, the biggest demographic in history is starting to exert its spending power, and companies need to be ready to cater to the quirky whims and desires of Gen Z if they want to stay profitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Torch Has Been Passed\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his 1961 inaugural address, John Kennedy told the world that \u201cthe torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans.\u201d Kennedy had a good reason for saying this: he was the first president to be born in the 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century\u2014in 1917. When Kennedy spoke of a \u201cnew generation,\u201d he was referring to himself and, to drive the point home, the word \u201cgeneration\u201d appears a total of four times in that speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kennedy probably never considered that, to the baby boomers\u2014a demographic poised to explode upon American culture just three years later\u2014he wasn\u2019t part of any \u201cnew generation\u201d; he was the older generation against which they would, by the end of the decade, rebel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the way it\u2019s supposed to be\u2014one generation suddenly loses its influence and is replaced by the next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advertisers, marketers, and successful companies have been riding generational waves for seventy years. First, it was the post-war Silent Generation of the 1940s and 50s, who were replaced by the Baby Boomers in the 1960s and 70s, who were replaced by Generation X in the 1980s and 90s, who were replaced by Generation Y\u2014Millennials\u2014in the 2000s and 2010s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now, as we begin 2021, the torch has once again been passed to a new generation: Generation Z. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careerplanner.com\/Career-Articles\/Generations.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generation Z<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a demographic that was born, most experts agree, between 1995 and 2012.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby Boomers, with 74-million constituents, were once the biggest generation in history; however, as the number of Baby Boomers declined to 72 million in 2019, Millennials overtook them with 73-million constituents. Those numbers are impressive until they\u2019re compared with the population of Generation Z, which has more than 90-million cohorts, as shown in this graph from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/797321\/us-population-by-generation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statista<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcfaddengavender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Gen-Z-Graph.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"776\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcfaddengavender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Gen-Z-Graph.jpg 776w, https:\/\/www.mcfaddengavender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Gen-Z-Graph-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mcfaddengavender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Gen-Z-Graph-768x498.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 776px) 100vw, 776px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even those who have previously weathered a generational upheaval in marketing strategies will not have a precedent for the demographic tsunami that\u2019s already begun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who think they merely have to tweak the strategy used to market to millennials should prepare for disappointment. The two demographics are not at all alike. The differences between Millennials and Gen Z\u2014from role models and attitudes to attention span\u2014are significant, as shown in an interesting infographic from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visioncritical.com\/blog\/gen-z-versus-millennials-infographics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision Critical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, as you may have noticed, a significant number of Gen Z are beginning to take over the workplace, which means they\u2019ve got money to spend. Estimates are that Gen Z is already spending an average <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jefffromm\/2018\/01\/10\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-financial-impact-of-gen-z-influence\/#4d2ac36856fc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$143 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per year and they command nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/99firms.com\/blog\/generation-z-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of all consumer spending<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that\u2019s with only half of Gen Z being old enough to work. Even more startling is that the trailing edge of this generation will be just nine-years old in 2021, so look for their influence to steadily increase for the next two decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than its enormous size, here\u2019s what makes Gen Z so different: They have never known the world without the internet; they had smartphones from an early age; they\u2019re the first generation in almost a century that spent their formative years in a time of economic recession; they perceive information visually; growing up in a multichannel world, they have what\u2019s generally considered to be the shortest attention span in history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s usually unfair and often unkind to make generalizations about any group, but are there characteristics that many Gen Zers share that would give clues to the best marketing strategies to use? Here\u2019s what we found:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The attention-span thing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Every time there\u2019s an article on Gen Z, their eight-second attention span gets mentioned like it\u2019s a bad thing. But, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.readyeducation.com\/blog\/three-gen-z-myths-debunked\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, what everyone is calling an attention deficit is really an extremely effective filter. It\u2019s a mechanism that encourages well-considered and succinct communication and that\u2019s a good thing. You\u2019ve got eight seconds to state your case or make your point and if it takes longer than that, you\u2019re wasting a Gen Zer\u2019s time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>In-store shopping<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 For years, the trend has been away from brick-and-mortar stores, but Gen Z is reversing that. A poll of 1,000 18-25-year old Gen Zers showed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.retailcustomerexperience.com\/news\/survey-most-gen-z-shoppers-using-buy-online-pickup-in-store\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% had visited a mall<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within the last week<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that 90% of those made a purchase. The poll also showed that 58% have used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.retailcustomerexperience.com\/news\/survey-most-gen-z-shoppers-using-buy-online-pickup-in-store\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy Online, Pickup In-Store<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BOPIS) within the last month. Because they place a high value on personal contact and immediate gratification, Gen Z is far more likely to shop at brick-and-mortar stores than their Millennial predecessors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>No brand loyalty <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Having grown up in a recession, Gen Z is a thrifty bunch. Rather than look for name brands, they base their purchases on a product\u2019s attributes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/gen-z-shopping-habits-kill-brands-2019-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> polled 1,884 Gen Zers, age 13-21, and found that 60% based their purchases solely on price, which includes buying from second-hand shops or from clothing rental stores like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aestyledrop.