She\u2019d been to Birmingham before, and thought she\u2019d therefore \u2018been to the Black Country\u2019, but by the time she left for home, she knew for certain that the two places are not the same. It all started when we decided to go for a drink, and, walking down the road, someone called over to us. What they said was, \u2018How am ya, m\u2019wenches?\u2019 My friend, only making out the word \u2018wenches\u2019 visibly fizzled with offence. \u2018Do you know them?\u2019 she asked. \u2018No,\u2019 I said. There was a moment of slight discomfort. I had to explain that here in the Black Country, \u2018wenches\u2019 is a term of endearment, and strangers <em>will<\/em>\u00a0ask after your well-being, often very loudly. What did she learn during her stay? That the Black Country is unsettling, weird, a bit dark round the edges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-mce-fragment=\"1\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Of course, I knew this all along. I am, after all, a Black Country wench, born and bred. I know that It\u2019s a place of contradictions: it has its own set of dialects, its own specific culture. You can\u2019t define it geographically, it\u2019s more about the landscape, really. It\u2019s neither entirely urban or rural, in fact, it\u2019s considered borderless. Working farms sit next to housing estates, canals are plentiful and highly significant, historically and culturally. On patches of land near industrial estates and high-rise blocks, you\u2019ll find horses. They seem owner-less, and we used to ride them about the place when I was a kid. But it\u2019s a place that breeds creativity: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elihu_Burritt\" target=\"_blank\">Elihu Burritt<\/a> called it \u2018Black by day and red by night\u2019 in 1862; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/2014-05-16\/queen-victoria-diary-reveals-trip-to-desolate-midlands\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Victoria<\/a> thought the place so revolting, she couldn\u2019t bear to look as she passed through, and in the early 1900s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wolverhamptonart.org.uk\/ebb\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edwin Butler Bayliss<\/a>\u2019 paintings conveyed the smoke and grime of the place. More recently, photographers like the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cpr3320rxevo\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Loach<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2019\/feb\/23\/richard-billingham-ray-and-liz-interview\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Billingham<\/a> have created projects of their life in the region. <a href=\"https:\/\/laurapannack.com\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Pannack<\/a>\u2019s photography (2019) focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/gallery\/2019\/jun\/12\/vapes-snakes-fireworks-the-cracker-laura-pannack-west-midlands-in-pictures\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018The Cracker\u2019, a scrubland in Tipton described as \u2018a kind of youth club without walls, or rules\u2019<\/a>\u00a0is a fascinating documentary style project that aptly sums up the essence of the Black Country.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-fragment=\"1\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\/>So let\u2019s talk about the \u2018essence\u2019 of Black Country: poets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lizberrypoetry.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Liz Berry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackcountryradio.co.uk\/our-people\/billy-spakemon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Billy Spakemon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/rmfrancis.weebly.com\" target=\"_blank\">R. M. Francis<\/a> focus on their love of the place. And novelists, from Francis Brett Young in early 1900s, to Anthony Cartwright now, have cultivated a real \u2018sensation of place\u2019 in their writing. But the late Joel Lane\u2019s novel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influxpress.com\/from-blue-to-black\" target=\"_blank\"><em data-mce-fragment=\"1\">From Blue to Black<\/em><\/a> (2000) made me realise the impact of drawing out the weirdness, the eeriness \u2013 the vital sense of contradiction of the Black Country \u2013 in writing. This, and my own lived experience of the place, and of the fictive possibilities it offers continues to inspire and challenge me as a writer. I say \u2018challenge\u2019 because what is now referred to as \u2018Black Country noir\u2019 is an unusual mix of crime, thriller, Gothic, dark, weird fiction. It\u2019s a genre that reflects the complexity and contradictory nature of the place itself, the essence of it. And look, let me be clear, writing it is pure joy \u2013 the process of writing it, I mean \u2013 for me. I\u2019ve written four Black Country noir novels now, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saltpublishing.com\/products\/lie-of-the-land-9781784633318\" target=\"_blank\"><em data-mce-fragment=\"1\">Lie of the Land<\/em><\/a> is the latest one. There\u2019s a sense of the gothic about it, some elements of crime and thriller. It\u2019s weird, (unsurprisingly) dark round the edges with several moments of slight discomfort. Maybe, if you read it, you\u2019ll find it unsettling. Good.
