I need <\/em>your help.<\/p>\n

Friends, shoppers and Costco lovers lend me your ears.<\/p>\n

We need a second Costco in Birmingham.\u00a0And where would one locate said second location?<\/p>\n

Trussville!<\/p>\n

You might think I selfishly want one where I live, but I don\u2019t live anywhere near Trussville.\u00a0 I just want all the people who live in that quadrant of the Birmingham metro to stop coming to my<\/em> Costco in Hoover.<\/p>\n

No offense, of course.\u00a0 Costco\/Hoover is a zoo because of you.<\/p>\n

The Birmingham MSA (metropolitan statistical area) is about 1.1 million people.\u00a0 Literally all of those people shop at my Costco, especially on weekends.\u00a0 As far as I can tell, Trussvillians drive approximately 41 miles to save on gas at Costco.\u00a0 I know they do because the line for gas sometimes backs up into the parking lot for 14 pumps.\u00a0 My friends to the northeast really need to do the math on those savings.<\/p>\n

I do understand the attraction of Costco since I am attracted almost weekly.\u00a0 In fact, I make up excuses just to go.\u00a0 I don\u2019t do this for any other retailer with the possible exception of Lululemon, but that is a personal issue with high quality active wear.\u00a0 Go ahead, look at my picture.\u00a0 I am not exactly a yoga mom.\u00a0 Back to the Costco attraction.<\/p>\n

Is it the beautiful, artful interior with warm lighting and nice music?\u00a0 Is it that you can pull right up to the building to park?\u00a0 Is it the Express Lane for 10 items or less?\u00a0 Hardee- har- har on that one.\u00a0 No one buys ten items or less at Costco.<\/p>\n

Costco is a well-orchestrated retail trap in which none of us minds being caught.\u00a0 From the moment you come in with your oversize buggy you are like a rat in a maze.\u00a0 Perhaps you need a new 85\u201d plasma TV today.\u00a0 Those are immediately on your right.\u00a0 Immediately on your left the scenery changes every week.<\/p>\n

Today might be 60 feet of supplements that did not exist five years ago.\u00a0 Next week it could be men\u2019s shavers or drones (I could use one of those).\u00a0 It will NOT be toilet paper or paper towels.\u00a0 You need to go 400 feet farther in the maze to get those.\u00a0 Those folks in Kirkland, WA know what they are doing.<\/p>\n

After the TV\u2019s and drones you get on the main freeway.\u00a0 You would think people have driven on enough freeways to know you drive on the right.\u00a0 Not at Costco.\u00a0 People not only stray from their lane, they actually cross over into oncoming traffic. \u00a0\u00a0I find this very annoying.<\/p>\n

I almost always make it past the clothes aisle since they have nothing small enough for me to wear.\u00a0 I am five feet three inches tall and weigh 130 pounds.\u00a0 Costco clothes buyers don\u2019t know men my size exist.<\/p>\n

On my right I now see bedding and small appliances.\u00a0 I keep focused and move ahead.\u00a0 Wait, is that a backup generator on sale?\u00a0 I don\u2019t have one of those.\u00a0 My wife convinces me we don\u2019t need one, either.\u00a0 Keep moving.\u00a0 What about the 15 foot tall Halloween dragon?\u00a0 We don\u2019t have one of those, either.\u00a0 Keep moving.\u00a0 Trouble ahead; bakery and wine.<\/p>\n

Being a Baptist I won\u2019t discuss the wonderful wine selection since some of my fellow parishioners may be reading this.\u00a0 But, we can talk about bread, right?\u00a0 The bread problem is that just two people live in our house which means you have to buy one loaf of Rosemary Parmesan for each person.\u00a0 Solution?\u00a0 Freeze one!<\/p>\n

Next, on to meat and seafood.\u00a0 This is where you can drop some serious cash.\u00a0 Chilean sea bass?\u00a0 New Zealand lamb?\u00a0 Monster lobster tails and gigantic scallops?\u00a0 Eat well now and take out a second mortgage on your home.\u00a0 Costco thinks you\u2019re worth it.<\/p>\n

We have just passed the halfway mark in our marathon and our cart subtotal has just passed $300.\u00a0 Below average, but not bad.\u00a0 Uh oh, $4.99 rotisserie chickens just coming off the fire. \u00a0That\u2019s three meals of protein at our house. \u00a0Grab one, keep moving.<\/p>\n

Wait, what\u2019s that I smell?\u00a0 Organic Beef Shiatzu Meatballs?\u00a0 The Demo People are lined up and ready to tempt us.\u00a0 Today\u2019s lineup is Neapolitan Pizza on a Stick, fresh mozzarella cheese balls and farm raised tempura pork parts.\u00a0 I line up for all three.\u00a0 I may have pushed a small child aside on the last table since only one sample remained.\u00a0 Sorry, kid, seniority rules at Costco.<\/p>\n

Still not out of the woods we head down the frozen food aisle to buy three month\u2019s supply of thick sliced bacon and a 64 count box of ice cream drumsticks.\u00a0 They were on sale.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good day.<\/p>\n

I snuck by the salesperson representing hot tubs only to be caught by a sign that said Cape Cod potato chips, the really big bag, were on sale.\u00a0 I took two. \u00a0Time for checkout.<\/p>\n

The checkout lines may get long, but those employees are fast, efficient and pretty darn friendly.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen the productivity charts on these people.\u00a0 They have them on the wall as you head down to the restrooms.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 No pressure there.\u00a0 I hope they get paid a lot.<\/p>\n

Receipt in hand we head toward the exit with just one last thing to do.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ll take two of those $1.50 hot dog\/cold drink combos.\u201d\u00a0 I love Costco.\u00a0 Burp.<\/p>\n

Old joke:\u00a0 What\u2019s the most expensive vehicle you can drive?<\/p>\n

Answer:\u00a0 A Costco shopping cart.<\/p>\n

P.S.\u00a0 Costco will also help plan your next exotic vacation.\u00a0 I may let them get us to Figi\u2026as long as Figi has a Costco.<\/p>\n
