Those bygone moments seem increasingly<br \/>\ndistant, replaced by boarded-up shops and the convenience of online clicks. But<br \/>\nis the decline of the high street inevitable and can art and creativity really save<br \/>\nit?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">This time I explore a<br \/>\ndifferent path for high streets around the world \u2013 one where <b>art becomes the<br \/>\nvibrant paintbrush, reimagining the high street as a canvas for community,<br \/>\nexperience, and possibility.<span\/><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"more\"\/><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\"><b\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">This post marks a milestone \u2013<br \/>\nmy 400th blog! With artificial intelligence (AI) on the rise and people busier<br \/>\nthan ever, I wondered about the future of blogs and the direction I should take<br \/>\nwith this site. Some might see blogs as outdated, but AI can&#8217;t replicate humanity<br \/>\nwithout it appearing fake or stereotyped \u2013 nor can it convey the<br \/>\n&#8220;why&#8221; behind my art.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Blogs remain a powerful way to<br \/>\nconnect with a real audience and a way for artists to provide the narrative to<br \/>\ntheir work and the thinking behind it. That\u2019s something that is difficult to<br \/>\nconvey through a regular artist website, most are geared towards driving<br \/>\ntraffic to purchase routes and I think art, and artists deserve more than that,<br \/>\nbut maybe I\u2019m just old school. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">So, I&#8217;m embracing my humanity<br \/>\nand focusing on what AI can&#8217;t do. I&#8217;ll be diving deeper into my retro-inspired<br \/>\nwork, providing a narrative alongside the art that documents the what, when,<br \/>\nand why, rather than the previous 399 posts that have really focussed on sharing<br \/>\nknowledge and experience. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The art world constantly changes<br \/>\nbut it also stays the same, once you gain experience it becomes easier to<br \/>\nnavigate and by easy, I mean well, it will still be character building but<br \/>\nexperience will give you the skills to get you through. While I&#8217;ve built a<br \/>\ncollector base with landscapes and abstracts I haven&#8217;t shared much about these<br \/>\n&#8220;retro&#8221; works, which were often commissioned. I\u2019ve painted icons and<br \/>\nmemories from the 80s since the 1980s, everything from early digital pre-Warhol<br \/>\nperiod work right the way through to cover art. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">From now on, expect a deeper<br \/>\ndive into my process behind the art. Ultimately, I want to create a visual<br \/>\nrecord of these three influential decades, a time of not just technological<br \/>\nrevolution, but also a period in time that witnessed a major shift in people\u2019s<br \/>\nattitudes towards everything from art to consumerism, even politics. The future of brick-and-mortar<br \/>\nstores is uncertain, with online giants like Amazon changing how we shop. We<br \/>\nmight even question if the high street&#8217;s heyday was already fading in the 80s!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">This series is a starting<br \/>\npoint for a conversation \u2013 what will become of the high street?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The British high street, once<br \/>\na bustling centre of life and commerce, now stands at a crossroads. This story<br \/>\nechoes across the globe: what were once proud symbols of community and commerce<br \/>\nare now boarded up, or filled with replacements that don&#8217;t quite capture the<br \/>\nsame spirit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">In the UK especially, these<br \/>\nreplacements can be puzzling. Small towns with ageing populations might have<br \/>\nseven Turkish barber shops, charity shops (thrift stores in the US), American<br \/>\ncandy stores, and nail salons. Who needs that many barbers when there&#8217;s less<br \/>\nhair than customers?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Of course, this decline isn&#8217;t<br \/>\nuniversal. Thriving high streets still exist in some parts of Europe and the<br \/>\nUS. But wherever decay sets in, for social, economic, or political reasons, a<br \/>\nshadow falls over the community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Here in the UK, the<br \/>\nindependent art supply store I relied on is gone. Now, a quick canvas for a<br \/>\ncommission requires online ordering or a long drive. This has a ripple effect \u2013<br \/>\nthe high street used to be vital for local businesses to connect with each other.<br \/>\nNow, it&#8217;s a waiting game of unreliable deliveries, a system that doesn&#8217;t care<br \/>\nif your art supplies arrive broken.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Look, I know I might sound<br \/>\nlike someone yelling at clouds, but I truly wish we could find something that<br \/>\nbrings communities together again.