The short answer involves control. As podcaster and author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guyraz.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Guy Raz<\/strong><\/a> explains on page 53 of How I Built This:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cHaving spoken to hundreds of brilliant entrepreneurs, I know that bootstrapping is more than simply using alternative sources of personal financing as a last resort. It\u2019s also about keeping control of your business as long as you can. It\u2019s about using other nonmonetary assets to solve problems that you would otherwise hire someone else to solve or throw money at \u2014 assets like your time, your effort, your network, and your own talent and ingenuity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Skim forward to page 61, and Raz quotes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svangel.com\/team\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ron Conway<\/strong><\/a>, the \u201cGodfather of Silicon Valley\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cBootstrapping as long as you can is the best thing for the company because you own the entire company\u2026 Use your credit cards, do anything you can so that by the time you go to angels you have built a working prototype and have some users. You\u2019ll likely be valued higher and will suffer less dilution.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When to Shift From Bootstrapping to Outside Funding From Angel Investors<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Generally speaking, Channel Angels agrees with that bootstrapping guidance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelangels.com\/faq\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Check out our FAQ<\/strong><\/a>, and you\u2019ll noice that Channel Angels typically invests in technology startups or tech-savvy businesses that have:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Partner-first sales models that leverage ISV, MSP, VAR and\/or IT consulting engagements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">SaaS \/ recurring revenue-based financial models.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">At least six months of revenue and\/or six months of customer growth.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: We also consider pre-revenue investments based on additional factors such as market opportunity, intellectual property, leadership and more.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In other words, your company and product should generally be more than \u201cvaporware\u201d when you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelangels.com\/funding\"><strong>contact us for potential funding<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When Bootstrapping Works \u2014 And Doesn\u2019t Work<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In my case, Amy Katz and I never had to raise third-party funding to build the two IT media businesses that we ultimately sold to Penton Media (now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.informa.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Informa<\/strong><\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberriskalliance.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>CyberRisk Alliance<\/strong><\/a>, respectively. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But keep in mind: Amy and I had complementary skills and similar financial values. Amy is a business builder who understands sales, finance, marketing and more. I\u2019m a media platform builder who understands content, technology, and (some of) the Internet\u2019s plumbing. At the same time, our respective families generally lived below our financial means \u2014 which allowed us to tap into personal savings for our business launches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Our bootstrapping strategy worked well in the IT media market, where startup costs can be low \u2014 if you know the underlying technologies you\u2019ll need to use and scale, and the target audiences\/sponsors you need to engage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The situation is far different in the software market and enterprise-class technology startups \u2014 where<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/sponsor\/brex\/how-much-are-startups-spending-for-their-top-needs\/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAExDRNH88BOnZxPaieXpSdZwxfSOW1eWPk03GWqdahlTFYW05wokSgVLNSwypQGjPxsUKGMAolKY-pFTordkbKkBRWQINFKty24tqmpxLVBpof70nkp3UG2ZQz54F1-DkXTX3tXWZUGb3M0fPwZ5cSwmWhLiihaaOYIPOy0mPNXX\" target=\"_blank\"> <strong>monthly burn rates can easily top $250,000 per month<\/strong><\/a>.
