Earlier this month, a 32-year-old Greek man brought something remarkable to his local police station: a statue of a woman draped in flowing cloth, missing its arms and head. He\u2019d found it encased in a black plastic bag next to garbage cans on the street.<\/p>\n

Authorities called in experts to examine the piece. According to a statement<\/a> from the Greek police, they determined that the statue dates back to Greece\u2019s\u00a0Hellenistic<\/a> period\u2014which lasted from the death of\u00a0Alexander the Great<\/a> in 323 B.C.E. until around 31 B.C.E.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not the first time\u201d a civilian has handed over a statue to police, as Vasilis Tempelis, a culture ministry spokesperson, tells the\u00a0New York Times<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Christine Hauser. Plans to investigate the circumstances and analyze the statue are already in motion.<\/p>\n

Local police have turned over the statue to investigators from Greece\u2019s Cultural Heritage Protection Office. The piece will be sent to a forensic laboratory for analysis before making its way to the local antiquities authority, as the\u00a0Associated Press<\/a>\u2019 Costas Kantouris reports. Police have questioned one man about the discarded statue and released him without charge.<\/p>\n

The artifact was found in Neoi Epivates, a suburb of Thessaloniki, Greece\u2019s second-largest city, per the AP. It\u2019s just over 31 inches tall\u2014about the length of a\u00a0baseball bat<\/a>. As\u00a0Bert Smith<\/a>, a classical archaeologist at Oxford University, tells the Times<\/em>, the marble statue was probably made for religious purposes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe small size is typical for such marble\u00a0votives<\/a> set up to divinities in sanctuaries or temples,\u201d he says. In ancient Greece, \u201cpeople prayed to divinities and made dedications to them in thanks for their favor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greece\u2019s three-century-long Hellenistic era was marked by cultural expansion and exchange. Alexander the Great died without a successor, leaving the vast empire he\u2019d conquered to be divided into three large kingdoms<\/a>, which secured Greek influence throughout the Middle East and into South Asia. Greece became more cosmopolitan, and its philosophy and art scenes flourished.<\/p>\n

Unlike the \u201cdetached idealism\u201d found in the sculptures of Greece\u2019s\u00a0Classical<\/a> period\u2014during the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.E.\u2014Hellenistic sculptures \u201creflected a new awareness of personality and introspection by showing realism and human emotion,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a> art historian Summer Trentin<\/a> and classicist\u00a0Debby Sneed<\/a> in 2018. Hellenistic sculptors paid special attention to draped fabric, like the dress worn in the famous\u00a0Winged Victory of Samothrace<\/em><\/a>, and the female body, as seen in\u00a0Aphrodite of Knidos<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n
