I\u2019ve known him for eight years, yet he just recently told me about his interpretation of Philip Glass\u2019 popular film soundtrack for the experimental film of 1982, <em>Koyaanisqatsi<\/em>. \u00a0 Turns out Gilles\u2019<em> Koyaasnowcatsi <\/em> been sitting in his archives for more than a decade. And despite him destroying the master recordings, or so he says, the quality of this newly released ten-piece reinterpretation\/reimagining is quite clear. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularculturebeat.com\/2024\/02\/06\/a-strange-experience-gilles-snowcat-on-philip-glass-sly-koyaasnowcatsi-qa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">(For more info, please read my interview with Gilles at Popular Culture Beat).<\/a><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/0ER3q6GCdQIG33C4VpDTV5?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>Track By Track<\/strong><br \/>The opening track, \u201cKoyaanisqatsi\u201d, is dark and moody, and uniquely Snowcat, putting an art rock ballad sound to Glass\u2019 somber piece. Then comes \u201cOrganic,\u201d a beautifully minimalistic piece, just a pristine string sound, some deep bass and a lonely arpeggio. Gilles\u2019 voice is here and there, adding a human touch that accentuates the warmth of the melodies, played by hand, even in the case of some of Glass\u2019 characteristic arpeggios. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCloudscape\u201d promises something uplifting, with a bouncy electronic piano phrase, but it never delivers, instead developing into a minor key and a lyrical representation of thematic darkness. \u201cResource\u201d is sublimely mechanical, ethereal and beautiful, before getting darkly suggestive, then opening up into a majestic theme. \u201dVessels\u201d is somewhat lyrical and translucent,  based mainly on a flanged analog string sound then developing into something reminiscent of Glass\u2019 1981 album <em>Glassworks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPruit Igoe\u201d(sic) has a cathedral like sound, building into arpeggiated synth pop, as a musical commentary on the famed St. Louis housing project designed by Japanese-American architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectural-review.com\/essays\/reputations\/minoru-yamasaki-1912-1986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Minoru Yamasaki<\/a>. \u201cSlo Mo People\u201d provides further commentary on the interaction between we and our environments, in a strikingly beautiful way. Not knowing much about the film, nor about the Philip Glass soundtrack, I hear optimism and a sense of awe within Snowcat\u2019s version.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/3BiwVZw00CYPPeCwxmjwjz?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Grid\u201d is a somber, reflective piece that evolves into something about the mysteries and potential of technology. Featuring flanged strings in the high cello range, the brief \u201cMicrochip\u201d is and mysterious as the electronic component that inspired the song. As the final piece, \u201cProphecies\u201d looks backwards into reflection, and hopefully towards potential. In this last piece, the earthy baritone of Gilles Snowcat\u2019s voice finds an ideal vehicle. As the word \u00a0<em>Koyaanisqatsi <\/em>means <em>Life Out Of Balance<\/em> in the Hopi language, Snowcat\u2019s vocalizations here embody all the hope and occasional terror that accompanies the human voyage through the changes of history. <em>Koyaasnowcatsi<\/em> is a deeply spiritual album, one I give Synthbeat\u2019s highest recommendation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Snowcat\u2019s <strong>Koyaasnowcatsi<\/strong> features 10 of the 13 tracks from the complete 2009 release (there was also a 1998 version following the original 1983 release). It\u2019s a mature set of interpretations from a singer\/songwriter who often busts out masterful tunes, including his share of instrumentals. <strong>Koyaasnowcatsi <\/strong>has the advantage over the original of including more human playing \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthbeat.com\/2020\/09\/12\/unboxing-the-party-the-world-needs-with-gilles-snowcat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Snowcat\u2019s deft keyboard skills<\/a> \u2013 rather than the mechanical\u00a0 repetition of Glass\u2019 original. Being a bootleg, there\u2019s some mystery about the recording medium and the version we have now.
