I had an exceedingly rare experience the other day, when I awarded
\na beer on Untappd<\/b>, with a score of 5.0.<\/b> Those of you that are familiar with this
\nbeer ticking app will know that a 5.0<\/b> is the highest score possible, and as with
\nCAMRA\u2019s beer scoring <\/b>option (for members only), on its What Pub<\/b> app, five is a
\nscore that is rarely given. The lucky beer was one that I\u2019d been keeping in my
\nstash for some time, and was a bottle-conditioned barley wine, called A Over T,<\/b>
\nbrewed by Hog\u2019s Back Brewery<\/b> at their plant in Tongham, Surrey.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m not quite sure
\nhow or where I acquired this bottle, but it was a 2021 vintage<\/b>. Described as a multi
\naward winning barley wine, the Best Before Date<\/b>, on the bottle neck wasn\u2019t
\nreally legible, but 3-4 years on from its brew-date, the beer was certainly
\nvery drinkable. Actually, that is an understatement, as that 330 ml<\/b>
\nbottle of A Over T<\/b> was more than just drinkable, it was absolutely amazing and
\ndefinitely worthy of an Untappd<\/b> score of 5.0<\/b>!<\/p>\n

This beer represents only the third time I’ve ever given a
\nscore of five on Untappd<\/b>, a fact I know to be true, as the app has feature
\nwhere you can look back and search though all the scores you\u2019ve given over the
\nyears (it\u2019s easy with a score of 5.0, but something of a nightmare when there are
\numpteen 4.0\u2019s, or 3.5\u2019s). So before moving on to describe A Over T<\/b> in more
\ndetail, what were those other two top-scoring beers?<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

Aecht
\nSchlenkerla Eiche Dopplebock<\/span><\/b>,
\nbrewed in Bamberg, Franconia,<\/b> by the legendary <\/span>Schlenkerla Brewery<\/b>,
\nis one of them, and it was on sale at Tonbridge Fuggle\u2019s<\/b>, over the Christmas<\/b>
\nand New Year<\/b> period. I enjoyed a glass of this rich, and warming 8.0% abv,<\/b>
\noak-smoked beer, on New Year\u2019s Eve<\/b>, and the reason for giving it top marks was
\nits tremendous depth of flavour. A beer to savour, and one which brought back
\npleasant memories of drinking in Bamberg\u2019s<\/b> legendary Schlenkerla Tavern.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I stumbled cross the third top scoring beer in July 2019
\n<\/b>when, at the end of a three-day walk along a stretch of the North
\nDowns Way<\/span><\/b>, I stopped off in Canterbury,<\/b> for a well-earned pint. The pub
\nI chose was the Old Buttermarket,<\/b> an historic pub, right in the centre
\nof the city, which overlooks a small pedestrianised square, right opposite the
\ncathedral gate. The tables and chairs set outside always look inviting,
\nespecially in summer, and after a tiring 10 mile walk into the city that pint
\nof Pilsner Urquell<\/b> at the Old Buttermarket<\/b>, was one of the finest
\npints of beer it has been my privilege to drink \u2013 and I don\u2019t say that lightly!<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Before taking my glass outside, I took another mouthful of
\nthe beer, just to make sure I wasn\u2019t dreaming. I wasn\u2019t, the beer was
\nabsolutely brilliant, and I couldn\u2019t believe my good fortune. I sat down at one
\nof the tables facing the cathedral gate<\/b>, feeling totally relaxed and at
\none with the world. This wasn\u2019t just down to the smugness of having completed
\nmy walk, but much more to the excellence of the beer. <\/p>\n

The strange thing is that I\u2019ve put away many glasses of
\nPilsner Urquell<\/b>, including on two separate visits to the brewery in Plze\u0148<\/b>
\nitself. During a visit to what was then Czechoslovakia,<\/b> back in 1984<\/b> when the
\ncountry was still firmly behind the Iron Curtain<\/b>, the Pilsner Urquell <\/b>brewery
\nwas still pretty much low-tech. With fermentation in wooden vats, and maturation
\nin large pitch-lined, oak casks, the beer should have tasted amazing, and quite
\npossibly it did. Forty years on, and it\u2019s impossible to remember, especially
\nfollowing a visit to a part of the world where everything was noticeably
\ndifferent. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Back to Hog\u2019s Back<\/b> plus that amazing bottle of A Over T<\/b><\/a>, and this is what the brewery have to say about it.
\n\u201cBrewed in small batches and matured in the brewery cellar, like a fine wine. A
\nOver T is made from high quality English malted barley Kent Golding hops are
\nadded for bitterness, plus aroma whilst Bramling Cross hops further enhance the
\ncharacter, resulting in deep rich and complex flavours of sultanas orange peel
\nand plums.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cEnjoy it like you would fortified wine in a wine glass or
\nBrandy balloon, which will concentrate its wonderful aroma. It goes
\nparticularly well with full flavoured mature cheeses, rich cakes and puddings,
\nand can also be savoured on its own at the end of an evening.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

If you ever come across a bottle, then buy it, or
\nalternatively call in at the well-stocked shop, next to the brewery. Open seven
\ndays a week, it\u2019s an obvious, beer lover\u2019s paradise, but if you live outside a 30-mile
\nradius of the brewery, then delivery by a local courier is another option. Whilst
\non the subject of Hog\u2019s Back Brewery<\/a><\/u>,<\/b> back in the dim and distant past history
\nof West Kent CAMRA,<\/b> I organised a coach trip to the brewery, where our group
\nwas given a guided tour of the plant. There was also plenty of samples to try,
\nand in a novel approach the samples were different, depending on which part of
\nthe brewery we were in.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

To explain, at the start of the tour we were each given a
\nclean, half-pint, badged Hog\u2019s Back<\/b> glass. The idea was, there were pre-poured
\njugs of beer at various key points of the brewery, and the beer dished out
\nbecame progressively stronger as we made our way around the plant. So, to start
\noff, we were given TEA<\/b> (Traditional English Ale)<\/b>, then Hop Garden Gold, Rip Snorter<\/b> and then OTT<\/b> (Old Tongham Tasty). <\/b>I don\u2019t
\nthink A Over T <\/b>featured on the lineup, but it was a good idea to start off on
\nthe weaker stuff, before ending up with one of the stronger brews. <\/p>\n

Hog\u2019s Back<\/b> cask and bottled beers were regular stock items
\nat the \u201cCask & Glass\u201d<\/i><\/b> off-licence, in Tonbridge<\/b>, when it was under our
\nownership. Sadly, the business is no more, and whilst the building still stands,
\nit now houses an osteopath. As for A Over T<\/b>, it isn’t the most subtle of abbreviations, but it stands for “Aromas Over Tongham.”<\/b> <\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
