{"id":50551,"date":"2025-01-27T08:59:40","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T08:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/aquarium\/monday-archives-are-wrasses-the-smartest-fish\/"},"modified":"2025-01-27T08:59:40","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T08:59:40","slug":"monday-archives-are-wrasses-the-smartest-fish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=50551","title":{"rendered":"Monday Archives: Are wrasses the smartest\u00a0fish?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\">\n<p class=\"infuse\">Earlier this year, scientists documented Blackspot Tuskfish (<i>Choerodon schoenleinii<\/i>) on the Great Barrier Reef <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"tool-using-tuskfish-prefer-rocks-to-craftsman\">using rocks to crack open cockle shells<\/a>.\u00a0 Tool usage is often denoted as a sign of intelligence.\u00a0 Now new research shows another wrasse understands how to exploit the natural behavior of other animals for their own benefit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"infuse\">Ornate wrasses (<i>Thalassoma pavo<\/i>) enjoy dining on the nutritious tubed feet of sea urchins.\u00a0 However, when urchins sense predators around, they will hunker down into the substrate, making it very difficult for wrasses to reach the tasty meal.<\/p>\n<p>Enter: <i>Marthasterias glacialis<\/i>, a starfish. \u00a0 This starfish also enjoys feasting on sea urchins, but aren\u2019t fast enough to catch them consistently.\u00a0 Researchers at Tuscia University (Italy) have discovered the two species help each other in this common pursuit.\u00a0 Ornate wrasses force sea urchins to anchor themselves in self defense, giving time for starfish to catch up and attack the stationary sea urchin.\u00a0 When the starfish uproots the sea urchin, the wrasse swoops in and snipes a few tubed feet.<\/p>\n<p>The research was presented at this year\u2019s Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour in St Andrews, a summer conference aimed to promote an understanding of animal intelligence.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"discreet\">[via <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg21128284.300-wrasse-and-starfish-gang-up-on-sea-urchins.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&amp;nsref=online-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Scientist<\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Originally published on September 5, 2011<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, scientists documented Blackspot Tuskfish (Choerodon schoenleinii) on the Great Barrier Reef using rocks to crack open cockle shells.\u00a0 Tool usage is often denoted as a sign of intelligence.\u00a0 Now new research shows another wrasse understands how to exploit the natural behavior of other animals for their own benefit.
