The 2024 film Gladiator II<\/em><\/strong> lacks the power of the first film. I came late to this Ridley Scott party, however. Maximus shouts in the original film, \u201cAre you not entertained!\u201d Yes, actually, I am. <\/p>\n Lucius Verus Aurelius enters into the world of Gladiators. He is bought by Macrinus. Lucius\u2019 new owner plans to use his most recent acquisition to overthrow the current rulers of Rome. <\/p>\n Like his father, Lucius becomes the favorite of Rome\u2019s citizens. They call him Hanno and cheer when he wins. He is aware of Macrinus\u2019 machinations and plans his own, to counteract his owner\u2019s devious and callous attempt to overthrow the current rulers. <\/p>\n Paul Mescal<\/a> is Lucius.<\/p>\n Denzel Washington<\/a> is Macrinus.<\/p>\n Pedro Pascal<\/a> is General Acacius.<\/p>\n Connie <\/a>Nielsen<\/a> is Lucilla.<\/p>\n Joseph Quinn<\/a> is Emperor Geta.<\/p>\n Fred Hechinger<\/a> is Emperor Caracalla.<\/p>\n Lior Raz<\/a> is Viggo.<\/p>\n Derek Jacobi<\/a> is Gracchus. <\/p>\n Peter Mensah<\/a> is Jugurtha.<\/p>\n Matt Lucas<\/a> is The Master of Ceremonies.<\/p>\n Tim McInnerny<\/a> is Senator Thraex.<\/p>\n Ridley Scott<\/a> directs Gladiator II<\/em><\/strong> with his usual flair. Before going any further, however, I must say the film looks<\/em> glorious. Each frame has its own beauty and the colours practically leap off the screen. Scott\u2019s vision here is one of violent opulence and vivid corruption. <\/p>\n These things alone make this one Oscar worthy. <\/p>\n David Scarpa<\/a>, along with Peter Craig<\/a> share writing credits here, with Scarpa claiming sole credit for the screenplay. David Franzoni<\/a> gets the obligatory \u201cbased on characters created by,\u201d credit. <\/p>\n Gladiator II<\/em><\/strong> with its convoluted storyline, still manages to entertain. The film\u2019s worst kept secret, that Lucius is the son of Lucilla and Maximus, takes nothing away from the spectacle. <\/p>\n John <\/a>Mathieson<\/a>, as cinematographer, makes every scene crack and pop. Watching this sequel to the Russell Crowe original looks almost like old Hollywood classics. Spartacus<\/em><\/strong> and Cleopatra<\/strong><\/em> spring immediately to mind. Sadly, we have no Richard Burton<\/a> on hand to crank things up. It also makes one think of the more recent epic Troy<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n Everyone here came to Gladiator II<\/em><\/strong> with their \u201cA\u201d game. The film really being all about Lucius. We are, however, diverted to General Acacius and Macrinus. Washington and Pascal almost steal the film. Their performances are beyond superb and, sadly for Pascal, Washington nudges ahead in the \u201cmagic\u201d department. His gladiator owning anarchist; who wants to rule the new Rome, is captivating. <\/p>\n Quinn and Hechinger are brilliantly unhinged as the mentally unstable twins who rule Rome. Nielsen returns as Lucilla. The role is well crafted and she shines in this revisit to the Roman world of swords and sandals.<\/p>\n Jacobi is practically wasted as Gracchus, who had a bit more to do in Gladiator<\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>\nthe story<\/h4>\n