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Eagle Style Drop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>They like it real<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bazaarvoice.com\/blog\/brands-to-know-about-generation-z\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bazaarvoice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that 63% of Gen Z want marketing from \u201creal\u201d people. They\u2019ve got their ad-blockers running, and celebrities don\u2019t impress them, so if you want to sell them something, make sure the person and the message are authentic. If it looks like you\u2019re pandering, you\u2019ll be ignored.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>They use Snapchat and Instagram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Facebook may have been the social media of choice for Millennials, but Gen Zers like their social media to be visual, temporary and anonymous.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>They value their privacy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Perhaps it comes from watching previous generations trade personal information to social media companies or for online services; perhaps it comes from the growing awareness that personal information is being sold or traded to third parties who may have sinister agendas. Whatever the reason, Gen Zers value their privacy more than Millennials or Gen Xers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/businessjournal\/192401\/data-security-not-big-concern-millennials.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2016 Gallup poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that Millennials were aware their online privacy could be compromised but believed that nothing bad would happen to them. Since that poll was released in 2016, over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_data_breaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four billion records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been hacked from companies\u00a0 and organizations such as the U.S. Postal Service, Reddit, Under Armour, Orbitz, Singapore\u2019s Ministry of Health, Marriott International, Google Plus, Facebook, Equifax, and Capital One. Gen Z has learned from these security breaches\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.documentcloud.org\/documents\/4165473\/n-gen-White-Paper-Gen-Z.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">88% agree with the statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cProtecting my privacy is very important to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>They don\u2019t want to work for you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 A report from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineschoolscenter.com\/skipping-school\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online Schools Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that 61% of high school students and 43% of college students plan on being entrepreneurs rather than employees. In a poll of students in grades 5-12, 40% plan to start their own business, 29% want to invent something that changes the world, 24% are already learning how to start and run a business, and 9% already own a business.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does one develop a new marketing strategy that targets Generation Z?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they\u2019re such a diverse group, there won\u2019t be any hard-and-fast rules; however, we found a few tips from Forbes\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesbusinessdevelopmentcouncil\/2018\/02\/22\/13-strategies-for-marketing-to-generation-z\/#7503810931c3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Development Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that may help win the hearts and minds of Gen Z:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Use Multi-Channels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 You\u2019ll find Gen Z on social media and on their phones, so start there with a multi-channel marketing campaign using a variety of formats such as video, pic posts, stories, etc. Use direct, individualized messaging and content.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Provide user-generated content (UGC) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 They may not believe ads, but they trust regular people. After years of reading thousands of Amazon reviews, Gen Zers depend on user reviews and providing lots of UGCs may be what closes the deal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Sell results<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 This generation wants to know what\u2019s in it for them so don\u2019t sell your product; sell what your product can do to improve their lives. Sell the success they\u2019ll achieve by using your product. You want to be viewed as an expert who understands the needs of Gen Zers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Entertain them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Lisa Box, from WP Engine, says having spent their entire lives online, Gen Z is used to being entertained. \u201cTo win with Gen Z, marketers have to evolve from informing to delighting, from celebrity to authenticity, and from generic to predictive.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Show them a video<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 They love YouTube and are accustomed to watching short videos on their phones. Go to their comfort zone and play to their interests. Use short videos throughout the sales process.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Appeal to their social consciousness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Gen Z is less interested in your product and more interested in how you treat employees, customers, and the planet. Highlight your company\u2019s values and the social good you provide. Tailor your messaging on each social media platform and provide quick, meaningful information to capture their attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generation Z is an enormous, multi-faceted demographic and marketing to them\u2014while necessary\u2014will be complicated, and next month we\u2019ll look at the single best place to encounter Gen Z online.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, however, you don\u2019t have the time or resources for a paradigm shift in your marketing strategy, we at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfaddengavender.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McFadden\/Gavender<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help.
