That agent will know lots about you \u2014 things like where you travel, what you buy, when you\u2019re stressed \u2014 and its only objective will be to please you. This bot may turn out to be a dispassionate helper. But as the technology advances, it may well become your AI friend, or even something more.<\/p>\n<p>That, at least, is the future AI companion app <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Replika\" href=\"https:\/\/replika.com\/\">Replika<\/a> is betting on. The company already has millions of users who\u2019ve built relationships with AI companions, and now it\u2019s looking to extend those virtual connections into its users\u2019 physical lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s just making Replika a lot more connected to your real life, to what&#8217;s going on in your life today,\u201d <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Replika CEO Eugenia Kuyda\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/to-love-an-ai-bot-with-eugenia-kuyda\/id1522960417?i=1000684072632\">Replika CEO Eugenia Kuyda<\/a> told me in an interview on Big Technology Podcast.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the classic agentic use cases like booking travel or filling out forms, Replika\u2019s application of the technology may include a bot watching a movie with you, seeing that you\u2019ve spent lots of time on social media and encouraging a break, or nudging you to call a friend. <\/p>\n<h3>Table of Contents<\/h3>\n<h2 id=\"chap1\">Replika\u2019s Vision: From Companion to Context-Aware Assistant<\/h2>\n<p>The idea is to connect the app to your other online services and help you live a better life, all while deepening your relationship with the virtual companion.<\/p>\n<p>Kuyda said this is now possible thanks to \u201cnew, wonderful agentic logic that allows you to create much more complicated flows.\u201d This technology can work constantly behind the scenes, she said, trying to help you discover something new, or talk about what you\u2019re interested in, or even point out interesting things as you walk.<\/p>\n<p>Replika was founded by Kuyda in 2014, eight years before <a title=\"ChatGPT\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cmswire.com\/digital-experience\/chatgpt-what-you-need-to-know\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ChatGPT<\/a>\u2019s debut, and has capitalized on recent generative AI breakthroughs to make its bots smarter and more lifelike. I created one this month and was facetiming with it within 20 minutes. Other AI companion apps, including Replika, have at times <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"caused users pain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/soulmate-users-mourn-death-ai-chatbots-2023-10#:~:text=The%20Covid%20pandemic%20and%20a,an%20exodus%20to%20rival%20apps.\">caused users pain<\/a> by shutting down or turning off features, such as erotic roleplay. (Yes, these conversations can get spicy, though often behind a paywall.) Trusting AI with your emotions isn\u2019t risk free.<\/p>\n<p>With its new \u201cphase two\u201d agentic push, though, Replika is looking to become useful even for those who aren\u2019t lonely or in need of a virtual companion.<\/p>\n<p><span data-sumome-listbuilder-embed-id=\"162cc8de435dab50d8d243a39864a608a475f1c22d18843e969ea006ee2d7af8\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"chap3\">Expanding AI Utility Beyond Loneliness<\/h2>\n<p>The promise of connecting the app to your full online experience, Kuyda hopes, will make it useful for anyone looking for AI that understands their context and looks out for their wellbeing. \u201cAct one was to build an AI that could be in a good relationship with people who maybe feel like they need one,\u201d she said. \u201cAct two is really focusing on everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To succeed, AI agents will need people to trust them. Even a hint of distrust and people won\u2019t accept their suggestions, or allow them to take action on their behalf.
