The 3-year-old bears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/smithsonian-national-zoo-giant-panda-make-public-debut-january-24-180985263\/\">arrived in Washington<\/a> this past October, undergoing a quarantine period before making their debut.<\/p>\n<p>Bao Li, a male whose name translates to \u201cactive and vital power,\u201d and Qing Bao, a female whose name means \u201cgreen\u201d and \u201ctreasure,\u201d \u201chave already won the hearts of our staff and volunteers,\u201d said NZCBI\u2019s director, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/about\/staff\/brandie-smith\">Brandie Smith<\/a>, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/news\/giant-pandas-will-make-their-public-debut-jan-24-smithsonians-national-zoo-and-conservation\">statement<\/a> earlier this month, \u201cand we are excited to welcome panda fans back to the Zoo\u2014the only place in the nation where you can see giant pandas for free\u2014and celebrate the newest chapter of our giant panda breeding and conservation program.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/DSGC1XrlXiDl7vnB7O2Cg7unmR8=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(1000x671:1001x672)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/23\/4d\/234daa18-5db1-4418-897a-3defbf6caec2\/bao-li.jpg\" alt=\"Female giant panda Qing Bao in her habitat\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Female giant panda Qing Bao in her habitat<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Roshan Patel \/ Smithsonian&#8217;s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to an NZCBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/blogs\/national-zoo-conservation-biology-institute\/2025\/01\/14\/how-can-you-tell-the-national-zoos-giant-pandas-apart\/\">blog post<\/a>, keepers say Bao Li is \u201cplayful, curious and attention-seeking,\u201d while Qing Bao is more independent and spends much of her time hanging out in trees. When provided with a pile of ice shavings as enrichment, \u201cQing Bao didn\u2019t care about it, but Bao Li loved it,\u201d said keeper Mariel Lally in a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/blogs\/national-zoo-conservation-biology-institute\/2024\/11\/06\/how-keepers-at-smithsonians-national-zoo-help-giant-pandas-feel-at-home\/\">blog post<\/a>. \u201cHe stomped on it, rolled around in it and pushed his ball over to it. Everything is new to him, so he\u2019s having a lot of fun right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pair are the ninth and tenth pandas to call the nation\u2019s capital home, not counting cubs that died before being named or shortly after birth. Longtime NZCBI residents Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, along with their youngest son, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/news\/his-name-xiao-qi-ji\">Xiao Qi Ji<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/the-national-zoos-giant-pandas-bid-washington-dc-farewell-180983209\/\">moved to China<\/a> in November 2023, fulfilling an agreement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/our-union\/members\/iucn-members\/china-wildlife-conservation-association\">China Wildlife Conservation Association<\/a> (CWCA), which owns the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-mexico-diplomacy-pandas--f386f8b13bd7bb12c918239f38fcedda\">vast majority<\/a> of pandas held in captivity. The trio\u2019s departure left Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2023\/11\/08\/pandas-leaving-china-dc-zoo\/\">without pandas<\/a> for the first time in 23 years.<\/p>\n<p>Under NZCBI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/news\/two-new-giant-pandas-coming-smithsonians-national-zoo-and-conservation-biology-institute-china?_gl=1*n0cz75*_gcl_au*NTQ3NDg2MzUxLjE3MzA3NDE1MzQ.*_ga*NjA4MTY2NDM5LjE3MTgwMzgyMTY.*_ga_FZ22Y9JDR2*MTczNzEyNDQ3MC42NS4wLjE3MzcxMjQ0ODMuMC4wLjA.*_ga_2JEVMJZZBX*MTczNzEyNDQ3MC4yLjAuMTczNzEyNDQ4My4wLjAuMA..\">new agreement<\/a> with the CWCA, Qing Bao and Bao Li will remain in the United States for ten years, until April 2034, in exchange for an annual fee of $1 million. The pair are still too young to breed, as pandas only reach sexual maturity between ages 4 and 7. \u201cKind of picture them as like awkward teenagers right now,\u201d Lally told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/life\/animals\/giant-panda-debut-dc-national-zoo\/65-0cba50c2-9e4a-4389-85fc-0ebcf33f1b5b\">WUSA9<\/a>. \u201cWe still have about two years before we would probably even see signs that they\u2019re ready to start mating.