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The exact start of the high<br \/>\nstreets decline is hard to pinpoint. Some high streets thrived longer than<br \/>\nothers. But for Britain, I suspect the 1980s marked a turning point. In the United Kingdom, new towns had been created to manage the<br \/>\npopulation overspill from surrounding areas, old minefields were converted into<br \/>\nhousing estates, development corporations sprang up, and Milton Keynes, a new<br \/>\ntown way north of London had concrete cows installed in a field and everyone<br \/>\nthought it was fun.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Despite being newly created<br \/>\nwith new people everywhere there was still a sense of old-small town community<br \/>\npresent, but this spirit hinged on having lots of new town benefits such as<br \/>\nvibrant high streets, enough local facilities and police that policed, doctors<br \/>\nthat doctored, and schools that didn\u2019t have to compete for students through a<br \/>\nleague table and that weren\u2019t falling down because they used the wrong type of<br \/>\nconcrete. I kid you not, that\u2019s what\u2019s happening with schools here in Blighty.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">New homes were built at pace,<br \/>\nsomething that rarely happens in the modern day. High streets flourished from<br \/>\nnew footfall and they really did become hubs for the community to gather. Out<br \/>\nof town shopping centres and malls were rapidly created, they offered a<br \/>\nconvenience and had everything in one place and they had exciting and exotic<br \/>\nbrands that could never be found in regular stores.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Malls, at least initially were<br \/>\nnever seen as an immediate threat to the high street. They were still bricks<br \/>\nand mortar, and it was unlikely that small independent retailers would want to<br \/>\ngo head to toe with the big players and they often sold very different things.<br \/>\nThere was space for both. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The supermarkets and grocery<br \/>\nstores were some of the first to transition completely to the out of town malls,<br \/>\nthey could carry much more stock and provide even more choice for customers in<br \/>\nthe bigger locations. I remember a couple of supermarkets moving out of town,<br \/>\nbut there were still smaller retailers who could fill the void, not everyone<br \/>\nwanted to visit the mall and not everyone could travel easily but when the<br \/>\nsupermarkets began to leave the high street it would be another chip in the<br \/>\nfabric.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">These out of town centres were<br \/>\nconvenient but there was a reliance on either using public transport or<br \/>\ntravelling by car, the traditional local high street still served a purpose<br \/>\nespecially as car ownership in the UK during the 70s was still relatively low. So<br \/>\nwhy do I say the 1980s had been pivotal in the decline of high streets at a<br \/>\ntime when high streets were still vibrant and booming?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Whenever I ask anyone this<br \/>\nquestion they undoubtedly say that the internet doomed the high street, I\u2019m not<br \/>\nsure that\u2019s entirely the case because we didn\u2019t have the internet back in the<br \/>\n80s, although there\u2019s little doubt that the internet would certainly accelerate<br \/>\n<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>and seal the fate of the high streets<br \/>\ndecline in the future. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">I think it all started with a<br \/>\ncombination of things. A perfect storm of innovation and technology coming<br \/>\ntogether and the visionaries who embraced those early technologies and began to<br \/>\nwonder how life changing it could be in the next decade and beyond. They made<br \/>\nlittle to no real impact on local retail footfall at the time, but the seeds<br \/>\nhad been sown, maybe even inadvertently, I\u2019m not sure anyone in the 1980s would<br \/>\nhave believed that the future high street would be accessed through a keyboard.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Those pre-web technologies<br \/>\nsuch as bulletin boards (BBS) which sprang up in the early 1980s,\u00a0using platforms<br \/>\nlike the Boston Computer Exchange (1982) facilitated online classifieds and rudimentary<br \/>\nelectronic shopping. They\u00a0mainly focussed on used computers and<br \/>\ntech-related products, which were still very specialist and very niche on the<br \/>\nhigh street.\u00a0Transactions often involved phone calls or mail orders for<br \/>\npayment and delivery.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">France&#8217;s Minitel (1982) and<br \/>\nthe UK&#8217;s Prestel (1979) were videotex systems accessed through TVs and<br \/>\ndedicated terminals.\u00a0They offered online<br \/>\nbanking,\u00a0classifieds,\u00a0and limited online shopping through text-based<br \/>\ninterfaces and proprietary protocols.