{"id":49904,"date":"2025-01-27T02:22:09","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T02:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/aerospace\/jal-to-apply-riblet-shaped-paint-on-long-haul-b787-flights\/"},"modified":"2025-01-27T02:22:09","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T02:22:09","slug":"jal-to-apply-riblet-shaped-paint-on-long-haul-b787-flights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=49904","title":{"rendered":"JAL to apply riblet-shaped paint on long-haul B787 flights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Japan Airlines (JAL) is set to apply riblet-shaped coating on its B787-9 aircraft bound for long-haul international flights.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), industrial paint company O-Well, and Nikon, JAL has been conducting flight tests for the world\u2019s first riblet-shape applied over exterior paint since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Riblets are fine groove structures inspired by the shape of shark skin which reduce water resistance.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-leaderboard bn-1\"\/>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcZOdWGcJC3yabEHSc0M-4_TUKtcIc6eNpl6pmta8o43sSKUyuH3tr2xXzdzlBEfeZy6qwncUe9MrBJChTApLFHCLiP_y9JbWbHTO55RnZrdnKgK8Lul71aR6DcD795M0bPR9ifwQ?key=paaBQJf3oCSXRq9LlDaDxSka\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcZOdWGcJC3yabEHSc0M-4_TUKtcIc6eNpl6pmta8o43sSKUyuH3tr2xXzdzlBEfeZy6qwncUe9MrBJChTApLFHCLiP_y9JbWbHTO55RnZrdnKgK8Lul71aR6DcD795M0bPR9ifwQ?key=paaBQJf3oCSXRq9LlDaDxSka\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image from Nikon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>JAL said that the riblet coating test is one of the efforts it is promoting to contribute toward the decarbonization of the aircraft industry.<\/p>\n<p>According to JAL, testing showed that drag reduction rate during cruising is 0.24%, which is expected to result in an annual reduction of approximately 119 tons of fuel consumption and about 381 tons of CO2 emissions.