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>National Treasure: The Giant Panda Steals Hearts (and Bamboo) at the National Zoo<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/AiZK4yDkHek\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"AiZK4yDkHek\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>If the bears produce offspring, their cubs will leave for China by age 4 to participate in a giant panda <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/news\/giant-panda-bei-bei-moving-china-end-year\">breeding program<\/a> aimed at increasing the species\u2019 population. Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/panda-conservation\">conservation programs<\/a> at NZCBI, in China and further afield, pandas\u2014once classified as <a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/discover\/knowledge_hub\/endangered_species\/giant_panda\/giant_pandas_no_longer_endangered\/\">endangered<\/a>\u2014are now only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/species\/giant-panda\">considered vulnerable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with <em>Smithsonian <\/em>magazine last May, when NZCBI announced the species\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/giant-pandas-are-coming-back-to-washington-dc-180984356\/\">imminent arrival<\/a> in Washington, Smith said she\u2019d initially thought that pandas wouldn\u2019t return for \u201ctwo, maybe three years.\u201d In 2023, amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/07\/business\/economy\/us-china-relationship-facts.html\">rising tensions<\/a> between the U.S. and China, the CWCA allowed multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgetown.edu\/news\/the-giant-pandas-have-left-the-national-zoo-whats-next-for-u-s-china-relations\/\">loan agreements<\/a> with partners in the West to lapse, prompting zoos in Washington, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/panda-yaya-china-memphis-zoo-diplomacy-washington-beijing-geopolitics-rcna81566\">Memphis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/dec\/01\/panda-diplomacy-exit-from-edinburgh-zoo-may-signal-end-of-era\">Edinburgh<\/a> to send their pandas back to China.<\/p>\n<p>The change in policy sparked fears that the era of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2023\/08\/26\/smithsonian-zoo-panda-birthday-china-tian-tian-xiao-qi-ji-mei-xiang\/\">panda diplomacy<\/a>,\u201d in which China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwa.edu.au\/news\/article\/2024\/june\/chinas-long-history-of-panda-diplomacy\">gifted or lent<\/a> the black-and-white bears to other countries to influence diplomatic relations, was coming to an end. Luckily for panda lovers, Chinese President Xi Jinping soon signaled his <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/xi-jinping-pandas-apec-94420197473c4152d6a2ce054c725873\">country\u2019s willingness<\/a> to continue lending the animals to the U.S. A breeding pair named <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.sandiegozoo.org\/2024\/04\/29\/the-best-is-yet-to-come\/\">Yun Chuan<\/a> and Xin Bao arrived at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegozoowildlifealliance.org\/PR\/panda-farewell\">San Diego Zoo<\/a> in June 2024, becoming the first giant pandas to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/two-pandas-arrive-at-the-san-diego-zoo-the-first-to-enter-the-us-in-21-years-180984636\/\">enter the U.S.<\/a> in 21 years.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>Jan. 6, 2025: Giant Pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao Play In The Snow<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/ebcCgSRobc4\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"ebcCgSRobc4\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that we have pandas here this quickly\u2014it\u2019ll be less than a year\u2014[is] a testament to the strong partnership and relationship that we have with our panda colleagues in China,\u201d Smith said in May.