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Both of these technologies<br \/>\nwere niche, but the target audience for these systems were more likely to eventually<br \/>\nbecome the tech entrepreneurs that would take the seeds and push the technology<br \/>\neven further by creating emerging web based systems. Mainly in the guise of <b>CompuServe<br \/>\nElectronic Mall (1985) <\/b>and <b>Freenet (1986).<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">CompuServe was one of the<br \/>\nfirst online shopping malls accessed through dial-up connections,\u00a0offering<br \/>\nproduct information and ordering from various vendors.\u00a0Payment often<br \/>\ninvolved pre-paid accounts or credit card orders over the phone. Encryption,<br \/>\nforget it, it wasn\u2019t unusual to cut out an order form from a magazine and send<br \/>\nall of your credit card details through the traditional postal services.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Freenet was an early<br \/>\npeer-to-peer network allowing users to share files and<br \/>\ninformation,\u00a0including software and digital art.\u00a0Though not<br \/>\ntechnically e-commerce,\u00a0it laid the groundwork for decentralized online<br \/>\ndistribution models. This would become pivotal in the years ahead and<br \/>\nsolidified the foundations for the internet we know today. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">There were other developments<br \/>\ntoo, <b>Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)<\/b> was being used in the 1980s to<br \/>\nexchange purchase orders and invoices electronically and it is this that would<br \/>\nform the foundations for B2B e-commerce in later years. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">By this time, online banking<br \/>\nbegan to emerge and this allowed customers who had invested in these early<br \/>\ntechnologies to do some very simple online tasks such as checking balances and<br \/>\nin some instances they were even able to make rudimentary transfers, something<br \/>\nthat would later mature into the behemoths of banking systems that we see<br \/>\ntoday. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">There were still plenty of<br \/>\nlimitations and challenges that would stall the inevitable changes that were to<br \/>\ncome, dial-up internet was slow, internet connections were much less prevalent<br \/>\nthan they are today, and there were concerns around limited security especially<br \/>\nwhen it came to data security and online payment fraud, problems that would<br \/>\nexponentially grow over time as both the systems and the scammers matured into<br \/>\nmore complex beasts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">These were barriers for<br \/>\nconsumers and whilst those consumers were buying into the shiny new home<br \/>\ncomputer and PC thing which was being heavily advertised, the public were less<br \/>\nwilling to engage with the online world because there was a cost barrier and to<br \/>\nbe honest, people were generally either playing video games or using<br \/>\nproductivity software. This was the golden age of Lotus 1-2-3, folks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The majority of the mainstream<br \/>\nconsumer population had little to no idea of the online world and when they did<br \/>\ncatch a glimpse of it, that world was usually presented through clunky text<br \/>\nbased interfaces or depicted on glass screens in a control centre as the<br \/>\ncentral focus of an action film. Remember, this was still very much rooted in<br \/>\nthe days of early IBM, DOS, and very much pre-Microsoft Windows. There were no<br \/>\nuser friendly interfaces, the interaction was often limited to typing on a<br \/>\nkeyboard.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Overall, online commerce in<br \/>\nthe 1980s was nascent and far from mainstream. In the decades since a lot has changed in the world<br \/>\nof TV advertising, its format, how ads would be targeted, the consumer<br \/>\nexperience and there are huge differences not only between 80s and modern day<br \/>\nproduction quality standards but also in the content that ads were able to display.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Advertising cigarettes was a<br \/>\nhuge source of ad-revenue in the 80s, I still remember the Marlboro ads, and in<br \/>\nthe UK, the John Player Special ads that were adorned on formula one racing<br \/>\ncars. Tobacco advertising was banned in the UK and other territories over the<br \/>\nfollowing years and TV advertising shifted away from the typical stereotypes<br \/>\nthat had been used in the earlier years, but it still had a way to go to get<br \/>\nwhere we are today. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">In the 1980s, ads would<br \/>\ntypically run between 30 and 60 seconds, usually aired between scheduled<br \/>\nprogramming blocks and limited in number per hour. A 30-minute program might<br \/>\nhave had ads at the start, halfway through and again pre-the next program, hour<br \/>\nlong programs would generally see advertising every 15-minutes here in the UK,<br \/>\nin some countries ads were even more prominent. