Prolonged mandatory closures or minimized operations decreased foot traffic \u2014 which almost means declining sales. Some, including Target and Walmart, have spoken about the rise in inventory shrink, the industry term for product loss due to theft and other unpaid losses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Target CEO Brian Cornell has said stores had been struggling with &#8220;an unacceptable amount of retail theft and organized retail crime.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Dicks Sporting Goods CFO\u00a0Navdeep Gupta\u00a0told investors that\u00a0&#8220;The organized retail crime impact came in significantly higher than we anticipated.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Profit losses aside, working in one of these big box stores comes at a cost to staff wellbeing at times, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/retail\/walmart-costco-get-a-multibillion-announcement\">Related: Walmart, Costco get a multibillion announcement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/losspreventionmedia.com\/violence-in-the-retail-workplace-report\/\">Retail Workplace Survey<\/a> by Loss Prevention Magazine revealed that 60% of retail workers saw some form of violence on the job in the past year. Here&#8217;s how that breaks down:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>23% of those surveyed said they were a victim of verbal assault<\/li>\n<li>14% said they were a victim of physical assault<\/li>\n<li>10% said they were the victim of bullying or emotional assault<\/li>\n<li>3% said they were the victim of a sexual assault<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Some Walmarts paying out<\/h2>\n<p>Many of these unsavory aspects of retail are why employee attrition is so common nowadays. But losing staff is expensive and time consuming, since retailers are forced to reallocate resources to hire, train, and re-train new employees after one has left. It also tends to be bad for company morale. <\/p>\n<p>Walmart, however, tries to avoid this issue by hiring and promoting from within, giving employees an incentive to stick around and rise through the ranks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beginning on February 1, the retailer said it will lift its base pay for market managers from\u00a0$130,000 to $160,000.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how some of the pay changes will play out for managers:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Base pay: up from\u00a0$130,000 to $160,000<\/li>\n<li>Stock grants: up from $75,000 to\u00a0$100,000<\/li>\n<li>Annual bonuses: up from 90% to 100% of base pay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Walmart is increasing base pay, bonus opportunity and annual stock awards for our Market Managers,&#8221; Walmart said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>When added together with bonuses and stock grants, some managers will stand to take up over $600,000 at the end of the day \u2014roughly $200,000 more than the salary for a sitting U.S. president.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Walmart says about 440 managers are already within this pay band.<\/p>\n<p>Such pay is &#8220;key for our business and for serving our customers however they shop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/investing\/stocks\/veteran-fund-manager-delivers-alarming-s-p-500-forecast\">Related: Veteran fund manager delivers alarming S&amp;P 500 forecast<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;ve worked in retail before, firstly, thank you \u2014 since it&#8217;s a near thankless job.\u00a0 If you have held a job in the industry, or if you&#8217;ve even spent time in a big box store recently, you&#8217;ve probably noticed how difficult it can be to manage so many moving parts at once.\u00a0 Related: Walmart, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":49093,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[93],"tags":[11419,28461,8134,11191],"dealstore":[],"offerexpiration":[],"class_list":["post-49092","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance","tag-managers","tag-presidents","tag-u-s","tag-walmart"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.4 -