<\/p>\n<p>To prepare for Qing Bao and Bao Li\u2019s arrival, NZCBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/object\/b-roll-media-david-m-rubenstein-family-giant-panda-habitat-renovation%3Ayt_Q_j8HkX4qV8?destination=collection\/search%3Fpage%3D83%26edan_q%3D%252A%253A%252A%26edan_fq%255B0%255D%3Dtype%253A3d_package%2520OR%2520type%253Aead_collection%2520OR%2520type%253Aead_component%2520OR%2520type%253Aecr%2520OR%2520type%253Aedanmdm%2520OR%2520type%253Aevent%2520OR%2520type%253Alocation%2520OR%2520type%253Aobjectgroup%2520OR%2520type%253Asi-unit%26edan_fq%255B1%255D%3Donline_media_type%253A%2522Youtube%2520videos%2522%26edan_fq%255B2%255D%3Dtype%253A3d_package%2520OR%2520type%253Aead_collection%2520OR%2520type%253Aead_component%2520OR%2520type%253Aecr%2520OR%2520type%253Aedanmdm%2520OR%2520type%253Aevent%2520OR%2520type%253Alocation%2520OR%2520type%253Aobjectgroup%2520OR%2520type%253Asi-unit%26edan_fq%255B3%255D%3Dtype%253A3d_package%2520OR%2520type%253Aead_collection%2520OR%2520type%253Aead_component%2520OR%2520type%253Aecr%2520OR%2520type%253Aedanmdm%2520OR%2520type%253Aevent%2520OR%2520type%253Alocation%2520OR%2520type%253Aobjectgroup%2520OR%2520type%253Asi-unit\">renovated<\/a> its panda habitat, adding new outdoor fencing and platform structures for the animals to \u201cclimb on and lay on,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.si.edu\/display\/nThompsonL6242008\">Laurie Thompson<\/a>, assistant curator of giant pandas, told <em>Smithsonian <\/em>last May. Staff made more dramatic changes to the bears\u2019 indoor habitat, adding murals of mountainous landscapes, black locust timber climbing structures, new flooring and upgraded air conditioning. Safety and security were of paramount importance, Smith told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2024\/10\/14\/national-zoo-cams-pandas-habitat\/\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> this past October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe increased the height of the fence,\u201d she said. \u201cWe decreased the depth of some of the pools. \u2026 One of the biggest projects was a smoke evacuation system in the [panda] house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen, of course, we\u2019re going to get two young pandas here,\u201d she added. \u201cWe want to make it fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>#DCPandas: Giant Panda Qing Bao in Autumn<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/f9KVNw799aE\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"f9KVNw799aE\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>To help the pandas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL9S_88he0gqpXWrl5wS0urzNrXSM48VoF\">acclimate to their new home<\/a>, staff slowly introduced the pair to their indoor and outdoor habitats, as well as daily routines featuring training sessions, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/how-care-giant-pandas\">enrichment<\/a> activities and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/blogs\/national-zoo-conservation-biology-institute\/2024\/12\/10\/to-keep-the-national-zoos-pandas-satisfied-staff-prepare-an-endless-supply-of-bamboo\/\">bamboo-heavy diet<\/a>. By offering the bears verbal encouragement\u2014and treats like carrots and apples\u2014keepers can train them to participate in their own <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/science-behind-giant-panda-veterinary-care\">medical care<\/a>: for example, by teaching the animals to hold out a paw for a blood draw or stand up on cue for a visual examination of the torso and legs.<\/p>\n<p>As James Steeil, a supervisory veterinarian at NZCBI, told <em>Smithsonian <\/em>last May, the pandas decide \u201cfor themselves\u201d when they are ready to meet the public. \u201cSome bears do it faster than others,\u201d he said. \u201cOthers do it slower, and that\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visitors hoping to welcome the pandas in person must reserve <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.nationalzoo.si.edu\/events?_gl=1*njlqfm*_gcl_au*NTQ3NDg2MzUxLjE3MzA3NDE1MzQ.*_ga*NjA4MTY2NDM5LjE3MTgwMzgyMTY.*_ga_FZ22Y9JDR2*MTczNzEyNDQ3MC42NS4xLjE3MzcxMzE1NzEuMC4wLjA.*_ga_2JEVMJZZBX*MTczNzEyNDQ3MC4yLjEuMTczNzEzMTU3MS4wLjAuMA..\">free entry passes online<\/a>. To mark the species\u2019 much-anticipated return to Washington, NZCBI will host a two-week <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/visit\/events\/district-panda-party\">District of Panda Party<\/a>, with offerings ranging from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/lunar-new-year-explained-and-how-participate-180976971\/\">Lunar New Year<\/a> event to a screening of the movie <em>Kung Fu Panda<\/em>. For those unable to make it to Washington, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/webcams\/panda-cam\">Giant Panda Cam<\/a>, a feed of 40 cameras spread out across the animals\u2019 habitat, will broadcast live between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern. His mother, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/get-close-and-personal-bao-bao-amazing-new-photos-180948002\/\">Bao Bao<\/a>, was born at NZCBI in 2013, and his grandparents Mei Xiang and Tian Tian lived in Washington for 23 years. As Thompson told <em>Smithsonian <\/em>last May, she is eager to see \u201cif Bao Li is anything like his mom,\u201d whom the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/our-columnists\/washingtons-other-drama-the-unbearable-departure-of-its-last-panda-cub\"><em>New Yorker<\/em><\/a> described as \u201cdelicate and independent.