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">There were limited channels<br \/>\nand viewers had nowhere to hide. It wasn\u2019t until the mid to late 80s that video<br \/>\nrecorders became much more mainstream and allowed consumers to record TV and<br \/>\nfast forward through the ads. In short, advertisers and ad-executives had a<br \/>\ncaptive audience, but as an advertiser you had little to no idea who those<br \/>\npeople were.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The ad-men\/women of the 80s<br \/>\ncertainly had their challenges with this lack of trackability, but ads worked<br \/>\nperhaps because they were largely unregulated in the same way as they are<br \/>\ntoday. Content was genuinely, if not politically correctly, sticky. It<br \/>\nresonated because the messages were far less subtle than they often are today<br \/>\nand consumers were still largely discovering technology for the first time. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Catchy jingles, celebrity<br \/>\nendorsements, no influencers or con-fluencers as I like to call the majority of<br \/>\nthem (oh my I do sound old and grumpy), and while I can say that I didn\u2019t<br \/>\nalways agree with the portrayed stereotypes, advertisers were bold enough to<br \/>\npush humour in ways that make todays ads sterile enough to avoid any possible<br \/>\nlitigation. TV is rarely brave in the modern day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Maybe because we also had<br \/>\nregional programming and entertaining TV that would be watched by millions of<br \/>\npeople in real time, I think I would be minded to say that those ads probably<br \/>\nworked better than the hyper-targeted, highly focus group led ads that we see<br \/>\ntoday, albeit some of those 80s ads would be best left in the 80s or completely<br \/>\nforgotten. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"line-height: 200%; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\"><b><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\">Economic Restructuring\u2026<\/span><\/b><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The 1980s also witnessed<br \/>\neconomic restructuring, leading to the decline of some traditional industries<br \/>\nand increased competition from overseas goods. This impacted local economies<br \/>\nand potentially reduced spending on non-essential items typically found on the<br \/>\nhigh street. Unemployment was significantly higher than it had been and there had<br \/>\nby then been a decline, particularly in rural England within industries that<br \/>\nhad for hundreds of years been the providers of a stable income for generations<br \/>\nof the same families. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Coal mines had been shut down,<br \/>\nthe steel industry was in decline, it was a decade of either decadence and<br \/>\nsuccess or complete despair depending on what industry you worked in. An<br \/>\ninequality that had existed before was being amplified across communities and<br \/>\nthis would eventually trickle into high streets up and down the country. Advertising was<br \/>\nbecoming more powerful and the world was becoming exponentially smaller with<br \/>\nthe advent of mobile phones, early websites and a growing awareness about how<br \/>\nthe online world would provide the future of flying cars that we had been<br \/>\npromised in the 1950s and 60s. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">People were ready to embrace<br \/>\nchange and by the mid-80s, were also being encouraged to buy into the world of increasingly<br \/>\nmore affordable technology. Home computing saw its barriers to entry removed<br \/>\nwith the introduction of cheap 8-bit home microcomputers, and the rapid pace of<br \/>\ntechnical innovation began to get people excited for the future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">I often wonder how many of<br \/>\nthose people, me included, figured that technology would eventually have such<br \/>\nan impact on everyone\u2019s lives. The target audience at the time were mostly<br \/>\nliving in the here and now, and many of them were wearing Swatch watches and<br \/>\ngaudy colours from United Colors of Benneton. Looking back, the 80s were very<br \/>\nmuch all about living in the now.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">It&#8217;s important to note that all<br \/>\nof these these factors intertwined, The convenience of out-of-town centres was<br \/>\npartly enabled by improved transportation infrastructure, itself a product of<br \/>\ntechnological advancement. The rise of TV advertising and direct marketing<br \/>\nrelied on technological developments in communication and changing consumer<br \/>\npreferences were likely influenced by factors like economic restructuring and<br \/>\nthe overall cultural shift towards mass consumption led by the brands and the<br \/>\nmarketing teams. