{"id":47545,"date":"2025-01-26T01:49:19","date_gmt":"2025-01-26T01:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/agriculture\/usda-nominee-acknowledges-devastating-impact-of-trade-war\/"},"modified":"2025-01-26T01:49:19","modified_gmt":"2025-01-26T01:49:19","slug":"usda-nominee-acknowledges-devastating-impact-of-trade-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=47545","title":{"rendered":"USDA nominee acknowledges \u201cdevastating\u201d impact of trade war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) will offer financial aid to US farmers and ranchers negatively impacted by a \u201cdevastating\u201d trade war during the second Trump administration, says Trump\u2019s nominee to run the department.<\/p>\n<p>During her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/program\/senate-committee\/agriculture-sec-nominee-brooke-rollins-testifies-at-confirmation-hearing\/654582\">confirmation hearing<\/a> before the Senate Agriculture Committee Thursday, Brooke Rollins was repeatedly asked about the impact of a fresh round of tariffs, which President Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/agfundernews.com\/whats-next-on-tariffs-as-trump-takes-office-and-what-will-the-external-revenue-service-do\">signaled<\/a> could be imposed on Canada and Mexico as soon as February 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegarding the president\u2019s tariff agenda, I think it probably comes as no surprise to anyone sitting in this room that he believes it is a very important tool in his tool kit to continue to bring America back to the forefront of the world and to ensure that we have a thriving economy,\u201d said Rollins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut just as he did and we did in the first administration, he also understands the potential devastating impact to our farmers and our ranchers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Retaliatory tariffs<\/h4>\n<p>While the US is an agricultural powerhouse, it also exports large amounts of corn, soybeans, almonds, beef, poultry and wheat. During Trump\u2019s first term, USDA set up a fund to compensate US soybean farmers and others who were <a href=\"https:\/\/gjia.georgetown.edu\/2022\/10\/26\/policies-and-politics-effects-on-us-china-soybean-trade\/\">negatively impacted<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piie.com\/blogs\/trade-and-investment-policy-watch\/first-tariffs-then-subsidies-soybeans-illustrate-trumps\">retaliatory tariffs<\/a> instituted by China in response to tariffs imposed by Trump on $360 billion worth of Chinese goods.<\/p>\n<p>Should she be confirmed, said Rollins, USDA would be prepared to provide similar financial aid for farmers impacted by a new <a href=\"https:\/\/agfundernews.com\/trumps-tariffs-wont-help-us-agrifood-industry-says-ex-congressman-charlie-dent-there-are-no-winners\">trade war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI have spoken with Secretary [Sonny] Perdue [who ran USDA in Trump\u2019s first term] a few times on how that was managed so we are prepared to execute something similar if approved\u2026 but [we are] also working with the White House to ensure that we can close those holes for our farmers and ranchers moving forward under any sort of tariff execution in the next coming days, in the next few years. That will be a top priority of mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen Michael Bennet (D-CO) noted: \u201cWhat we have heard from our farmers and ranchers over and over again is they want to be able to do the work, they want to be able to export. They don\u2019t want to solve this problem by getting aid to make up for what they should have been able to send to Asia and other places. The only growth my farmers and ranchers can see in the foreseeable future\u2026 is by growing our exports of agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen Raphael Warnock, D-GA, added: \u201cFarmers in Georgia\u2026 are concerned about potential retaliatory actions following President Trump\u2019s promises to levy heavy tariffs\u2026 They are already dealing with slim margins due to higher input costs, and the last thing they need is to be caught up in the middle of a trade war that could drive up food prices for all of us.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Asked by Sen Adam Schiff (D-CA) if she was committed to distribute \u201ceconomic assistance, including trade relief, to states without regard to their political leanings,\u201d she said: \u201cI am committed to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Mass deportations<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Rollins was later quizzed by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) on the impact of mass deportations of undocumented workers on the food and agriculture industry: \u00a0\u201cYour organization [the nonprofit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americafirstpolicy.com\/\">America First Policy Institute<\/a>, which Rollins leads] has said pretty strong things. [It] has called for deportation at a scale that actually matters, massive deportation efforts\u2026Can we expect this administration to be raiding farms and going after the immigrant farm workers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rollins responded: \u201cThe President\u2019s vision of a secure border and a mass deportation at a scale that matters is something I support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, she pledged to work with the Secretary of Labor to reform the H-2A visa program [which covers temporary agricultural laborers coming to the US on a seasonal basis] and \u201cfollow and listen to our farmers and ranchers as this is moving.\u201d She added: \u201cWe will do everything we can to make sure that none of these farms or dairy producers are put out of business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schiff went on: \u201cIf we deport a large percentage of our farm workforce, farm labor is going to be scarce. Isn\u2019t that inevitably going to push up food prices? And if so, isn\u2019t that in sharp contrast with what the President said he wanted to do to bring down egg prices and food prices and everything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rollins responded: \u201cFirst of all we are speaking in hypotheticals, but these are hypotheticals we do need to be thinking through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked by Sen.