\u201d More recently, Thompson told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/video\/panda-monium-new-pandas-at-national-zoo-set-to-make-debut-228393029605\">NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d<\/a> that Bao Li \u201creally does look like his granddad, and also just kind of his behavior and his sweetness, he gets from his grandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/revisit-51-years-of-giant-pandas-at-the-national-zoo-from-beloved-babies-to-fun-snow-180982940\/\">history of pandas<\/a> in Washington dates back to February 1972, when Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai offered to gift pandas to the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2022\/03\/16\/pandas-china-nixon-dc\/\">during a conversation<\/a> with first lady Pat Nixon. Two pandas, Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling, arrived in town <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zirm5ETHF7U\">that April<\/a>, attracting more than <a href=\"https:\/\/siarchives.si.edu\/blog\/%E2%80%9Cdo-pandas-affect-everyone-way%E2%80%9D-celebrating-50-years-giant-pandas-national-zoo\">one million visitors<\/a> in their first month on view. Though Zoo staff encouraged the pair to breed, none of their cubs survived longer than a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/1987\/06\/28\/ling-lings-cub-dies-after-3-days\/748845d1-7e8e-475e-aadd-9895d003c99c\/\">few days<\/a>. After natural breeding efforts repeatedly failed, scientists turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/local\/2004\/09\/01\/hoping-but-not-necessarily-expecting\/1d53eb20-1286-4ff8-830d-511fdb0584c1\/\">artificial insemination<\/a>. Mei Xiang gave birth to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/learning-from-tai-shan-117770450\/\">Tai Shan<\/a>, NZCBI\u2019s first cub to survive infancy, in July 2005. Two more healthy cubs, Bao Bao and <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/bei-beis-most-memorable-moments-zoo\">Bei Bei<\/a>, followed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/national-zoos-panda-in-labor\/2013\/08\/23\/98044f06-0b55-11e3-9941-6711ed662e71_story.html\">August 2013<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2015\/08\/22\/433848374\/giant-panda-at-national-zoo-gives-birth-to-a-cub\">August 2015<\/a>, respectively. Five years later, in August 2020, Mei Xiang\u2014by then considered of \u201cadvanced maternal age\u201d and unlikely to give birth to a healthy cub, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/newsdesk\/releases\/giant-panda-cub-born-smithsonians-national-zoo\">statement<\/a>\u2014surprised keepers by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/national-zoo-welcomes-baby-panda-180975590\/\">doing just that<\/a>. At 22, she became the oldest panda to give birth in the U.S. and the second-oldest documented in the world. Her cub, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/help-name-national-zoos-new-panda-cub-180976304\/\">christened Xiao Qi Ji<\/a>, or \u201clittle miracle,\u201d captivated people worldwide, who followed his every move via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/top-10-giant-panda-cub-cam-moments-180975739\/\">Giant Panda Cam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With Bao Li and Qing Bao\u2019s debut, a new era of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/pandamonium-180976305\/\">pandamonium<\/a>\u201d is set to begin. As an excited young visitor who got a sneak peek at the bears told \u201cToday,\u201d \u201cI like that they\u2019re big. They look fluffy. I want to squeeze them.\u201d At a press conference on Friday, Smith echoed this sentiment, saying, \u201cI\u2019ve been working with pandas for almost 20 years. &#8230; One day, I suspect I\u2019ll go out, look at a panda and the magic will wear off, but it never does.