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The 80s was the real<br \/>\nbirthplace for mass consumerism, even I bought into it when I got my first<br \/>\nFilofax which I carried around but didn\u2019t have either the responsibility or the<br \/>\nsocial life to fill in. One year later, that Filofax still had no entries, but<br \/>\nit was a free gift with a bottle of Drakkar Noir, an 80s aftershave that I<br \/>\nstill wear to this day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">As I said earlier, it was a<br \/>\ncombination of things that scuppered our Saturday afternoons bumbling around<br \/>\nthe local shops. It was a perfect storm and a hive mind of innovation that<br \/>\nfinally sealed the high streets eventual fate, but there is little doubt, that while<br \/>\nthe fast pace of technological change in the 1980s wasn&#8217;t the sole culprit, it<br \/>\nwas undeniably a contributing factor in its decline.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Beyond the economic impact,<br \/>\nthe decline of the high street has woven itself into the fabric of social loss.<br \/>\nIndependent shops and businesses, still to a large extent where they still<br \/>\nexist are the lifeblood of many communities but where they have been forced to<br \/>\nclose, the closures also shuttered access to the personalised services and<br \/>\nunique products, and tactile buying experiences that they offered. Much of the<br \/>\nhigh street of the past was broadly, all about the experience and in part, the<br \/>\nhuman connections that could be made. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Retail was a by-product of<br \/>\nsocial interactions, as the decade matured consumerism began to reach fever<br \/>\npitch. It\u2019s not unusual to see communities working with local<br \/>\nauthorities and landlords to transform vacant spaces into community hubs.<br \/>\nInnovative retailers are blending online and offline experiences, offering<br \/>\nclick-and-collect services and personalised in-store consultations, so what<br \/>\nabout the future?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">For those<br \/>\nof us who might be looking at the past through rose tinted glasses and holding<br \/>\nout for a return of the high street as it was, I think we have to face the<br \/>\ninevitable that we are unlikely to ever see that type of high street ever<br \/>\nagain. That\u2019s probably not such a bad thing, the high street has had a history<br \/>\nof change for hundreds of years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">There\u2019s<br \/>\nalso a question as to whether High Streets are worth saving, I believe they<br \/>\nare, they remain critical to local economies and provide employment<br \/>\nopportunities without which economies would stagnate and decline even further. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">How we go<br \/>\nabout saving them is a bigger question, especially during times when finances<br \/>\nare stretched and you need more money to buy less.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>High streets have become much more complex in<br \/>\nhow they\u2019re made up too. Multiple landlords, much more stringent regulation,<br \/>\nless footfall, in some cases perhaps because they\u2019re also much less accessible<br \/>\nthan before, and sprawling urban areas mean that high streets are further away<br \/>\nfrom where people live.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The high street\u2019s decline is a<br \/>\ncomplicated issue with no easy answers, but there are pockets of hope from<br \/>\ncentres that have been entirely reimagined, and where communities and planners<br \/>\nhave been thinking outside of the proverbial box. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The narrative of decline is<br \/>\ndifferent the world over. In Europe, many high streets have continued to<br \/>\nthrive, albeit in a reimagined way and mostly due to the strong social safety<br \/>\nnets and cultural significance of public spaces which afford some protection.<br \/>\nThe problem for most regular high streets is that they don\u2019t have easy access<br \/>\nto a Roman Coliseum to attract the crowds, most high streets are no longer the<br \/>\ndestination, they\u2019ve become much more passive and rely on passing trade.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">In Asia, there is a very mixed<br \/>\nstory of booming economies in major centres leading to continued growth and<br \/>\ndevelopment, but there are also stories that mirror the plight of declining high<br \/>\nstreets elsewhere. In the US, some high streets and malls have been finding<br \/>\nsuccess in mixed-use developments combining entertainment, retail, offices and<br \/>\nhousing, bringing communities back into the areas that have previously been in<br \/>\ndecline.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Mixed use spaces that offer<br \/>\nthis kind of integration alongside experience driven retail with a community<br \/>\nfocus further highlights the need for traditional high street\u2019s to adapt. They<br \/>\ndemonstrate how high streets and public spaces can once again thrive, but it<br \/>\nrequires planning and finance and effort to make it happen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Perhaps the answer is that the<br \/>\nhigh street has gone and its replacement could be born out of any public space.