Examples include <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/announcement\/microsoft-is-born\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Microsoft<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/671584\/history-of-apple-the-story-of-steve-jobs-and-the-company-he-founded.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Apple<\/strong><\/a> (launched in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1973%E2%80%931975_recession\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1975<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1976\/03\/29\/archives\/issues-76-the-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1976<\/strong><\/a>, respectively), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/ibm\/history\/ibm100\/us\/en\/icons\/founded\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>IBM<\/strong><\/a> (debuted in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Panic_of_1910%E2%80%931911\"><strong>1911<\/strong><\/a>). <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Fast forward to present day, and thousands of talented entrepreneurs are building new, disruptive technology businesses \u2014 despite lingering fears that <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/recession-fears-growing-downturn\/story?id=95600539\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>we could all face a recession in 2023<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">My point: You can build a technology business that overcomes economic headwinds. My former business partner (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amy-katz-466b064\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Amy Katz<\/strong><\/a>) and I did exactly that with a business launch in 2008 \u2014 during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/economics\/09\/financial-crisis-review.asp\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>financial crisis on Wall Street<\/strong><\/a>. We largely ignored the crisis, bootstrapped our operations, closely managed our clash flow, built deep relationships with sponsors and readers, and had a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/penton-acquires-nine-lives-media-128666653.html\" target=\"_blank\"> <strong>successful exit in 2011<\/strong><\/a> (far earlier than we expected).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Fast forward to present day, and I remain upbeat about entrepreneurial activity. Still, your startup journey <em>may<\/em> involve eating a bit of near-term humble pie. The reason: If you raised money during the sky-high valuation years of 2020 or 2021, you <em>may<\/em> have to settle for a lower valuation for funding in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The evidence: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/25\/techs-reality-check-how-the-industry-lost-7point4-trillion-in-one-year.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>technology industry lost $7.4 trillion in market valuation<\/strong><\/a> from November 2021 to November 2022, according to CNBC. Amid rising interest rates and falling stocks on Wall Street, many investors shifted their focus from rapid revenue growth to a proven path to profitability. <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Potential Evidence of Down Round Funding Deals<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But what does all that mean for technology entrepreneurs and angel investors? Consider these findings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.angellist.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>AngelList Venture<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svb.com\"><strong>Silicon Valley Bank<\/strong><\/a>. For Q3 of 2022:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Pre-seed valuations declined by 19.4% to $10.2 million;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Seed-stage valuations declined by 15.9% to $28 million;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Series A valuations declined by 13.1% to $88.6 million; and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Series B valuations declined by 28% to $301 million.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Admittedly, those averages can be skewed by outlier deals, AngelList Venture and Silicon Valley Bank note. And we\u2019ve certainly seen startups increase their valuations in recent months \u2014 particularly if they became cashflow positive coupled, strong ARR (annual recurring revenue) growth or a well-managed monthly burn rate.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Early Stage Funding: Channel Angels Remains Responsibly Active<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If you\u2019re seeking funding right now, consider these additional variables:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/games\/vc-investments-and-exits-plummeted-in-2022-nvca\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Venture capital investments and exits plummeted in 2022<\/strong><\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchbook.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Pitchbook<\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nvca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong>National Venture Capital Association<\/strong><\/span> <\/a>(NVCA).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">North American startup funding fell 63% in Q4 of 2022 compared to Q4 of 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/north-american-startup-funding-q4-2022\/?utm_campaign=20230106&amp;utm_content=intro&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=cb_daily&amp;utm_term=content\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>according to Crunchbase<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">in stark contrast, Channel Angels continued to invest steadily \u2014 and responsibly \u2014 throughout 2022. In fact, it was our most active year to date.