<br \/>\nDoes the high street need to be as linear as it once was with rows of streets<br \/>\nfilled with shops and restaurants, or could it be reimagined completely and be<br \/>\nplaced right on everyone\u2019s doorstep?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">That\u2019s a question that many<br \/>\npreviously declining areas have faced and answered, and they\u2019ve seen huge<br \/>\ntransformations not just within the local economies, but within the community<br \/>\ntoo with many also seeing dramatic reductions in crime rates. This means<br \/>\nthey can use these buildings to create a street that meets the needs of local<br \/>\npeople and more of the economic impact from changes they make stays in the<br \/>\ncommunity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">There are plenty of other<br \/>\nexamples of local communities taking a lead on high street recovery efforts,<br \/>\npop up art galleries and studios that showcase the work of local artists.<br \/>\nStorefront for Art in New York have done this successfully which demonstrates<br \/>\nthat even the worlds biggest and boldest cities haven\u2019t seen some decline, but<br \/>\nwhenever they have shown signs of decay there have been projects set up to turn<br \/>\nfortunes and communities around. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">There are also examples of<br \/>\ncommunity art workshops, with collaborations from local artists engaging<br \/>\ndirectly with those who might just buy into their work and we have seen great<br \/>\nexamples especially since that horrible period we all experienced during 2020<br \/>\nand 2021. Artist-led regeneration projects that empower local artists to lead<br \/>\nthe transformation of neglected areas through creative interventions, promoting<br \/>\nboth community participation and placemaking. Projects like &#8220;Art<br \/>\nBlock&#8221; in Baltimore and &#8220;Creative Time&#8221; in New York exemplify<br \/>\nthis approach.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Of course it\u2019s one thing<br \/>\nshouting loudly that we all want change, it\u2019s an entirely different story when<br \/>\nit comes to actually getting people to buy into the concept of actually doing<br \/>\nsomething about it. Sure we can look to governments for answers, but I think<br \/>\nrecent and not so recent experience of political interventions have<br \/>\ndemonstrated better than anything else that community adhesion is difficult,<br \/>\nmostly, politicians can\u2019t even agree with each other.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">There has to be a combination of<br \/>\nintent, willingness, and leadership before you stand any chance of uniting<br \/>\ncommunities, I\u2019m not convinced that with a few global exceptions, we would<br \/>\nnecessarily find those qualities in modern day politics. I think, if we want<br \/>\ncommunities and high streets to thrive then the very people who are shouting<br \/>\nneed to step up,<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>no matter how little<br \/>\nthey contribute, as long as they contribute something.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">There are plenty of examples<br \/>\nhere too. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l4 level1 lfo2; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\"><b><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\">Community Murals:<\/span><\/b><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\">\u00a0Involve<br \/>\n     residents in creating murals that reflect their stories, values, and<br \/>\n     aspirations, fostering a sense of shared identity and pride in the<br \/>\n     community. They\u2019ve also<br \/>\ncontinued the theme by using a collaboration of the same local artists to create<br \/>\nthe graphic design and branding elements and the best examples of this have<br \/>\nelevated the consumer experience and provided a very unique look and feel to<br \/>\nthe business. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The barriers to becoming a<br \/>\nprofessional artist and making a living wage from your creativity are many and<br \/>\nvaried. It\u2019s entirely possible to create art out of anything and someone<br \/>\nsomewhere will find value in that work, but if you want to express your<br \/>\ncreativity using equipment that you might not as yet be able to afford,<br \/>\nbecoming an artist is very much a chicken and egg paradox. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">This is where community led<br \/>\nmaker spaces have become critical to the success of local creative sectors.<br \/>\nTheir unique combination of resources, community, and innovation can be<br \/>\npowerful tools for infusing new life into stagnant local economies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">By providing affordable<br \/>\nworkspaces and access to equipment, Maker Spaces offer access to tools,<br \/>\nmachinery, increasingly 3D printer farms, and other technologies that aspiring<br \/>\ncreatives and entrepreneurs might not otherwise be able to afford. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Maker spaces are excellent at<br \/>\nencouraging a culture of innovation and collaboration. The community led<br \/>\nenvironment brings together creatives of all disciplines and skills and they do<br \/>\ntend to become hubs of shared expertise with plenty of mentors and peers<br \/>\nwilling to share their skills. One example I looked at last year also had<br \/>\nmembers of the local business community sharing their business development<br \/>\nknowledge with each other and those businesses would then collaborate with<br \/>\nlocal makers to create bespoke local arts and crafts which were then sold<br \/>\nexclusively in the community. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Maker Spaces also tend to be<br \/>\nhotbeds of prototyping and product development, if something can be designed to<br \/>\nfill a local need quickly, it\u2019s far quicker to cut out the logistical headaches<br \/>\nand supply chain issues by keeping everything confined to the local area<br \/>\nwherever it\u2019s possible and that links perfectly to the green agenda which can<br \/>\nin itself often lead to grants opportunities. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">The most successful Maker spaces<br \/>\ncan also develop tomorrows local workforce. Offering workshops and training<br \/>\nprograms,\u00a0Maker spaces can provide training in various technical<br \/>\nskills,\u00a0including digital<br \/>\nfabrication,\u00a0welding,\u00a0woodworking,\u00a0and<br \/>\nelectronics,\u00a0creating a more skilled workforce and attracting new<br \/>\nindustries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; If you are setting a maker space up, you also<br \/>\nneed someone to sell the vision to the local community and perhaps just as<br \/>\nimportantly, to local businesses and education providers. They are<br \/>\nall-encompassing, the best will have partnerships and a thousand moving parts<br \/>\nin the background and they will have landed the right messages with the<br \/>\ncommunity, they will have also done the outreach work and fostered champions to<br \/>\nspread the word.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Maker spaces foster a sense of<br \/>\ncommunity by offering a space for people to connect,\u00a0learn,\u00a0and<br \/>\ncreate together,\u00a0encouraging collaboration and social interaction. That<br \/>\nmeans that you will want to engage with local government and you will need to<br \/>\nonboard local education providers because there is a real opportunity here to<br \/>\npromote further education and STEAM learning, vitally important for tomorrows<br \/>\neconomy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Engaging young people in the<br \/>\nmaker experience can spark an interest in science, technology, engineering and<br \/>\narts, the exact roles that build the foundations of any economy. Young people<br \/>\nneed to be encouraged so that they can be better prepared for the needs of<br \/>\nfuture employment markets, particularly where people already in skilled roles<br \/>\nand heading rapidly towards retirement haven\u2019t been able to pass on knowledge<br \/>\nand skills because of skills shortfalls. I call it community succession<br \/>\nplanning, something that I think even globally, we haven\u2019t always been great at<br \/>\ndoing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">If you land this correctly, a<br \/>\nvibrant maker ecosystem can attract skilled individuals and<br \/>\nentrepreneurs,\u00a0contributing to a more dynamic and diverse local<br \/>\npopulation. There are some caveats, mainly around how effective the leadership<br \/>\nis, ideally that should be someone with a modicum of business nous and<br \/>\nexperience in the creative sector. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; line-height: 200%; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #1f1f1f; line-height: 200%;\">The rest is purely down to<br \/>\nensuring that folks are committed to making the project work, and local<br \/>\nbusiness stepping up and engaging. All of this might sound like an impossible<br \/>\nask in some communities but where Maker Spaces have worked well it has usually<br \/>\nbeen in areas that have been forgotten about for years. <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\"><b><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\">Further Resources:<\/span><\/b><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: large;\">Fixing the high street is<br \/>\ncomplex and it needs a coalition of the willing to make the changes needed and<br \/>\ndrive local projects forward. Can we rely on cash-strapped governments and<br \/>\nlocal authorities to resolve any of this, I\u2019m not sure we can despite how confident<br \/>\nI think we can all be that a thriving community heartbeat contributes<br \/>\npositively to local and national economies.
